Toni Morrison was an American writer who received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her novels, Beloved, Song of Solomon, and others explored the way African-Americans search for freedom and identity in a country obsessed (受困扰的) with skin colour. Morrison was nearly 40 when she published her first novel The Bluest Eye in 1970. The Nobel Prize committee described her writing as “language itself, a language she wants to liberate(解放) from race”. Her novels discussed America’s past, focusing on black history and the effects of slavery and racism. She called her characters “the unfree at the heart of the democratic (民主制度的) experiment”.
In 1988, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her novel Beloved, the story of a mother who kills her baby daughter rather than permit her to return to slavery. It became a best-seller and was later made into a film. Many Americans admired her as the country’s greatest writer, including former President Barack Obama.
She was born in 1931. She attended Howard University, an all-black university in Washington, DC. At Howard, she read African, British and American literature, including writers William Faulkner and Virginia Woolf. After a short marriage, she became a single mother of two sons and worked as a book editor in New York.
Several publishers rejected her first book The Bluest Eye, but it impressed The New York Times’ book critic John Leonard, who believed Morrison was an important new voice. He said her writing was “so full of pain and wonder that the novel becomes poetry”.
Morrison enjoyed her literary fame and was proud of her Nobel Prize.

Today’s world is not an easy adjustment for young adults. A key skill set for success is persistence (毅力), a characteristic that researchers say is heavily influenced by fathers. Researchers from Brigham Young University discovered that fathers are in a unique position to help their adolescent children learn persistence.
BYU professors Laura Padilla-Walker and Randal Day arrived at these findings after following 325 American families over several years. And over time, the persistence gained through fathers led to higher achievement in school.
“There are relatively few studies that stress the unique role of fathers,” Padilla-Walker said. “This research also helps to prove that characteristics such as persistence — which can be taught — are key to a child’s life success.”
Researchers determined that dads need to practice an “authoritative” parenting style. Authoritative parenting is not authoritarian: rigid (死板的), demanding or controlling. Rather, an authoritative parenting style includes some of the following characteristics: children feel warmth and love from their father; responsibility and the reasons behind rules are stressed; children are given an appropriate level of autonomy (自主权).
In the study, about 52 percent of the dads exhibited above-average levels of authoritative parenting. A key finding is that over time, children raised by an authoritative father were significantly more likely to develop persistence, which leads to better outcomes in school.
This particular study examined 11 to 14-year-olds living in two-parent homes. Yet the researchers suggest that single parents still may play a role in teaching the benefits of persistence, which is an avenue of future research.
28. What is special about the BYU professors’ study?
A. It centered on fathers’ role in parenting.
B. It was based on a number of large families.
C. It analyzed different kinds of parenting styles.
D. It aimed to improve kids’ achievement in school.
29. What would an authoritative father do when raising his children?
A. Ignore their demands. B. Make decisions for them.
C. Control their behaviors. D. Explain the rules to them.
30. Which group can be a focus of future studies according to the researchers?
A. Single parents. B. Children aged from 11 to 14.
C. Authoritarian fathers. D. Mothers in two-parent homes.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Three Characteristics of Authoritative Fathers
B. Key Skills for Young Adults to Succeed in Future
C. Children Tend to Learn Determination from Father
D. Family Relationship Influences School Performance
D
On paper, hydrogen(氢气) looks like a dream fuel. Coal, oil, and natural gas produce carbon dioxide, which warms the earth when burned, Hydrogen produces pure water. Hydrogen packs more energy into less space than a battery (but certainly less than petrol). Also, empty tanks (燃料箱) can be refilled with hydrogen much faster than refilling empty batteries with electricity.
While in practice, things are trickier. Storing a meaningful amount of hydrogen gas requires pressing it several hundred-fold(百倍). Changing it into the liquid form is another option, but it should be cooled to -253°C. Both processes require a heavy and strong tank. While a 700 bar tank is acceptable for a city bus or a truck, adapting it for use in small vehicles is very difficult because the pressure during refilling would be too great.
The solution? Powerpaste.
A German team of researchers, led by Marcus Vogt, have come up with an interesting “powerpaste”, which can store hydrogen energy at atmospheric pressure, ready for release when needed. It is so named because it comes in tubes and looks like toothpaste , not in its traditional form of gas.
The main ingredient (原料) of the paste is magnesium hydride (二氢化镁), a substance that reacts with water to form hydrogen. The escaped hydrogen can then be directed into a fuel cell, where it reacts with oxygen from the air to produce electric power.
Refueling is very simple. Instead of going to a filling station, drivers and riders can simply replace an empty tube with a new one and refill the water tank.
Given that powerpaste only begins to break down at temperatures of around 250°C, it remains safe even when a vehicle stands in the baking sun for hours.
However, we will have to be patient. Just because researchers have succeeded in developing a new fueling way does not mean that we can expect to see such vehicles on the road anytime soon. It will indeed be several years before this concept is turned into reality.
32. As a fuel, what is the advantage of hydrogen over oil?
A. Refilling empty tanks will be more convenient.
B. It is less likely to worsen global warming.
C. More energy can be packed in the same space.
D. It will produce pure water for people to drink.
33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The practical difficulties to use hydrogen as fuel in small vehicles.
B. The detailed processes of adapting a strong tank in small vehicles.
C. The differences in fueling between large vehicles and small ones.
D. The tricks of building strong tanks in small vehicles.
34. The author mentions the refueling process to show that powerpaste is ____.
A. inexpensive B. powerful
C. convenient D. environment-friendly
35. Why does the author call on the readers to be patient?
A. Powerpaste-driven vehicles sometimes move very slowly on the road.
B. Practical use of powerpaste-driven vehicles will not come very soon.
C. Powerpaste-driven vehicles can only work after being in the sun for hours.
D. It will be years before the researchers work out the concept of powerpaste.

