Active listening is a communication technique that involves carefully listening to the speaker, rephrasing what you hear to be sure you got it right and then listening again for agreement or explanation. Sometimes people who aren’t trained in active listening techniques think that it merely means repeating what the other person said. However, it’s wrong.
When you learn what is active listening, you can start to build a strong relationship with others. However, you don’t need to use active listening all the time. In fact, that could be very tiring! It’s best used when you can see from your friend’s or family member’s body language or voice that there’s something going on involving strong feelings or stress.
When you are doing active listening, it helps to face the other person with no barriers in between you. Bend forward a bit and look at the other person’s eyes. Clear your mind so you can understand what the other person is saying. Make sure the person doesn’t say too much before you speak, or it can be hard to remember everything.
Next, rephrase what you heard, with tentative language since you don’t want to jump to a conclusion. You can use phrases like, “It sounds like” or “I’m thinking if your meaning is” to introduce your comments.
Finally, listen carefully to what the other person says next. She may say “No, that’s not it” and elucidate what she means. In that case, you should continue active listening, and again rephrase the meaning. Repeat that process until you get agreement that you finally heard correctly.
Often when expressing what the person said using different words, you can attempt to identify the feelings behind the conversation. When both parties understand each other, you’re more likely to work together and have effective communication going forward.
5. What should you do in active listening?
A. Give the other suggestions. B. Say more than the speaker.
C. Concentrate your attention. D. Repeat what the other says.
6. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “elucidate” in Paragraph 5?
A. Change. B. Analyze. C. Forget. D. Explain.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. It is not easy to carry out active listening. B. Active listening is hardly used in daily life.
C. We have a natural ability to listen actively. D. We can’t have a talk without active listening.
【答案】5. C 6. D 7. A
【解析】

【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“She may say “No, that’s not it” and”以及后文“what she means. In that case, you should continue active listening, and again rephrase the meaning. Repeat that process until you get agreement that you finally heard correctly”可知,她可能会说“不,不是那样的”,并解释她真正的意思。在这种情况下,你应该继续积极地倾听,并重新措辞。重复这个过程,直到你最终听到正确的解释,故画线词意思是“解释”。A. Change.改变;B. Analyze.分析;C. Forget.忘记;D. Explain.解释。故选D。

Ask anyone who lives in an apartment in a crowded city and they’ll likely tell you space is their biggest problem. Those living in even smaller rooms know the headache well. Boston-based start-up Ori is out to solve it with a system that uses robotics and apartment furniture to change small spaces in seconds.
The company’s new system is also called Ori, which is named for the Japanese word “origami”, the art of folding paper. The new system makes your furniture change small space from living rooms into bedrooms and even workspaces with the push of a button.
Ori comes from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab, which helps companies create a better future for people. Ori is working with developers Boston Properties, Skanska and Samuels Associates to install (安装) the furniture in high-end apartments in Boston. It is working with designer Yves Béhar on the furniture designs.
The Boston models are being rented on Airbnb, an online company offering people rentals, so Ori can collect information about what users think of the system and improve it in the future. “The system will be put on the market in the near future,” said founder and CEO Hasier Larrea.
All of Ori’s product is made in the United States, and the furniture is actually more expensive to make than the robotics. Assembly (组装) is simple — the units can be put together in just a day. The biggest challenge for this team is making the system feel and look personal.
“We have created these amazing robots with amazing abilities,” Larrea said. “But when you bring a system into a home, it can’t look like a robot.”
8. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The pain in the head. B. Crowdedness in cities.
C. The poor housing condition. D. Space shortage in the house.
9. How does Ori help its users?
A. By keeping their apartments clean.
B. By making their rooms functional.
C. By offering them a big place to work.
D. By increasing storage space at home.
10. What do we know about the new system Ori?
A. It is being tested now.
B. It can be ordered on Airbnb.
C. It has been popular in Boston.
D. It was designed by Yves Béhar.
11. What will the company focus on in the future?
A. Lowering the cost as much as possible.
B. Simplifying the units of its product.
C. Making Ori more human-friendly.
D. Developing more advanced robots.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C
【解析】

Those living in even smaller rooms know the headache well.”(随便问一个在拥挤的城市里住公寓的人,他们很可能会告诉你,空间是他们最大的问题。那些住在更小房间里的人更了解这件令人头痛的事。)可知,此处是指解决空间缺乏这件令人头痛的事。所以it是指空间缺乏。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第二句“The new system makes your furniture change small space from living rooms into bedrooms and even workspaces with the push of a button”(新系统让你的家具只需按下一个按钮,就能把客厅变成卧室,甚至工作区)可知,Ori帮助它的使用者让他们的房间很实用。故选B。

Studies have shown a direct link between goals and improved performance in both sports and business. Earl Nightingale put it this way, “People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. It’s as simple as that.”
Dr. Maxwell Maltz, author of the classic Psycho-Cybernetics, said that human beings have a built-in goal seeking “success mechanism (机制)” that is part of the subconscious (潜意识的) mind. This success mechanism is constantly searching for ways to help us reach our targets and find answers to our problems. According to Maltz, we feel better when our success mechanism keeps going after clear targets. All we have to do to use this mechanism is give it a target.
One important reason goal setters achieve such outstanding results is that they have learned how to focus and concentrate their time, energy and resources (资源) on a single goal, even though it is just for a few hours at a time. One major time management challenge we are facing today is that there are more things available for us to do than anyone could possibly attempt, let alone accomplish, in an entire lifetime. If we are not careful, it is very easy to waste our time on unimportant things.
Most significant accomplishments are accompanied with difficulties, struggles and failures. Thomas Edison failed over one thousand times before he finally discovered a way to make the light bulb work. It is very rare for something important to be accomplished successfully on the very first try. If you want to achieve anything significant, it is likely that you will struggle and fail many times before you finally reach your target. One of the main reasons why people give up so easily in the face of failure is that they lose sight of their “why”. Goals can help you remember your “big why” when you need to pick yourself up and keep going in the face of difficult situations.
12. What can we learn from Earl Nightingale’s and Dr. Maxwell Maltz’s words?
A. It’s important to succeed in life.
B. It’s extremely easy to achieve aims.
C. It’s greatly significant to set goals.
D. It’s common to make accomplishments.
13. What’s important in achieving success according to Paragraph 3?
A. Setting a realistic target.
B. Concentrating on your aim.
C. Managing your time properly.
D. Making the most of your resources.
14. What can we conclude from the last paragraph?
A. Goals can prevent us giving up easily.
B. Goals mean achieving more than others.
C. Goals get rid of doubts about what we do.
D. Goals lead to more difficulties or failures.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to set goals? B. How can we succeed?
C. Why should we set goals? D. Why should we keep going?
