Got a messy desk? Don’t worry. It likely means you’re creative and full of new ideas. A clean desk, by contrast, suggests generosity and tradition. “Previous study found that a clean setting leads people to do good things,” said Kathleen Vohs, a researcher from University of Minnesota. “We found, however, that you can get really valuable outcomes from being in a messy setting.”

In the first of several experiments, some participants (参与者) were asked to complete a task in a clean and orderly office, while others did so in an messy one with papers and office supplies everywhere. Afterward, the participants were given a chance to donate to a charity. “Being in a clean room seemed to encourage people to do what was expected of them,” Vohs said, “compared with the participants in the messy room, the participants in the clean room donated more of their own money to charity.”

But the researchers overlooked that messiness might have its advantages as well. In an—other experiment, the participants were asked to come up with new uses for ping—pong balls. The participants in the messy room got the same number of ideas for new uses for the balls as the ones in the clean—room did, but their ideas were considered as more interesting and creative.

“Being in a messy room led to something that firms, industries and societies want more of: creativity,”Vohs said. “The researchers also found that disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition, which can produce fresh ideas,” Vohs said. “Orderly environments, in contrast, encourage tradition and playing it safe,” Vohs added. “Just making that environment tidy or untidy made such a great difference in people’s behavior.”

    21. What is the purpose of paragraph 1?

    A. To raise a question for readers to discuss.

    B. To present the main topic of the text.

    C. To question the findings of previous study.

    D. To draw attention to human’s good qualities.

    22. How was the first experiments mainly carried out?

    A. By making comparisons. B. By referring to a theory.

    C. By giving some examples. D. By analyzing cause and effect.

    23. What does Vohs think of the disorderly environments?

    A. Interesting and creative ideas can be inspired.

    B. The messier the environment is, the better it is.

    C. The disorderly environments need to be cleaned up.

    D. Bad habits may be formed in such an environment.

    24. What is the best title for the text?

    A. It Is Time to Break Traditions

    B. Clean up Your Messy Desk Now

    C. What a Messy Desk Says about You

    D. How Can You Deal with a Messy Personality

                                          B

You can never imagine the social distancing policy(政策) led to some lifelong friendships between people who would have otherwise never met during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The unlikely friendship began at the peak of the lockdown(活动限制、封控) in May 2020. The lockdown was particularly hard for Mary O’Neill, who has been living alone since her husband passed away 37 years ago. Though she has two children, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, most live out of state. The 99-year-old spent her days watching television game shows and playing Yahtzee. Benjamin Olson, a then one-year-old who lived next door, was also stuck at home and unable to play with kids of his age.

The unusual friendship developed gradually. At first, Mary would wave at Benjamin from her window whenever she saw the young boy in the yard. Then, she ventured outside to greet him in person. The routine eventually expanded to daily gatherings by the fence that separated the two homes. The unlikely pair even invented a socially distanced game that Mary calls “cane ball.”

“I came out of the house one morning, and he threw his ball toward the fence,” she told the journalist. “I got my cane, and I reached over the fence and hit the ball toward him, and he’d throw it back. That’s how it started.”

When the weather turned, the two were unable to meet in the yard as regularly. But Benjamin’s mother, Sarah, kept the friendship alive by frequently stopping by Mary’s house with the bundled-up toddler(学步的儿童). The bond(纽带、联系) between the two has blossomed even further since Mary got vaccinated (接种疫苗). The two give each other hi-fives across the fence and often sit outside Mary’s house, blowing bubbles. This spring, Mary gifted Benjamin with a colorful toy truck collection that had once belonged to her son. The young boy returned the favor with a gift of his own a pile of dirt that he carefully carried in his small palm and dropped at her door.

Certainly, you wouldn’t guess that a 99-year-old and a 2-year-old would be friends, but they can be.

