一、 阅读理解
With the Chinese New Year coming, Let’s welcome the Year of the Tiger.
Do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger? What's their personality like?
Are they brave, strong and tenacious (顽强的)? If so, then they are a typical “tiger”.
In Chinese culture, tigers are considered the king of all beasts. They symbolize power, energy, protection, generosity and unpredictability (难以捉摸). Tigers are regarded as fearless creatures, so that's why in China you can see images of tigers on the walls of temples and houses toward off disasters and danger.
Tigers have an important cultural meaning not just in China, but across Asia. As they mostly live in Asia, for many people in the West they have become a cultural symbol of Eastern countries. For example, strong economies in the East – Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and Taiwan – were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pi (《少年派的奇幻漂流》), Canadian writer Yann Martel chose a Bengal (孟加拉) tiger as the partner for Indian boy Pi on his survival adventure in the Pacific Ocean. French fashion brand KENZO takes the tiger as its main theme when it tries to embody (体现) Eastern elements with European design.
Instead of tigers, lions are considered as the king of all beasts in the West. Brave warriors (勇士) were given
the name “the lion”. In Europe, the animal is a national emblem (标志) for England as well as for Norway, Spain,
Belgium and 13 other countries.
But in the West, tigers are also seen as a very powerful animal. In English, if you want someone to calm down,
you can say to them, “easy tiger”. Another famous phrase is: “Eye of the Tiger”, which means fierceness and
strength.
Tigers are also one of my favorite animals. I first learned about the beauty of tigers as a child, while watching
animal documentaries. If you ask my mom, she’ll tell you that my most precious toy while growing up was my
toy tiger, which I still treasure dearly to this day. As a young animal lover, I felt so sad that they were an
endangered species(物种) and I wanted to help protect them.
This is why I love that China has its animal zodiac system, as it shows the connection, understanding and
respect that humans can have for animals.
Just like tigers serve as a symbol of protection in Chinese culture, we can only hope that in the Year of
the Tiger more people can learn about tigers and help protect them and their habitats from further destruction.

With the Winter Olympics coming, Beijing is aiming to hold a “simple and safe” 2022 Games.
Many anti-epidemic (防疫) technologies will soon make their debut (首次亮相) to support the world-class
sporting event. These include several new and advanced technologies.
Fresh air
Air disinfection (消毒) equipment is crucial to guarantee the health and safety of all Games participants, as COVID-19 can be transmitted through the air. The Winter Olympics will use large mobile air purifiers (净化器).
The mobile air purifiers use a solid alkali (碱) as a filter (过滤器), which can actively capture (捕获) and eliminate bacteria in the air, ensuring that large closed venues (场馆) have clean air all the time.
The purifiers have already been used at the 130th session (届) of China Import and Export Fair, the first offline session after the pandemic broke out. It had more than 600,000 in-person visits, with no new COVID-19 cases reported.
Disinfection robot
Wukesong Sports Center in Beijing will be the venue for the ice hockey event, in which different types of
robots will be used to ensure the health and safety of everyone in the venue. The use of robots has lowered the
number of staff required in the stadium to around 1,000.
The robots play a leading role in disinfecting the stadium. They spray (喷洒) a fog of disinfectant through
the fan at the top of their heads, which can sterilize (消毒) an area of 36 square meters in one minute. A robot can
cover 1,000 square meters on a single charge.
The 1.4-meter-tall robot has a giraffe-like neck with a fan on its head, and a chubby (圆胖的) belly, which
can hold 16 liters of disinfectant at a time.
The robot is also very intelligent. It is equipped with a radar (雷达), which it uses to navigate (导航) around
the venue. It can also connect to a mobile app, enabling people to set locations for it to sanitize (消毒).
Inspection robot
“Hello friend, please wear a mask,” says a robot named Xiaobai, developed by a Beijing-based company.
With a height of 74 cm, the robot can recognize people within five meters. It will automatically walk over to
a person who is not wearing a mask and advise him or her to wear one.
Equipped with autonomous driving software and hardware, the robot walks at a speed of 6 to 10 kilometers
per hour. The robot can work for 10 hours straight, as long as its inspection (巡检) routes have been set in
advance.
A digital checking system for health
Wukesong Sports Center in Beijing has also set up a digital health check system. After checking a staff member’s temperature and scanning their QR code, their health code and travel and vaccination (接种疫苗) record will be sent to a smart terminal (终端), which can be monitored remotely in real time. The information can be used in the event of a COVID-19 outbreak.

