In July, China introduced the “double reduction(双减)”policy. It hopes to reduce students’ learning burden by reducing homework and after-school classes. How do students feel about this new policy?
“Our homework is clearly less than before,” said 13-year-old Shen Yuzhe from Beijing. “We are not encouraged to buy workbooks anymore. The exercises are mainly from the textbook.” According to Shen, teachers now teach more slowly. Students have enough time to process new knowledge. “Our teachers are also giving us more chances to learn from real life,” said Shen. “For example, we went to research earthworms in a field during a biology class. This is a much better way to learn things than just reading the textbooks.”
For 13-year-old Zhang Huangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. We can now spend more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama. I have joined a group called ‘leadership development’ where I can learn all kinds of skills beyond academic(学业的) study,”said Zhang.
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “Exams push me to study harder. At 8,844,43 meters high, Qomolangma is the tallest mountain on earth. While it is famous for its beautiful views, parts of the mountains are facing the problem: Rubbish. Every year, thousands of visitors throw away tons of rubbish, such as bottles and plastic bags.
According to the UN, over 140 tons of rubbish has been left on the mountain. To reduce rubbish, China is limiting the number of people who are allowed to climb up the north side of the mountain.
About 300 people will be allowed to climb it, and only during spring.
Local people cleaned the mountain last year, removing rubbish at the height of 5,200 meters. They collected about 8.4 metirc tons (公吨) of rubbish.

In Chinese, the phrase “dao mei” is often used to describe bad luck. Where did “dao mei” come from?
It is said that dao mei comes from the dialect(方言) of Zhejiang region during the Ming Dynasty. It has something to do with the ke ju testig system, or the imperial(皇家的) examinations that were given in ancient China.
At the time, there were no entrance examinations for colleges and universities like today. If someone wanted to become a civil servant(文职官员), that person would need to take the ke ju tests. The ke ju testing system consisted of several tests at different levels. Through the highest-level tests, called dian shi, the best candidates(候选人) were selected by the emperor.
The ke ju tests were hard and competition was fierce. During the Ming Dynasty, candidates in the Zhejiang region would put up a flagpole(旗杆) in front of the gate to their home, wishing for good luck on the tests. Local people called the flagpole “mei”(楣) at the time. If someone passed a test, the flagpole would be kept up. If they failed, the flagpole would be removed, which was called “dao mei”, meaning “the flagpole falls”.
As time passed, dao mei came to refer not only to “failing the test”, but also to describe being unlucky in general. The Chinese character for mei was also changed from “楣” to today’s 霉”, since the two have the same pronunciation.

At 8,844,43 meters high, Qomolangma is the tallest mountain on earth. While it is famous for its beautiful views, parts of the mountains are facing the problem: Rubbish. Every year, thousands of visitors throw away tons of rubbish, such as bottles and plastic bags.

In Chinese, the phrase “dao mei” is often used to describe bad luck. Where did “dao mei” come from?
It is said that dao mei comes from the dialect(方言) of Zhejiang region during the Ming Dynasty. It has something to do with the ke ju testig system, or the imperial(皇家的) examinations that were given in ancient China.
At the time, there were no entrance examinations for colleges and universities like today. If someone wanted to become a civil servant(文职官员), that person would need to take the ke ju tests. The ke ju testing system consisted of several tests at different levels. Through the highest-level tests, called dian shi, the best candidates(候选人) were selected by the emperor.
The ke ju tests were hard and competition was fierce. During the Ming Dynasty, candidates in the Zhejiang region would put up a flagpole(旗杆) in front of the gate to their home, wishing for good luck on the tests. Local people called the flagpole “mei”(楣) at the time. If someone passed a test, the flagpole would be kept up. If they failed, the flagpole would be removed, which was called “dao mei”, meaning “the flagpole falls”.
As time passed, dao mei came to refer not only to “failing the test”, but also to describe being unlucky in general. The Chinese character for mei was also changed from “楣” to today’s 霉”, since the two have the same pronunciation.
