Ray is a physical education teacher at Central Algoma Secondary School. This year, most of their classes were remote due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One day, Ray was talking to his daughter Sadie, who was set to graduate. The school was planning
to have teachers hand-deliver diplomas(毕业文凭)to each student’s home, but Sadie asked her dad if she could receive hers on a nearby outdoor stage instead.
“I said, ‘Sure, I’ll do that. No problem. Is there anybody else who would like to receive their
diploma on the stage? ’”Ray said. “And she said, ‘Yeah, everybody would like to get their diploma on the stage. ’”
Moved, the creative dad got to work to make it happen — not just for his daughter, but for all of the
graduating seniors! He spent about six hours one weekend building a portable(便携的)stage that he
could pull behind his trade. He then got permission from the school, and they eagerly agreed to help make his mobile graduation mission a success.
“It’s such an important event for so many people.... It was almost like the first win that we’ve had
in a year and a half after being beaten down,” Ray said. “We finally get to do this one thing that we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.”
Over the course of two days in late June, Ray traveled over 250 miles to give 72 graduates their big
moment!

Rain is vital to life on Earth. However, rain isn't just made of water anymore – it's partly made of plastic.
Millions of tiny pieces of plastic, called microplastics, are wandering around Earth's atmosphere
and traveling across entire continents, according to a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on April 12. Another study, published in the journal Science in June 2020,has revealed that every year more than 1,000 tons of the particles (颗粒)- equivalent to over 120
million plastic bottles - fall in rain.
Microplastics are plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter (直径) and come from a number of sources. Plastic bags and bottles released into the environment break down into smaller and
smaller bits. Some microplastics are manufactured deliberately to provide abrasion(研磨)in a host of
products, such as toothpaste and cleansers, according to the Daily Mail. Another major source is your washing machine. When you wash synthetic (合成的)clothing, tiny microfibers get flushed (冲掉) away
with the wastewater. Even though the water is treated by a wastewater plant, the microplastics remain, and they are released into the sea, according to American magazine Wired.
Plastic rain may remind people of acid rain, but the former is far more widespread and harder to
deal with. The tiny particles, too small to be seen with the naked eye, are collected by the wind from the ground. They are so light that they stay in the air to be blown around the globe. As they climb into the atmosphere, they are thought to act as nuclei (核心) around which water vapor (水蒸气) condenses (凝
结) to form clouds. Some of the dust falls back to land in dry conditions, while the rest comes down as
rain, according to the Daily Mail.
Microplastics have been found everywhere you can imagine. From fish and frogs to mice and mosquitoes, their bodies have been found, on average, to contain 40 pieces of microplastic, reported Daily Mail. As the top of the food chain, humans are exposed to microplastics, too. "We live on a ball inside a bubble," microplastic researcher Steve Allen at University of Strathclyde, Scotland, told Wired.

"There are no borders, there are no edges. It (plastic rain) is raining on the land and then getting blown back up into the air again, to move somewhere else. There's no stopping it once it's out."
28.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. How microplastics are used widely. B. How microplastics come into being.
C. How microplastics pollute water. D. How microplastics should be handled.
29.What do we know about microplastics?
A. They are light and can be easily dealt with.
B. They result in both acid rain and plastic rain.
C. They have nearly affected the whole food chain.
D. They have a diameter of at least 5 millimeters.
30.What do Steve Allen's words mean in the last paragraph?
A. .Countries should work together to fight plastic pollution.
B. The atmosphere possesses the capacity to self-cleanse
C. It is important to remove microplastics somewhere else.
D. No place is safe from microplastic pollution.
31.What's the main purpose of the article?
A. To introduce the sources and effects of microplastics.
B. To compare acid rain and plastic rain.
C. To call on people to reduce using plastic products.
D. To warn people of the dangers of microplastics.
D
On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than
they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time. All in all, however, children’s leisure time dropped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.
“Children are affected by the same time crunch ( 危 机 ) that affects their parents,” says Sandra
Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and “male breadwinner” households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers.)
All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. “Play is the most powerful
way a child explores the world and learns about himself,” says T. Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School. Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaged in it.
The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing “free time” watching television.
But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t replacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time?
32. What does the underlined phrase “the same time crunch” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Children have little time to play with their parents.
湖北省重点中学*沃学联盟*2022届高三(上)期中联考英语试卷 第5页(共8页)
B. Both parents and children have trouble managing their time.
C. Children are not taken good care of by their working parents.
D. Both parents and children suffer from lack of leisure time.
33. In the author’s opinion, a child develops better if _________.
A. he has plenty of time reading and studying
B. he is free to interact with his working parents
C. he is left to play with his peers in his own way
D. he has more time participating in school activities
34. What does the author worry about American kids?
A. They are increasingly ignored by their working mothers.
B. They are engaged in more and more structured activities.
C. They are spending more and more time watching TV.
D. They are involved less and less in household work.
35. What can we conclude from the text?
A. Most parents believe reading to be beneficial to children.
B. After-class activities promote children’s intelligence.
C. Efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitful.
D. Most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched off.

第二节(满分25 分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One Saturday morning, Jeremy woke up to a quiet house. Usually Mom was awake making breakfast and cleaning the kitchen, but not today. At the sound of his mom coughing, Jeremy knocked on her bedroom door and asked with great concern, “Mom, are you ok?” “Honey,” Mom said weakly. “I have a terrible cold. You can have cereal (燕麦) for breakfast and watch cartoons. I’m going to stay in
bed.”
Jeremy poured some cereal into a bowl and ate the pieces dry. Mom must feel very bad if she
was staying in bed all day. How could Jeremy help? First, he wiped up the crumbs(食物碎屑) of cereal
he left on the kitchen counter. He also put away the cereal box neatly, so the kitchen looked just as it did when he woke up. But what else could he do? Jeremy thought. Saturday was the day when mom did laundry. Jeremy loved to watch the clothes spinning in the machine. That should be fun! He ran to his room to get the laundry basket, inside which there was his mother’s favorite white dress, among other clothes and a pair of red socks.
Jeremy opened the door to the washer and put the clothes inside. He had watched Mom do laundry
lots of times, so he knew where to find the washing powder and how to pour it into the machine. Finally,
he closed the door and pressed the big button that said “START.” Jeremy looked through the round glass
window. Water was pouring in, and the machine was starting to spin, making his clothing tumble around. That was easy!
Jeremy watched cartoons until he heard the washing machine beep. That meant the washing was
done. Jeremy opened the door to take out the damp clothes. He took out a few at a time and moved them
into the dryer. Everything seemed clean, and Jeremy felt proud. Then he pulled out a pink dress.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But he remembered there was no pink dress in the laundry basket.

Holding the pink dress, Jeremy nervously knocked at his mom’s bedroom door again.
