Xu Xiake was one of a kind in Chinese history. Four centuries ago, Xu spent about thirty years on the road. He set foot on more than half of China’s land.
Xu was born in a rich family in Jiangyin, Jiangsu. His mother was well educated. She encouraged her son to read different kinds of books. But at the age of 15, Xu failed the imperial examinations(科举考试), which were seen as a key to getting a job in the government. Xu was disappointed. He wasn’t sure if he should follow in his father’s footsteps and be a farmer. “At home you’re like a fenced-in chicken. You couldn’t learn or experience anything new.” Xu’s mother told him. “Go travel and show me paintings of the sights you see.”
Then Xu started his journey. He went to every province in China. He visited many busy cities such as Nanjing and enjoyed the beauty of Huangshan in Anhui, West Lake in Hangzhou, Wuyishan in Fujian, etc.
During his journey, Xu was swindled(诈骗)more than once. He often went the wrong way or got lost. He once traded a poem for a basket of mushrooms(蘑菇)because he didn’t have money for food. He even changed his clothes for food.
Xu wrote all his experiences in his travel diary. His 600, 000-word Xu Xiake youji was published in 1776. He was not only a traveler and a great writer, but also a scientist some way ahead of his time.

①US singer and actress Barbra Streisand lost her pet dog, Samantha. However, she wasn’t ready to give her up completely. She spent $50,000 and had her dog cloned(克隆).
②Many people, like Streisand, can’t imagine life without their four-legged friends. So the idea of “bringing your dead pet back to life” sounds wonderful. However, are we really making a good decision to have our pets cloned?
③Cloned animals aren’t created easily. Take Streisand’s dog as an example. It requires the help of female(雌性的) dogs. First, scientists take some cells(细胞)from the dead (or dying) dog. Then, they take special cells from a female dog. The cells of the two dogs are mixed with each other. After that, scientists put the cells into another female dog. The cells will grow into new baby dogs. The baby dogs will usually be born 60 days later. Sometimes, the clones die shortly after birth. Cloning companies will try again and that means more dogs will have to suffer(受苦).
④If you have ever considered having your dog cloned, you should think it over now. Many scientists are against pet cloning. Some of them say cloning companies are taking advantage of people who miss their pets. Some are worried that if people clone their pets, they will never adopt (收养)other pets. Millions of dogs and cats are waiting for a home.
⑤Companies that offer pet cloning services are selling a dream of never having to say goodbye to our pets. But this is an unhealthy dream, both for the pet owner and for those female animals that are used as tools.
⑥______▲______. But why should we spread the suffering to other animals just because we love our pets? Why should we make our relationship with animals all about ourselves?
38.At the beginning of the passage, the writer leads in the topic by ________.
A.telling a story B.answering questions
C.showing a picture D.giving an example
39.What can we know from Paragraph 3?
A.Cloning might bring harm to animals.
B.Streisand’s cloned dog lived a short life.
C.It takes scientists 60 days to clone animals.
D.Cloning companies usually try to clone animals twice.
40.Which of the following can be put in the ________?
A.Losing a pet is sad for most of us.
B.We always have a good time with our pets.
C.The cloned animals may die soon and easily.
D.We hope our pets can stay with us for a long time.
41.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To encourage people to adopt pets.
B.To advise people to give up cloning pets.
C.To ask us to take good care of pets when they are alive.
D.To introduce a new way of bringing dead pets back to life.
“Have you checked the oil in the car? ” my father used to say to me. “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our phone calls would begin with a question about the oil and end with a question about the oil without other words.
Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often shown through the ways of practical advice. In my experience: It’s mostly about my car. “How’s the car running?” “Did you get it serviced?” “How did you get that scrape(刮痕) on the side?”
Why can’t we fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? The point is: That’s exactly what we are saying. You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish. Listen closely enough and instead of “love you”, you will hear “I could come on Saturday and replace the seal(密封圈) around the base of your toilet because I am sure the thing is getting really smelly.” The words “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be hardly heard, but the key is there in the more common “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves off the roof.”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip—a friend and I in that old car. My father stood on the corner early on a cold morning to say goodbye to us. “Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try to catch up with anything faster than a horse. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.” At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would chant “car and horse, car and horse” every time I drove faster and passed other speeding cars.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that if I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I’d understood what we laughed at was actually the love dad wanted to express.
42.What did the father usually talk about with the writer?
A.His job. B.His car. C.His schoolwork. D.His friend.
43.What did the father hardly ever say to his son?
A.It’s great to see you. B.How’s the car running?
C.Highways are dangerous. D.Have you checked the oil in the car?
44.When the writer told his first road trip, his father told him ________.
A.not to drive a car. B.not to drive too fast.
C.not to race with a horse. D.not to stay with a stranger.
45.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.My father has gone somewhere faraway.
B.I understood father’s love when I was 17.
C.I regretted making fun of my father’s speech.
D.I owned a copy of Fatherlish-to-English dictionary.
