Many studies link music study to academic achievements. But what is it about serious music training that seems to associate with great success in other fields?
I put the question to topflight professionals in industries from tech to finance to media, all of whom had serious (if often littleknown) past lives as musicians. Alan.Greenspan, former chairman of the Federal Reserve, was a professional saxophone (萨克斯管) player. The billionaire Bruce Kovner is a pianist who took classes at Juilliard. Almost all made a connection between their music training and their professional achievements. Mr. Greenspan says, “I can tell you as a statistician, the probability that that is mere chance is extremely small. That's all that you can judge about the facts. The important question is: why does that connection exist?”
Paul Allen, the billionaire cofounder of Microsoft, offers an answer. He says music “builds up your confidence in the ability to create”. The music had the emotional(情感的) similarity to his day job, with each giving a different type of motivation. The NBC chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd, who attended college on music scholarships, says there is a connection, between years of practice and competition and what he calls the “drive for perfection”. He adds: “The group playing trains you, quite literally, to play well with others, to know when to solo (独奏) and when to follow. ”
For many of the high achievers I spoke with, music functions as a “hidden language”, as the former World Bank president James Wolfensohn calls it, one that improves the ability to connect diverse or even contradictory ideas. According to him, music may not make you a genius, or a better person. But it helps train you to think differently, to process different points of view — and most importantly, to take pleasure in listening.

Pete Sparks was a sensitive (敏感的) boy. So sensitive that even his hair was ticklish (怕痒的). You only had to touch his hair a little bit and he would start laughing. When this ticklish laughter started, no one could make him stop.
Pete tried everything to control his ticklishness, but nothing worked. So he began to feel sad for being different.
One day in the street, he met a special clown. The clown was very old and could hardly walk, but when he saw Pete in tears, he went to cheer him up. It didn't take long to make Pete laugh. Later Pete told him about his ticklish problem, and he asked the clown how such an old man could carry on being a clown.
“I have no one to take my place,” said the clown. “I have a very serious job to do.” Pete looked at him, surprised. “Come, I'll show you,” said the clown. So the clown took Pete to many hospitals full of children who were sick. As soon as they saw the clown, their faces changed completely and lit up with a smile. Their short while spent with the clown changed everything for them. That day was even more special, because in every show Pete's laughter would end up with the kids lying on the floor, dying with laughter. When the visit came to an end, the old clown said to Pete, “Now do you see why I can't retire (退休), even at my age?”
That was how Pete became a clown, and took the special old man's place. From that day on, the fact that Pete was different actually made him happy, thanks to his special gift (天赋).

Are you feeling anxious about your test next week? Here are some tips that will help you in dealing with stress and anxiety.
Study regularly
One of the most important ways of avoiding test anxiety is to prepare well in advance. Study regularly for a few hours every day. 1
Reduce study pressure
If students are not able to deal with anxiety or nervousness, they could talk to their teachers, student counselors (辅导员), parents or friends. Parents should also avoid pressurizing (加压) their kids to do well. 2 Then your children can study without any tension (紧张). Another important point that arises here is neither the students nor the parents should compare the children with their other classmates and friends.
Physical fitness
Do not forget to eat and sleep properly. Many times due to anxiety students avoid sleep and starve themselves. 3 Exercising regularly is equally important as talking to friends and socializing (社交).
4
Plan your studies well. Chart (制图) out a timetable and take proper breaks between studying. Along with the study time, allot (分配) time to relax and do what you love to do. Practicing simple breathing skills will also help reduce stress.
5 While it is important to gain good scores in tests, it is not the most important thing in life. Learning to deal with nervousness and stress will not only help them to do well in school tests, but also in their future life.
A.Listen carefully in class
B.Prepare schedule
C.Create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere at home.
D.It helps in increasing the confidence of students.
