Chinese painting, also known as the traditional national painting, one of the traditional paintings with a long history, has its unique and independent system. Using brushes, ink, and Chinese pigments (天然颜料), a painting is drawn on a special kind of paper (Xuan paper) or silk. The traditional subjects are figures, landscapes, flowers and birds.

In comparison with Western painting, Chinese painting has its own artistic characteristics. After a careful study of the object, a painter can discover the rules of its structure, and then produce it by the mind's eye. It is not merely a simple copy, but it combines the object with the artistic concept of the producer, turning a natural image into an “artistic image”. The object can show the artist's feelings and personality to achieve the effect of “being alike not only in spirit, but also in appearance”. Not all the objects are to be drawn on the paper, and much space is left for the imagination. The use of lines is important in Chinese painting. Clear, swift, sharp and changeable lines are combined with the push, point and press of the brush and ink to show the quality of the object and variations of tone (色调). Ancient Chinese artists listed 18 different ways of drawing lines with the brush in figure painting. Different ways of creating lines are used when painting a landscape, flowers and birds, clouds, and bamboos.

Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy are different branches of art stemming (起源) from the same origin. They use the same kind of tools and all the lines used in painting are variations of the points and lines of calligraphy. Though they are different artistic forms, they are closely linked in terms of their expression of thoughts and feelings. They influence each other to create another artistic feature.

Xiǎolóngbāo or soup dumpling is a type of baozi from eastern China, including Shanghai and Wuxi. It is traditionally steamed in small bamboo baskets, hence the name.

The nice­looking buns (圆形的小面包或点心) are small in size, with a thin skin and lots of filling. The buns are also filled with soup, tasty and delicious. The skin made of flour is elastic (有弹性) but will not  stick to your teeth. There are various types of fillings, with pure pork being the most popular choice. Whatever filling it may be, tasty soup must be added to give a unique taste to the buns. Otherwise, the buns would not be qualified for being xiaolongbao.

Shanghai is the home of the xiaolongbao. When you say Shanghai, one of the first things that people may think about is Shanghai xiaolongbao. No list of Shanghai's favorite foods would ever be complete without the mention of it. The dumpling, cleverly hiding its soup within its wonderful wrapper, is attractive to people. However, eating xiaolongbao is indeed an art and a technique. You have to puncture the dumpling wrapper to let out the steam, and then slurp (啜食) the soup slowly before eating xiaolongbao. When served onto the table, the buns are best to be eaten while they are hot, though it would burn the mouths and tongues!

The Shanghai­style xiaolongbao is native to Nanxiang, a suburb of Shanghai in the Jiading District. The inventor of xiaolongbao sold them in his first store in Nanxiang next to the town's park. From there, the xiaolongbao expanded into downtown Shanghai and outward.

Two specialist xiaolongbao restaurants are often regarded as the most authentic (正宗的). One is the Nanxiang Bun Shop, which comes from the original store in Nanxiang but is now located in the City God Temple district. It is famous for its crab meat­filled buns. The other is Gulong Restaurant, at the original site next to Guyi Garden in Nanxiang.