    25. What can we learn about Mary O'Neill?

    A. Mary lived alone because of the lockdown.

    B. Mary likes watching TV and playing Yahtzee most.

    C. No family members looked after Mary in the lockdown.

    D. Mary herself created a socially distanced game.

    26. What does the underlined word “ventured” mean in the third paragraph?

    A. risked B. shouted C. rushed D. escaped

    27. What can we infer from paragraph 5?

    A. Sarah was confused about the relationship.

    B. Sarah stopped Benjamin visiting Mary’s house.

    C. Sarah hoped to keep the friendship longer.

    D. Sarah was not satisfied with the unlikely friendship.

    28. What is the text mainly about?

    A. Getting vaccinated is a good way to make friends.

    B. The lockdown leads to a heart-warming friendship.

    C. A ball game benefits the development of friendship.

    D. Exchanging gifts helps people build true friendship.

To cover his terrible action, he terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily 匆忙地and put the vase back to its place.

As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks 裂纹 that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour's cat jumped in from the window and he couldn't drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned.

However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious 表示怀疑的 looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn't just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.

Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.

In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother's face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.

    读后续写:

The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Ben blushed with embarrassment as he realized what he had made up didn't hold water. “You know, all the windows were closed. ” Mother seemed to see him through but continued calmly, “Aren't you imaginative to tell me the amazing cat?” Still reluctant to give in, the boy held his head high, insisting it was the cat that broke the vase. Instead of laying bare the truth, the mother pulled him close and pressed another two chocolates into his hand, “A reward for the perfect repair. ”

    Paragraph 2

Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy's bad attitude disappeared. How he wished the ground could open up and swallow him! “Mom, I'm sorry. It was not the cat; it was me . . . ”he stammered out the truth, not daring to look his mother in the eye. “If so, I have to take back these chocolates,” the mother hardened her voice. “But your honesty deserves an award ---- a box of chocolates. ” The mother suddenly gathered the boy to her chest and spoke gently to him, “My little sweetheart, honesty values more than any antique. ”

    M: OK. Thanks a lot.

    Text 7

W: You look worried. What’s the matter?

M: It’s about the math exam, Mom.

W: The one you didn’t review for?

M: I did review. I was working on it every night last week. Don’t you remember?

W: I only remember you watching TV until eleven sometimes.

M: I need to relax after study. Anyway I didn’t pass it.

W: I told you to make a good plan for your study.

M: You are right, Mom.I didn’t manage to do that. I’m really sorry.

W: Well, you need to draw some lessons from the failure and try to perform better next time.

    Text 8

M: Hello Sarah, how are you? It’s been a long time since we last met.

W: Oh, hi Jerry. I’m glad to see you here. How often do you eat outside?

M: Four times a week. You know, cooking at home is quite difficult for me.

W: Well, actually this is my first time to eat here with my friends.By the way, I got a new job now. I have been so busy recently. How about you?

M: The same as before. So what exactly do you do now?

W: Well, I was tired of being a marketing manager, so now I choose to bea designer.

M: Sounds good. Hmm, why don’t we have a cup of coffee after lunch?

W: OK, I’ll go to your table to inform you after the meal.

    Text 9

W: So Phil, what languages do you speak?

M: ⑭⑮Well, I speak English and Japanese. But my Japanese isn’t good. Now, I live here, so I try hard to practice Japanese every day. And you, Nancy?

W: I speak English, of course. And I can also speak French and Japanese.

    M: Wow. French.

W: Yeah. I lived in Luxembourg before. I often practicedspeaking French at that time. I used to think I was fluent in French. But I can’t remember much now.

M: Do you think you’ll live in Luxembourg again someday?

W: Maybe I’ll visit there again, but I don’t think I will live there. I want to live in another French-speaking country. I think Belgium is good. What about you?

M: I’ll go back to my hometown Chicago after finishing my studies here.

W: That’s a wonderful city. I also want to visit New York and L.A.

    Text 10

M: This statue of the Sun God has the body of a lion and the face of a human being. It is five thousand years old, but it is too badly damaged to be completely saved. The statue had already been dug out of the sand three times. However, the latest problems are much more serious. Firstly, there are no proper drains(排水沟) and water pipes in the neighborhood and the water has been running into the stone statue for several years. As underground passages round the statue have become blocked, tiny pieces of salt have been left on the stone and have damaged it. Secondly, air pollution from the increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is so full of poisonous gases that it is making the stone crumble(破碎) and decay(腐烂) even faster. Thirdly, the statue is being damaged by extremes of temperature. For example, although the air is very cold at night, during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sun. Finally, the tourists who visit the statue every day also cause a lot of damage.
