    第二部分  阅读共两节,满分50

    阅读下列短文,从每题所给的ABCD四个选项中选出最佳选项。

    A

    72 hours in Beijing

Traveling to China is no longer a luxury for many foreign passport holders. The Chinese government has permitted a 72-hour visa-free policy that offers access to visitors from 53 countries including the US, France and Austria. Let’s start with the capital of China, Beijing. Here’s a pick of the best in Beijing!

    Mutianyu Great Wall

Your trip to Beijing isn’t really complete without seeing one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World”, the Great Wall of China. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is by far the most well-preserved of all. Taking a one-hour bus ride, Mutianyu would be your ideal location for a half-day of hiking away from the large crowds in the city. Also, the authorities have allowed tourists to paint graffiti on a specific section of the Great Wall since 2014. The Great Wall was designated(定名为) a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

    Summer Palace

Located in northwestern Beijing, the Summer Palace is by far the city’s most well-preserved royal park. With its huge lake and hilltop views, the palace offers you a pastoral escape into the landscape of traditional Chinese paintings. The Summer Palace was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1998.

    798 Art Zone

This would be on the top of my list! Named after the 798 factory that was built in the 1950s, the art zone is home to various galleries, design studios, art exhibition spaces, fashionable shops and bars. You could easily spend half your day wandering around the complex, feeling the contrast of the present and the past.

    Sichuan Provincial Restaurant

While in Beijing, apart from trying the city’s best-known Peking duck, the Sichuan provincial restaurant is one of places where you can enjoy regional delicious food. It offers one of China’s eight great cuisines, Sichuan Cuisine, which ranges from Mapo tofu to spicy chicken.

    21. How does the author describe Mutianyu Great Wall?

     A. Tourists need a half-day to arrive there.

     B. Tourists are allowed to paint graffiti anywhere.

     C. It is the most well-maintained part of the Great Wall.

     D. It was named a UNESCO World Heritage site 20 years ago.

    22. Where would you go first if you were the author?

     A. Mutianyu Great Wall.   B. Summer Palace.

     C. 798 Art Zone.   D. Sichuan Provincial Restaurant.

    23. Who is the passage intended for?

     A. The tourists who prefer to travel for free.

     B. The foreigners to stay in Beijing for 3 days.

     C. The visitors coming from every corner of China.

     D. The foreigners coming to Beijing for the first time.

    B

One day after more than a month of classes, I read aloud a paragraph from my book, recognizing all of the characters smoothly except for one. I sat back and started to register the achievement: I was actually reading Chinese. The language was starting to make sense. But before the sense of satisfaction was half formed, Teacher Liao said, “Bu dui!”

It meant, literally, “Not correct.” You could also translate it as no, wrong, nope, uh-uh. Flatly and clearly incorrect. There were many Chinese words that I didn’t know, but I knew that one well.

A voice in my head whined: All of the rest of them were right, isn’t that worth something? But for Teacher Liao it didn’t work like that. If one character was wrong it was simply budui.

“What’s this word?” I asked, pointing at the character I had missed.

    “Zhe the zhe in Zhejiang.”

    “Third tone?”

    “Fourth tone.”

I breathed deeply and read the section again, and this time I did it perfectly. That was a victory I turned to Teacher Liao and my eyes said (or at least I imagined them saying): How do you like me now? There seemed to be some satisfaction in her ayes, but she simply said, “Read the next one.”

It was her way of teaching. Success was expected and failure criticized and immediately corrected. You were right or you were budui; there was no middle ground.

I grew to hate budui. The bu was a rising tone and the dui dropped abruptly, like building my confidence and then breaking down all at once. And it bothered me all the more because I knew that Teacher Liao was only telling the truth: everything I did with the language was budui. I was an adult, and as an adult I should be able to accept criticism where it was needed. But that wasn’t the American way; I wanted to be praised for my effort; I didn’t mind criticism as long as it was candy-coated. In China, the single B on the report card matters much more than all the A’s that surround it. Keep working; you haven’t achieved anything yet.

And so I studied. I was frustrated but I was also stubborn; I was determined to show Teacher Liao that I was dui.

    24. Which of the following can best replace “whined” in Paragraph 3?

     A. Burst out.  B. Gave in.  C. Returned. D. Complained.

    25. What did the writer expect from Teacher Liao after he tried again?

     A. Immediate correction.   B. A new challenge.

     C. An encouraging response.  D. A strict comment.

    26. How did the writer feel about the Chinese way of teaching?

     A. Candy-coated.   B. Weakness-focused.  C. Interest-driven.   D. Criticism-absent.

    27. What can we infer from the text?

     A. The writer was struggling with Liao’s teaching.

     B. The writer was not gifted in language learning.

     C. Teacher Liao was not friendly with her students.

     D. The American way of teaching is better for adults.

    C

Like so many other good things in life, sleep is best at a right length. A multi-year study of older adults found that both short and long sleepers experienced greater cognitive(认知的) decline than people who slept a proper a mount, even when the effects of early Alzheimer’s disease were taken into account.

