I was in the Altai Muntains with Bisphere Expeditins（生物圈考察队）as a member f the first team t take part in a survey f snw lepards（雪豹） in this part f the wrld.
Getting t the base camp had been an expeditin in itself. It was getting dark as we arrived. After a very welcme night's sleep we were up early fr a cuple f days training n hw t fill in the datasheets,identify tracks and prints and what t d with useful animal drppings amngst ther things.
The next day fur f us set ff up ne f the muntains t d ur first surveying with ur guide Oleg. We spent mst f the mrning climbing the endlessly steep muntain with little cmmunicatin frm Oleg wh nly became active when we stpped t take n water. By early afternn we reached what appeared t be the tp but was anther ridge（山脊）．My 47-year-ld bnes were shaking and I was struggling t breathe. We hadn't seen a thing except fr rcky muntains. Our guide was keeping ging but we had very little idea abut what we were suppsed t be ding. Energy was drpping rapidly.
Then everything changed. The radi came t life. Hardly able t speak thrugh excitement, ne f the ther grups tld us that they had just discvered fresh snw lepard tracks!
On arrival， we fund the ther grup silently lking a gulf（溪谷）. A set f very clear paw prints ran frm tp t bttm. I was filled with a feeling f cmplete exhilaratin. One f the rarest big cats in the wrld had passed thrugh where I was standing! They were here and what we were ging t d wuld help them survive.
All the suffering f the past days fell away. The lng walk back t the base camp that night seemed t g by in secnds.
