A. Choose the best answer (选择最恰当的答案)
“What super power do you wish you had?” Torrey Maldonado asks this question when he talks at schools about his novel (小说), “T ight”. “Every kid wants super speed, super strength, flying, etc.”
In his book, the main character, Bryan, wishes he was a superhero.
But Maldonado reminds (提醒) kids that they already have important power: the power to
, which, Maldonado says, can be easier to say than to act on, because he himself, too, faced tough (艰难的) choices in middle school, just like Bryan, and he knows the choice is seldom between
completely right and completely wrong.
Take Bryan’s friend, Mike, for example. Different from Bryan, Mike, though he also loves superheroes, has another side. He takes Bryan into doing things that Bryan has always thought are
wrong and when Bryan pushes back, he makes fun of him, but Bryan doesn’t know what to do or how to step away from the friendship.
When Maldonado talks to students about this book and the character’s choices, he says he often feels as if he’s talking to a younger himself, because growing up in a neighborhood like Bryan’s,
Maldonado knew many kids like Mike. And now as a middle school teacher, he still sees his students faced with similar choices.
“Some bullies (仗势欺人者) are cool and popular, like Mike. You should know how to deal with
them.” he said.
Maldonado is working on a new novel about a mixed-race boy. The boy sometimes wishes he had a certain superpower, Super speed like the Flash.

We often say that intelligence means being able to solve problems. Sometimes animals seem able to do this. 66 , dogs and cats often find their way home from long distance. To do this, they have to use their intelligence. They have to remember and think. But many birds find their way over long distances, too. They 67 thousands of miles every year when they move from cold to warm countries. We do not know how they do this, but we know they do not use their intelligence. They do not remember places and directions and then make decisions. 68 birds are able to make these journeys without help as soon as they can fly. They are born with this ability. This is not intelligence.
We call this “instinct”(本能).
Often we cannot be sure whether an animal is 69 intelligently or instinctively. When a dog hears a strange noise, it barks. This is instinct. It does not 70 know why it is doing this. But suppose a house is on fire and the dog barks outside its master’s bedroom until he wakes up. Is it solving the problem by waking its master or is it simply barking instinctively because it is afraid? Often we cannot be sure.
Many animals, however, can be taught to solve problems, especially when they are given rewards. Rats have been taught to touch a key to get food. Animals in circuses(马戏团) have been taught to do
all sorts of tricks to amuse the audience. In all these 71 _, we may say that an animal is using intelligence. This may be thought of as a low kind of intelligence.

内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给)
More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, teaching tools like iPads are used in a lot of courses, i 72 language, history and science.
Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class
prepared for discussion.
The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially h 73 to the students who are learning a language at different paces.
The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (like listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.
There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are s 74 in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. ‘I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait till I get home,’ a student explained.
But many adults c 75 that technologies like iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have f 76 chances to have face-to-face communication with others. However, technologies are a 77 a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make
c 78 with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a
wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