Zhong Kaitong, a fourth-grader from Guangzhou, enjoyed a fun vacation this summer. Instead of attending English or math training courses, she played badminton and basketball most of the time.
A new guideline (指导方针) introduced by central authorities (中央政府) on July 24 helped Zhong enjoy some free time during the summer. Aiming to ease (减少) the schoolwork burden (负担) on primary and junior high school students, the guideline calls for reducing homework, improving the quality of education and regulating (规范) after-class activities,

May 15, Zhang Rongqiao wiped tears from his eyes as China’s Mars rover (巡视器) Zhurong landed safely on Mars. “I was so excited,” said Zhang.
As the chief designer (总设计师) of China’s Tianwen 1 Mars mission (任务), Zhang was chosen by the journal Nature on Dec 16 as one of the top 10 people “who helped shape science” in 2021. Under Zhang, China made a huge step in interplanetary (行星间的) exploration. “I got a taste of the old Chinese saying – it takes 10 years to sharpen a good sword,” Zhang told Nature.
In the Mars mission, Zhang led a team of thousands of researchers. The team was not only responsible for technical work like launches and flight control, but also for scientific research on Mars.
The challenges were many. They knew little about the strange and complex (复杂的) environment of Mars. “We may not even know what we do not know about,” Zhang told Nature.

During the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), King Zhao of the State of Yan (燕昭王) wanted to gather talented people to make the state strong. He asked the scholar (有学问的人) Guo Wei for advice. Guo told the king a story.
In ancient times, there was a king who wanted a special kind of horse. This horse could run 1,000 li a day. It was called qianlima. He sent many people to find these horses and buy them for him. After three years, nobody found him such a horse.
One day, someone new volunteered to help. Within three months, he heard about a qianlima. He rushed to find it, but the horse was already dead. Still, he bought the bones of the horse with 500 pieces of gold.
The king was very angry. “What I want is a live horse, not the bones of a dead horse!”
The man answered calmly (冷静地), “Imagine this. You’re willing to pay a high price for a dead horse, let alone a live one. This shows people you truly wish to buy the horses. Just wait and the horses you want will come very soon.”
Indeed (的确), within a year, many qianlima owners brought their horses to the king.
Guo told the king that he could see himself as the bones of the horse. “If I am valued (重视), more talent will be willing (愿意的) to serve the state,” he said. The king built houses for Guo and treated him as a teacher. Soon, talented people across the state came to help the king. His state finally beat the State of Qi.
We can better understand the story by reading the essay (文章) On Horses (《马说》) by Han Yu, a writer in the Tang Dynasty. In the essay, Han wrote that qianlima are common, but a person who can find them is rare. It tells us that talented people are common. Finding them is difficult.
The story helps us understand that talented people are important to society. They deserve (应得) respect. President Xi Jinping once told this story to officials, asking them to respect talented people. More importantly, the story pushes us to think about our own talents. It means to develop your all-around (全面的) abilities and create opportunities for yourself. Instead of waiting for someone to find you, you can actively sell yourself.

A. Talented people. B. Qianlima. C. The bones of a qianlima. D. Wealth.
2. In Guo’s story, the king got angry with the man because he thought _____.
A. qianlima weren’t the best horses in the world
B. there wasn’t a qianlima in the world
C. the bones were not from a qianlima
D. a dead horse was of no use at all
3. What was the man’s reason for buying the bones of a dead horse?

【答案】
Good morning, everyone! Since the “double reduction” policy was released, our lives have changed a lot. Next let me talk about it.
We used to do our homework till midnight and have no time for our hobbies. At the same time, we always attended many training courses at weekends. So we felt very tired all the time.
However, with the support of the “double reduction” policy, though we go home late, we have more interesting activities we like, like playing football and other ball games, learning playing the piano and violin, handwriting, drawing and so on. We feel very excited when we join in these activities. Moreover, we can have more time to communicate with our parents because we have little homework after school. And we can get on well with our teachers and classmates.
I believe we can study happily and have fun at school because of the “double reduction” policy.
