    This is the first period of this unit.In this periodstudents are expected to discuss what kind of person they are.The purpose is to give students chance to practice their oral Englishat the same timethey can have a general idea about what are the qualities they should find in a great person.In this periodthere is a part designed to practice speaking and reading.In order to make students have a thorough idea of qualities great people have in commonand predict the contents of readingit is important to make good use of the six picturesespecially Nelson Mandela.Whats morethis is the first period of this unitso it is necessary to deal with the new words and expressions of this partso as to make it easy for students to begin and make them less anxious in study.

    Step 1 Greetings

    Greet the whole class as usual.

    Step 2 Lead-in

    S1I sometimes play basketball with friends.I like basketball very much.

    TThen you must know this man.Show the picture or play a short video program of Jordana famous basketball player who is a black man.

    TDo you know who he is

    S1Of course I do.He is Jordanmy idol.He is the best basketball player in the world.I have many pictures of him.

    TYesyoure quite right.He is very famous and many people all over the world worship him.But do you know that it was not until about fifty years ago that the blacks got their freedom and were treated as equal citizens

    S2Yeswe learnt about this in our history classes.The blacks were first brought to America as slaves.They were treated badly and they had no rights.

    TThats right.But we all know that things are different now.Do you know how they could have the same rights as the whites

    S3We dont know much about this.Please tell us more.

    TOK.Many people devoted themselves to this.Some were put into prison and some even lost their lives.Look at the two pictures and read the notes about them.Then have a discussion in groups of four.Try to explain why they are great men.

    Give the students a few minutes to discuss the questions.Then ask some of them to say their answers.

    TGood.Now who would like to tell us why these two men are great

    S3Let me have a try.I think Martin Luther KingJr.is great.He worked for the freedom of all the blacks.He was born in 1929.After he graduated in 1955he worked in a church and organized his first actions in the same year.Two years laterhe formed an organization for black leaders to work together.In 1963he had the famous speech I have a dream.Because of his success in his workhe received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.Unfortunately he was murdered in 1968.

    TVery good.Nowwho can tell us something about Nelson Mandela

    S4He was the first black president in South Africa from 1994 to 1999.He was born in 1918 and worked for the equal rights for the blacks of South Africa for many years.As early as in 1940while he was still at universityhe took his first actions.In 1944he helped to found the ANC Youth League.During the 1950she led many peaceful actions.His enemies hated him and he had been kept a prisoner from 1962 to 1989but he never gave up the struggle for the freedom of all the blacksso he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

    S5OK.I think struggle for the equal rights of all the blacks was an important part in the lives of them.They both achieved their goals by peaceful revolution.

    S6Things are different now in the USA.The blacks and the whites have equal rights.They can both be elected leaders of their country.

    TGood.Who has anything else to say

    S7The same is in South Africa.After Mandelathere is a second black president.No matter who breaks the law of the countryhe will be punished or put into prison.

    TNow I want you to have a look at the key words on the blackboard.Do you know the meanings of themIf notyou can check them on Pages 96-97.

    Give several minutes for them to get to know the meanings of these words.

    Step 4 Warming up

    Ask students to discuss these questions in groups of four.Five minutes latercheck with the whole class.

    Let the students to answer these questions alone.At lastcheck the answers together with the whole class.

    Step 5 Pre-reading

    TJust nowwe talked about two great menand now we will talk about five other people.William TyndaleNorman BethuneSun Yat-senGandhi and Neil Armstrong.You knowmost of the great people are also important people.But important people may not also be great people.Now please turn to Pages 33-34 and read the information about them.Discuss their lives in pairs and decide which of them are great men and which are just important men.Give your reasons for your decision.

    S11I have a try.I think Norman Bethune is a great person because he fought against the German Nazis and Japanese invaders during World War .Besideshe worked in China as a doctor and saved many Chinese soldiers.Finally he lost his life for the liberation of Chinese people.He is very unselfish.

    S12In my opinionGandhi is great.He gave up a rich life for his ideas and fought for his country to be free from the UK in a peaceful way.

    S13I dont think so.I think William Tyndale is an important person because he just did an important thingwrote the Bible in English so all could read it.I think Norman BethuneSun Yat-senGandhi are great personsbecause they devoted themselves to the liberation of mankind and they changed history while William Tyndale and Neil Armstrong are important persons because they just did an important deed in history.

    TOK.Lets read the passage Elias story.After you read the passageI think you will learn a lot from it.Now read the passage quickly and decide which of the sentences on the screen are true.

    Show the following sentences on the screen and give the students several minutes to finish the task.

    1.Elias met Nelson Mandela at school.

    2.Nelson Mandela was a black lawyer.

    3.Elias was unable to read or write because he was lazy.

    4.Nelson Mandela helped him keep his job.

    5.Elias was happy blowing up government buildings.

    Step 6 Reading and understanding

    TNowread the text again and make a timeline of Elias life until he met Nelson Mandela.Work out the year in which he was born and then fit in the other event in his life till he was fourteen.

    Students practise for a few minutes and the teacher may join in their discussion and help them.Finally ask some students to answer them one by one.

    Mandelas statements in court during the trials are classics in the history of the resistance to apartheidand they have been an inspiration to all who have opposed it.His statement from the dock in the Rivonia Trial ends with these words

    I have fought against white dominationand I have fought against black domination.I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities.It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve.But if needs beit is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.Mandela was sentenced to life imprisonment.He started his prison years in the notorious Robben Island Prisona maximum security prison on a small island 7 km off the coast near Cape Town.

    Mandela rejected an offer of release on condition that he renounce violence.Prisoners cannot enter into contracts.Only free men can negotiatehe said.In April 1984 he was transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town.1988 he was moved the Victor Verster Prison.Released on 11 February 1990Mandela plunged wholeheartedly into his lifes work.Striving to attain the goals he and others had set out almost four decades earlier.In 1991at the first national conference of the ANC held inside South AfricaNelson Mandela was elected President of the ANC.His lifelong friend and colleagueOliver Tambobecame the organisations National Chairperson.Despite terrible provocationhe has never answered racism with racism.His life has been an inspirationin South Africa and throughout the world.To all who are oppressed and deprivedand to all who are opposed to oppression and deprivation.In a life that symbolises the triumph of the human spirit over mans inhumanity to manNelson Mandela accepted the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.He accepted the award on behalf of all South Africans who suffered and sacrificed so muchto bring peace to our land.
