Papua New Guinea is the largest develping cuntry in the Suth Pacific regin.
Its 463 000 square kilmeters f land area,a sea area f 3.12 millin square kilmeters and 600 separate islands make up ne f the mst diverse repsitries f gegraphic,bilgical,linguistic and cultural wealth n earth.
PNG has mre than 5% f the wrld's bidiversity in less than 1% f the wrld's ttal land area.
Ppulatin
Accrding t the 2000 Census,between 1980 and 2000 PNG's ppulatin grew by an annual average rate f 2.7% t 5.19 millin.
The Suthern Highlands Prvince,fllwed by Western New Britain,recrded the highest ppulatin grwth f 4.2% and 3.8% respectively.Apprximately half f PNG's ttal ppulatin is under 19 years ld.
Mst f the ppulatin lives in rural cmmunities based n the traditinal village structure and dependent n subsistence farming supplemented by cash crpping.Only 15-20% f Papua New Guineans live in the main urban areas f Prt Mresby,Lae,Madang,Mt Hagan and Grka.
Ecnmy
PNG has a relatively small dual ecnmy,cmprising a frmal and infrmal ecnmy.The frmal ecnmy is dminated by large-scale resurce prjects,particularly in mining and petrleum,and prvides a large prprtin f gvernment revenue.
The infrmal ecnmy supprts 85% f the peple thrugh semi-subsistence agriculture.The frmal sectr emplys arund 15% f the wrkfrce.
PNG has an abundance f natural resurces including:
Large reserves f minerals
Extensive frestry and fishery assets
Significant ptential fr agricultural expansin

Despite the ptential f these resurces,PNG's ecnmic perfrmance has fallen shrt f expectatins.Ecnmic grwth has nt kept up with ppulatin grwth and perfrmance varies cnsiderably frm year t year.
During 2004,PNG's ecnmy grew because f buyant cmmdity prices and gd fiscal management by gvernment.Increased freign reserves and a strengthened Kina helped inflatin and interest rates remain lw.With mderate GDP grwth,rising tax receipts and reduced gvernment brrwing csts,the PNG Gvernment's fiscal deficit is expected t remain small,despite a mdest surplus in 2004.
Hwever,with weak medium term revenue prspects,PNG needs t cnslidate and build n current ecnmic and fiscal prgress and prvide scial services and a regulatry framewrk t supprt brad based ecnmic grwth.PNG needs imprved accuntability and gvernance mechanisms,including public expenditure management and public sectr refrm,t prmte and safeguard imprved prductivity.
With mining and petrleum sectr prductin frecast t decline frm 2006,majr challenges fr the PNG Gvernment include making gd use f existing revenue,expanding the nn-mining sectr and ensuring ecnmic stability thrugh cntinued plitical and scial refrms.

PNG's ppulatin has suffered significant declines in living standards in recent years due t wrsening ecnmic perfrmance.Althugh the cuntry des nt exhibit the widespread abject pverty present in sme develping cuntries,pr health and scial indicatrs shw that pverty is a real prblem.