“Our study suggests that there is a middle range, or ‘sweet spot’, for total sleep time where cognitive performance is stable over time. Short and long sleep time is associated with worse cognitive performance,” said first author Brendan Lucey, an associate professor of the Washington University Sleep Medicine Center. “An unanswered question is if we can intervene to improve sleep, would that have a positive effect on their cognitive performance so they no longer decline? We need more further data to answer this question.”

Lucey and colleagues tuned to volunteers who participate in Alzheimer’s studies through the university’s Charles F and Joanne Knight Alzheimer Disease Research Center. Such volunteers experienced annual clinical and cognitive assessments, and provided a blood sample to be tested. For this study, each participant slept with a tiny EEG monitor attached to their heads for four to six nights to measure their brain activities during sleep.

The researchers found a U-shaped relationship between sleep and cognitive decline. Overall, cognitive scores declined for the groups that slept less than 4.5 or more than 6.5 hours per night while scores stayed stable for those in the middle of the range.

The U-shaped relationship held true for measures of specific sleep phases, including rapid-eye movement (REM), or dreaming sleep and non-REM sleep. Moreover, the same is true even after adjusting for factors that can affect both sleep and cognition, such as age, sex, levels of Alzheimer’s proteins. “It was particularly interesting to see that not only those with short amounts of sleep but also those with long amounts of sleep had more cognitive decline,” said Professor Beau M. Ances.

“Each person’s sleep needs are unique, and people who wake up feeling rested on short or long sleep schedules should not feel forced to change their habits,” said co-senior author David Holtzman, MD. “But those who are not sleeping well should be aware that sleep problems often can be treated.”

    28. What’s the passage mainly about?

     A. The effects of Alzheimer’s disease. B. The benefits of best sleep.

     C. The influence of sleep time on cognition. D. The good things in life.

    29. According to the passage, which sleep time is suitable?

     A. 4 hours.  B. 6 hours.    C. 7 hours         . D. 7.5 hours.

    30. What can we know about U-shaped relationship?

     A. The sleep time has no connection with cognitive scores.

     B. The longer sleep time is, the higher cognitive scores are.

     C. Cognition is related to different sleep phases.

     D. It is not effective when age, sex, and so on are considered.

    31. What does David Holtzman’s words imply?

     A. Quality of sleep is the key.

     B. Long time sleepers do not have cognitive decline.

     C. Short sleep schedules must change their habits.

     D. Both long time and shot time sleepers have sleep problems.

    第二节满分20

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My efforts to learn, read, write and speak English have been a significant challenge in my life. When I first came to the United States from Hong Kong about 12 years ago, I could barely communicate in English. Today, although I still have much to learn, I realize I have made a good amount of progress in my years abroad.

I grew up in a small village in China, where no one I knew spoke English. I wasn’t exposed to English or any other language through books, magazines or TV. Only when I later went to study in Hong Kong, was I exposed to American and Western culture through movies, music and other media. Although English is common in Hong Kong due to its history, I still couldn’t speak, read or write much after graduating from high school.

In my early 20s, I decided to move to New York City and I was determined to make a new life for myself there. However, I didn’t want to end up speaking my native language because I knew that learning English was very important if I wanted to be successful in this new country. New York seemed like another world and without speaking much English it was even more difficult to make friends.

I didn’t have a teacher at first, so I tried every way I could to learn the language. One way that was very useful was listening to the radio and watching TV, mostly news. I tried to speak like the people I heard on TV. They spoke more clearly and it was easier to understand than the English I heard people speaking in my neighborhood. I picked up one word at a time, and looked them up in the dictionary. I would also try to write down the words and remember them. I made a goal of learning at least 20 new words every day.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右;

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

After a while I made friends.

    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Thinking back on the ways I have learned English over the years, I have something to say.

Firstly, I are eager to learn a general information about the Silk Road, which may help me plan my schedule. Besides, whats the function of the Silk Road in the past and in the present? And due to my tight schedule, please recommend me some amazing places featuring the local culture, which are worthy of a visit. Of course, I dont want to miss the local cuisines since I am a total foodie.

    第二节 20

    One possible version:

After a while I made friends. They were another way I learned English. I would pick up a lot of cool expressions just from spending time with them and listening to them speak. My friends were patient with me and helped me a lot, but I often became discouraged. Seeing I gave up speaking English, they tried to encourage me to speak out. They often invited me to their parties where I was surrounded by English atmosphere and I was forced to communicate with them in English.

Thinking back on the ways I have learned English over the years, I have something to say. It is clear that I am a visual learner — I learn by seeing and looking. I had the most success when reading and using written materials. I enjoyed reading books, newspapers and magazines. Of course, it is also very important to be able to speak and listen. So, I spent lots of time trying to develop these skills, like getting involved in social activities with friends. So, if I could become more and more fluent, so can you!
