John Constable was born in Suffolk, England, on 11 June, 1776. His family hoped that he would join his father's business, but he showed great interest in art when he was very young. Finally, his family allowed him to enter the Royal Academy of Arts, a very famous art college in England, at the age of twenty-three.
At the Royal Academy of Arts, he was a good student, spending all his spare time drawing and reading.
He showed his first painting in 1802. Constable believed the greatest art came from using the inspiration of nature, rather than using various techniques and imagination on art.
In his lifetime, Constable never had much money. His fame only grew after his death. He was unable to earn a living from the paintings. To support his family, Constable often drew portraits of others. But it was something he never really enjoyed. He was attracted by the beauty of the British countryside.
He sold more paintings in France than in his home country, England, at first. But when given the chance to travel to sell his paintings abroad, he said he would rather “be a poor man in England than a rich man abroad”.

The majority of us have read Cinderella, the fairy tale of a young woman living in poverty who meets the prince of her dreams. Some might not want to admit it, but there is a hidden Cinderella in everyone's heart—we all wish we could achieve recognition or success after a period of obscurity Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too. Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story, a film set in a US high school.
Mary is shy but loves to dance. Compared with other girls, she is invisible. However, her world changes completely when a famous teenage pop singer, Joey Parker, appears. Joey is everything the rest of the boys in her class are not—kind, handsome and desirable. Mary's and Joey's paths cross at a ball. They meet and fall in love with each other. But when Mary has to rush back home, she leaves behind her MP3 player, which becomes the only clue Joey has to find the girl of his dreams. Of course, there is a wicked stepmother, who turns out to be Dominique Blatt and she takes in Mary after her dancer mother dies. Dominique treats Mary like a maid and does everything she can to make sure Mary doesn't get into the top dance school. Her two daughters are equally determined to stop Joey falling for Mary, even if that means embarrassing her.
The story, though it mostly follows Cinderella, does add a few modern-day twists to the classic fairy tale. Refreshingly, the film, unlike many high school films, does not focus on looks, although the actors are all beautiful. There is also a lot less materialism in Another Cinderella Story than in many similar movies.
“The movie takes the Cinderella fairy tale as its jumping-off point,” writes Amber Wilkinson, a movie critic. “The focus is firmly on following your dreams.”
8.What's the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To inform us of the background of Cinderella.
B.To remind us why Cinderella is popular all the years.
C.To build interest and lead us to Mary's secret dream.
D.To tell us how interesting the fairy tale Cinderella is.
9.What can we infer from the text?
A.Joey is just like other boys in Mary's class.
B.The MP3 player helps Joey to find Mary.
C.Not many people have a dream to realize.
D.Mary's mother influences her a lot in singing.
10.What does Amber Wilkinson think of Another Cinderella Story?
A.The movie is as good as Cinderella.
B.The movie is exactly another copy of Cinderella.
C.The movie and Cinderella both focus on following your dreams.
D.The movie is based on Cinderella but a little different from it.
11.What is the text mainly about?
    A.A review of a film.
    B.An introduction to a book.
    C.An essay about dreams.
    D.An advertisement for Cinderella.

