    The teaching materials f this perid cntain three parts.The first part is the reading passage n Page 30 with the title f “What Can We D Abut Glbal Warming?”.It cnsists f tw letters:a request frm a student fr help n a schl prject and the reply.The letters bring students' attentin t a cmmnly held belief that individuals are pwerless t d anything abut envirnmental prblems and that it is gvernments that are in a psitin t act and have the respnsibility t act.Earth Care's letter suggests ways t save energy and therefre decrease the amunt f carbn dixide that is pured int the atmsphere.
    The secnd part is Exercise 2 n Page 31,which asks the students t make a pster fr their schl that tells students varius ways they can reduce the amunt f carbn dixide in the air.
    The third part is a writing task designed by the teacher,which asks students t write a shrt passage abut glbal warming.By practicing writing the passage,students can strengthen their knwledge abut glbal warming and develp their sense f envirnmental prtectin.

    Check the hmewrk f the last perid.
    Step 2 Lead-in
    Shw the students the fllwing pictures n the slide and ask students the fllwing questins:

    3.What have yu learnt frm the film?
    And then ask them:What causes the glbal warming?Lead them t tell the cause:gas emissin.At the same time shw the fllwing pictures:
    After talking abut the causes f gas emissin,ask students the questin “What is the effect f glbal warming?”.Help them answer:natural disasters(fld,drught,hurricane,tsunami and trnad),spread f diseases,sea level rising,decrease f species and s n.
    At last,ask the questin:“What can we d abut glbal warming?” And then lead in the reading text.

    1.Skim the first letter,and answer the questins belw:

    Glbal Warming Slutins—What Can We D?
    The evidence that humans are causing glbal warming is strng,but the questin f what t d abut it remains cntrversial.Ecnmics,scilgy,and plitics are all imprtant factrs in planning fr the future.
    Even if we stpped emitting greenhuse gases(GHGs)tday,the Earth wuld still warm by anther degree Fahrenheit r s.But what we d frm tday frward makes a big difference.Depending n ur chices,scientists predict that the Earth culd eventually warm by as little as 2.5 degrees r as much as 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
    A cmmnly cited gal is t stabilize GHG cncentratins arund 450-550 parts per millin(ppm),r abut twice pre-industrial levels.This is the pint at which many believe the mst damaging impacts f climate change can be avided.Current cncentratins are abut 380 ppm,which means there isn't much time t lse.Accrding t the IPCC,we'd have t reduce GHG emissins by 50% t 80% f what they're n track t be in the next century t reach this level.

    Many peple and gvernments are already wrking hard t cut greenhuse gases,and everyne can help.
    Researchers Stephen Pacala and Rbert Sclw at Princetn University have suggested ne apprach that they call “stabilizatin wedges”.This means reducing GHG emissins frm a variety f surces with technlgies available in the next few decades,rather than relying n an enrmus change in a single area.They suggest 7 wedges that culd each reduce emissins,and all f them tgether culd hld emissins at apprximately current levels fr the next 50 years,putting us n a ptential path t stabilize arund 500 ppm.
    There are many pssible wedges,including imprvements t energy efficiency and vehicle fuel ecnmy(s less energy has t be prduced),and increases in wind and slar pwer,hydrgen prduced frm renewable surces,bifuels(fuels prduced frm crps),natural gas,and nuclear pwer.There is als the ptential t capture the carbn dixide emitted frm fssil fuels and stre it undergrund—a prcess called “carbn sequestratin”.
    In additin t reducing the gases we emit t the atmsphere,we can als increase the amunt f gases we take ut f the atmsphere.Plants and trees absrb CO2 as they grw,“sequestering” carbn naturally.Increasing frestlands and making changes t the way we farm culd increase the amunt f carbn we're string.
    Sme f these technlgies have drawbacks,and different cmmunities will make different decisins abut hw t pwer their lives,but the gd news is that there are a variety f ptins t put us n a path tward a stable climate.