Also, take breaks. 39 . If you’ve been sitting, stand up and walk around. Moving your body will help relax your muscles. If you continue experiencing tech neck, you can do exercise to strengthen your neck muscles.
40 . If you’re aware of the problem, you can take measures to avoid it.
A. Drop down your smartphone right now and have a walk outside
B. Once in a while, look up from your screen, and roll your shoulders back

Once when I was a teenager, my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally, there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You could tell they didn’t have a lot of money.
Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean. The children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants, and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice.
One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be highlight of their young lives. The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be. The mother was holding her husband’s hand, looking up at him as if to say, “You are my knight(骑士) in shining armor(盔甲).”
He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say, “You got that right.” The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded, “Please let me buy eight children’s tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.”
The ticket lady gave the price. The man’s wife let go of his hand, her head dropped, and his lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, “How much did you say?”
The ticket lady again gave the price. The man didn’t have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn’t have enough money to take them to the circus?
Actually we were not wealthy in any sense. So I understood how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them.

Dear David,
I am sorry to hear that you have a problem with insomnia. To help you out, I’d love to offer you some advice.
First, it’s vital to form a healthy bedtime habit. You’d better not watch films for a long time or listen to music that excites you. Also, keeping a balanced diet plays a significant role in your good sleep. A cup of milk before bed may help you sleep sound through the whole night. More importantly, it’s a good idea to hold a positive attitude towards life instead of being anxious frequently.
I hope my advice is worth taking and will benefit you.

读后续写
Paragraph 1
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground. Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said, “Excuse me, sir. This fell out of your pocket.” The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on. He looked straight into my dad’s eyes, took my dad’s hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lips shaking and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, “ Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family.”
Paragraph 2
That day my father and I went back to our car and drove home without any tickets. We didn’t go to the circus that night. When I asked Dad why he did so, Dad said, “My child, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father. Surely he wasn’t begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young.” He paused for a while, as if wandering in his memory. “We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn’t go to the circus tonight, but we didn’t go without.”

34:C推理判断题。根据文章倒数第三段 “Refueling is very simple, as instead of going to a filling station, drivers and riders can simply replace an empty tube with a new one and refill the water tank.”(加油很简单,司机和乘客不需要去加油站,只需用一个新管子替换空管子,然后给水箱加水。)可知,作者提到了加油过程,说明给车辆加膏状氢燃料是很方便的。
35:B细节理解题。根据文章最后一段最后两句“Just because researchers have succeeded in developing a new fueling way does not mean that we can expect to see such vehicles on the road anytime soon. It will indeed be several years before this concept is turned into reality.”(仅仅是因为研究人员成功地开发出了一种新的加油方式并不意味着我们可以期待在短期内看到这样的车辆上路。实际上,这一概念要成为现实还需要数年的时间。)可知,作者呼吁读者要有耐心是因为这种新动力驱动的汽车的实际应用尚需时日,不会很快到来。

40:E由下文“If you’re aware of the problem, you can take measures to avoid it.” (如果你意识到了问题,你就能够采取措施来避免。)句中的avoid(避免)呼应选项中的“don’t have to be”

W: Welcome to Brian’s Club Center. You’re sure to enjoy yourself here. Everyone here can experience healthy living. Only fruit, vegetables, fish and chicken are served here. No red meat. As for the alcohol, we only provide red wine. You’re allowed to have one glass at lunchtime.
We must always keep in mind that exercise is important. However, it can also be harmful if you don’t know what you’re doing. So we make everyone an exercise plan here. Mostly it’s light exercise, such as walking or Tai Chi. Swimming is also encouraged.
You can also enjoy entertainment here. But you may have found that there is no TV in any of your rooms. It doesn’t mean that we don’t want you to relax. It’s just that we prefer you to relax in the garden, or chat in a group instead of watching TV inside.
Besides, you can see every day’s newspapers here. If you’d like the newspaper to be sent to your room each morning, please tell the people at reception. Reading is encouraged. There are lots of books in the library, all of which can be borrowed free of charge.