Poetry is one of mankind's oldest art forms. Since first analyzed by Aristotle, poetry has been part of every major art movement, and some say it captures emotion better than any other forms. Reading poetry is necessary to gain a full understanding of the world and has many additional benefits.
The immediate benefits of reading poetry are improvements on vocabulary. Poetry makes the reader familiar with new terms and encourages verbal analysis. This presents reading as a creative act in its own right. The common practice of memorizing poems also improves long-term brain health. Studies have shown that people who memorize and recall poems are less susceptible (易受影响) to Alzheimer's.
Poetry also improves critical thinking by forcing a reader to think. In great poetry, meaning is not obvious or one-dimensional (一维的). Understanding poetry is an active practice, rather than the passive engagement with prose (散文). Readers of poetry are more likely than nonreaders to analyze information for viewpoints. This skill benefits students, and anyone who wants to form their own opinions of news items or gain a better perspective on documents like contracts. The critical thinking skills developed through reading poetry give language itself greater control.
The most remarkable power of literature is its ability to unite readers and writers across time and cultural boundaries. As condensed (浓缩的) literature, poetry offers these benefits in a powerful way. Poetry triggers memories and emotions in its readers. This connection between universal emotions and personal experience encourages the development of empathy(共鸣). A reader might have no practical conception of what life was like during the Elizabethan era in England. However, Shakespeare's sonnets with their universal themes of love and longing, can bridge the gap of centuries and help us gain an insight into people's feelings in the 17th century.
12.Which of the following shows the benefit memorizing poetry brings to the brain?
    A.It improves people's long-term memory.
B.It improves one's ability to analyse issues.
C.It makes one less likely to catch Alzheimer's.
D.It makes one act more creatively.
13.In what way does poetry improve critical thinking?
A.Readers have to analyze information to form viewpoints.
B.Readers must understand the obvious meaning of poetry.
C.Readers have to gain a better perspective upon documents.
D.Readers have to have good control over language.
14.Why does the author mention Shakespeare's sonnets?
A.To show poetry motivates us to learn different cultures.
B.To show poetry helps develop our empathy.
C.To show the universal themes of poetry.
D.To show Shakespeare's understanding of life.
15.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To ask us to read poems.
B.To show how to appreciate poems.
C.To tell the importance of poetry in history.
D.To explain the benefits of reading poetry.

Do you have difficulty falling asleep at night? If so, here is a piece of advice for you:listen to some soft music.

South Korean artist Young-Sung Kim has a very special talent—he can paint photographs. The old saying “I'll believe it when I see it” doesn't really apply to Kim's art. It was the day of the poetry festival, and I was 36 (excite). At my old school, I had won the poetry ribbon every year. I did write good poetry. When Mrs. Baker called me, I stood up. I didn't even bother to look at my paper. I'd spent so much time 37 (perfect) the rhymes, and counting the 38 (beat) that I knew the poem by heart. I had just started the third verse when I noticed Mrs. Baker was glaring at me. “Linda, you 39 (suppose) to be reading an original work, a poem you made up yourself, not reciting something you learned.” I opened my mouth to explain, but no words came out. “You will leave the room and will not return until you are ready 40 (apologize),” said Mrs. Baker. “Now, go!” I turned and left the room. I'd been standing outside for about half an hour when Joseph, another school teacher, came over to ask me why. As Joseph waited 41 me to answer, he looked so kind and sympathetic 42 I poured out the whole story, trying not to cry. “Linda, accepting defeat when you should stand up for 43 (you) can become a very dangerous habit. You know you are the only Linda Brown in the whole world.” 44 (he)eyes smiling into mine, I took a deep breath and 45 (knock) on the classroom door, ready to face Mrs. Baker—recite my poem.

Look inside any family home in the evening, and you might see a scene that is typical enough: Mom and Dad, each on their own laptop or tablet, streaming movies, catching up on work or maybe answering emails on their smartphones. Meanwhile, one child is chatting online with one school friend while texting another. The other is playing a video game with a friend on the other side of the city at the same time. Each member of the family is totally absorbed in his or her own piece of technology.
According to some experts, the effect of technology on human relationships is worrying as technology becomes a substitute for face-to-face human relationships. It appears to be the case that many people would much rather spend time with their electronic gadgets (电子产品) than with one another. Young people say it is difficult to get their parents' attention and they have to compete with smartphones, tablets and other technology.
However, a report from the Pew Internet and American Life Project offers a more helpful and encouraging view, suggesting that far from replacing human contact, technology can actually better family relationships. Just over half of the 2,253 people surveyed agreed that technology had enabled them to increase their contact with distant family members and 47 percent said it had improved the communication with the people they lived with. Moreover, even the closest members of families need time away from each other at some point to seek their own interests. Family members who might otherwise have sat in separate rooms can now be in the same one while still occupying a different mental space.
Look back at our typical family scene above. Is it any different from four people reading their own books? Or is it driving families apart?Where technology will lead us remains to be seen. Yet there is no need to worry. As a matter of fact, how it affects our family relationships depends on our attitude toward technology.

根据The Hunger Games中的Based on a book by Suzanne Collins, the story is set in Panem, a destroyed country in North America.
    【高频词汇】 1.cope with处理,应付 2.be based on根据;以……为基础 3.be set in以……为背景 4.take part in参加
    5.competition n. 开始 7.in spite of尽管;不顾 8.disconnect sb. from...

His family hoped...when he was very young. 故选A。
His fame only grew after his death.(他死后才出名)可知,D项不正确。
He sold more paintings in France than in his home country, England, at first. Constable believed...techniques and imagination on art.(Constable认为,最伟大的艺术来自运用自然的灵感,而不是在艺术上运用各种技巧和想象力。) To support his family...really enjoyed.(为了养家糊口,Constable经常给别人画肖像,但这是他从来没有真正喜欢过的事情。) He was unable to earn a living from the paintings.(他无法靠这些画谋生。)
    【高频词汇】 1.show interest in对…… 吸引 6.be tired of对……

原句 But when given the chance to travel to sell his paintings abroad, he said he would rather “be a poor man in England than a rich man abroad.”
when given the chance to travel to sell his paintings abroad是when引导的时间状语从句when he was given...的省略;he would rather “be a poor man in England than a rich man abroad.”是省略引导词that的宾语从句, would rather...than...

Some might not want to admit it...Mary Santiago has that secret dream, too.
But when Mary has to rush back home...his dreams. Joey is everything the rest of the boys in her class are not—kind, handsome and desirable. Some might not want to admit it...a period of obscurity(默默无闻).
根据最后一段引述Amber Wilkinson的原话“The movie takes the Cinderella fairy tale as its jumping-off point”以及“The focus is firmly on following your dreams.”
Her story is featured in Another Cinderella Story, a film set in a US high school. 故选A项。
比较 5.fall in love with 爱上…… 6.turn out v.

Studies have shown that people who memorize and recall poems are less susceptible(易受影响) to Alzheimer's.
Poetry also improves critical thinking by forcing a reader to think.和Readers of poetry are more likely than nonreaders to analyze information for viewpoints. 故选A项。
However, Shakespeare's sonnets...in the 17th century.
故选A项。
1.have difficulty (in) doing sth.
3.have something to do with...

If you are not sure how many beats a song has in a minute, you can find out by entering its title into songbpm. com.
If you are not sure how many beats a song has in a minute是If引导的条件状语从句;该从句也是主从复合句,其中how many beats a song has in a minute是how many引导的宾语从句。
由下文he is highly 32 as one of the world's realistic painters中的realistic可知,他是一名写实画家。
unless除非;though尽管;because因为;when当……
be interested in对……感兴趣;be troubled by受到……打扰;be afraid of害怕;be careful with对…… 故选A。
Most of Kim's paintings show small animals可 知,他以动物为绘画对象。
由that only made him want to become a better painter可知,小时候的他画画的水平不及现在,选择below合乎语境。故选A。
故选A。
故选A。
give in让步;get away离开,逃脱;help out帮助…… 由空后的allowed him to follow his dream可知,他的父母做出了“让步”。故选A。
Not only does Kim get to earn a living...earning between $10,000 and $130,000 per artwork.
be regarded as被认为是,由earning between $10,000 and $130,000 per artwork可知,他作为写实画家得到了很高的认可。
even即使;seldom很少;yet还;just只是。 故选A。
由后文的get as close to that 100-point mark as possible可知,他想让自己的作品达到满分,因此他并不满足于现在的水平,be happy with意为“对……
none没有;some一些;many许多;all全部。 故选A。
天赋;才能 2.apply to适用于; 运用于 3.stare at凝视 4.tell...from...
spend time doing sth.
由语境可知此处为老师说的话,用一般现在时,be supposed to do sth.
be ready to do sth.
wait for sb. to do sth.
此处为“so...that...”
同情的;有同情心的 4.pour out倾诉 5.stand up for支持;维护
