Stay on top of your assignments
As college students, we often have a lot of assignments to attend to. Reading, essays and problem sets can pile up very quickly! Balancing your university work can be tricky. It’s easy to fall behind, but you don’t have to. In this article, we will discuss how to stay on top of your assignments.
Pay attention to the syllabus
The best way to stay on top of your assignments is to be aware of what’s going on in class. You can do this by checking your class syllabus often. Write down all the due dates in your planner so you don’t forget them.
Set aside time to read and work on your assignments
Another way to ensure you stay on top of your assignments is to set aside time to do them. When you schedule time, you can also intentionally choose the time when you work best.
Set goals
You should also set goals for yourself. Start with some simple goals. Dedicate a certain amount of time to an assignment and make sure to finish it on predetermined day.
Pace yourself
Although it’s important to get all your work done, you also don’t want to burn yourself out. For this reason, you should pace yourself and plan to complete the assignment over the course of a few days.
Ask for help if you need it
Ask someone for help when you’re stuck. The best person you could ask would be your professor. When you ask for help, you will have no excuse to procrastinate (拖延) on that difficult assignment.

It had been a long, hard, wonderful day. The two of us had walked from the sea’s edge through the length of a beautiful valley, climbed a superb mountain, travelled its narrow, rocky ridge (山脊), and now stood on its final peak (顶点), tired, happy and looking for the perfect campsite.
The experienced backpacker has a natural feeling for such things, and our eyes were drawn to a small blue circle on the map. We could not see it from where we were, but we followed our judgement and went down steeply until it came into view.
We were right. It was a calm pool, with flat grass beside it. Gently taking our packs off, we made the first of many cups of tea before putting up our tent. Later that evening, over another cup of tea and after a good meal, we sat outside the tent watching the sun set over a sea dotted with islands, towards one of which a ferry was slowly moving. It is not always so perfect, of course. On another trip, with a different companion, a thoroughly wet day had ended at a lonely farm. Depressed at the thought of camping, we had knocked and asked if we could use a barn (谷仓) as a shelter.
Backpacking could be defined as the art of comfortable, self-sufficient (自给自足的) travel on foot. Everything you need is in the pack on your back, and you become emotionally as well as physically attached to it. I once left my pack hidden in some rocks while I made a long trip to a peak I particularly wanted to climb. I was away for nearly three hours and ended up running the last stretch in fear that my precious pack would not be there. It was, of course.
The speed at which the backpacker travels makes this the perfect way to see any country. You experience the landscape as a slow unfolding scene, almost in the way it was made; and you find time to stop and talk to people you meet. I’ve learned much local history from simply chatting to people I met while walking through an area. At the end of a trip, whether three days or three weeks, there’s a feeling of achievement, of having got somewhere under your own power.
41. The author and his companion knew there was a pool because_______.
A. they had been told about it
B. they could see it on the map
C. they had seen it earlier in the day
D. they could see it from the top of the mountain
42. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The map. B. The mountain. C. The pool. D. Rocky ridge.
43. How did the author and his companion feel at the end of the day?
A. They were too tired to put up their tent.
B. They wished they could have found a farm.
C. They were anxious about the coming weather.
D. They were delighted with the spot they had found.
44. What does the author mean by being “emotionally as well as physically attached to” his backpack in Paragraph 4?
A. It is more than just a practical aid.
B. He walks better when he is wearing it.
C. It is not a good idea to leave it anywhere.
D. He might die on the mountains without it.
45. According to the author, the main advantage of backpacking is that you can_______.
A. get fitter as you walk
B. make new friends while walking
C. find out how the landscape was made
D. gain an understanding of the area you walk through
C
“Hi, howareya,” some people say when they see a familiar face. The words run together into a mass, all sense and meaning lost. All the same, people do care how you are. After they greet you, it’s likely you will greet them back, with an equally meaningless phrase like, “Can’t complain, can’t complain.” You could probably complain, at length, or share a brilliant thought you were just beginning when a greeting interrupted you. You don’t though, you say, “Great, you?”
You are not giving each other information about your health and well-being. All the same, you are sharing information. You’re acknowledging each other’s positions as acknowledged friends, or at least as accepted acquaintances. And you are reestablishing the ties that may have lapsed (偏离) since yesterday.
It’s what anthropologist (人类学家) Bronislaw Malinoski called a phatic (交流感情的) communication. Its message is not in the words you use, but in the fact that you speak ritually (仪式上地) accepted words. In Asia, for example, people may ask one another if they have eaten, or if they are busy. They’re not really asking for their lunch menu or their agenda, they are saying hello. A phatic signal says hi.
There’s embarrassment of being near people without acknowledging them. That uncomfortable feeling is one reason why lonely passengers in the subway may behave as if they cannot see anyone around them or may escape their uncomfortable situation with a book. Some people read all the way home, and never turn a page.
Your friend isn’t asking how you are, and you aren’t telling him. However, he is recognizing your existence, and when you answer, you are recognizing his. In addition, the set speech you have shared opens the door to closer communications if both agree. Someday, you may come to real close friendship, and really tell one another how you are.
Meanwhile, people who greet one another this way do care. They care enough to recognize someone’s essential humanity. They send a signal across the space between, to share, very briefly and lightly, in awareness of one another.
Your greetings prove that neither of you has become a social outcast. How are you? You are still a member of society in good status. You are still the one who knows the rituals necessary to get to work each day.
46. When people greet, they_______.
A. want to show their different educational backgrounds
B. rarely show something related to the words themselves
C. want to know other people’s privacy
D. often complain about the bad weather
47. According to Bronislaw Malinoski, a phatic communication_______.
A. is rarely used by Asian people
B. is too complex to be used often
C. helps establish or keep certain relationships
D. often ruins the normal relationships between friends
48. Some people seldom greet strangers because _______.
A. they want to be polite to others B. they feel uncomfortable to do it
C. they don’t know when to greet them D. they want to do something meaningful
49. The underlined word “outcast” in the last paragraph probably means_______.
A. a person who is well-educated B. a person who succeeds suddenly
C. a person who is a burden to society D. a person who is not accepted by others
50. What does the text mainly tell us?
A. Greetings should be better expressed.
B. Greetings convey different meanings to different people.
C. Greetings help prove an individual’s social independence.
D. Greetings help an individual be connected with the society.
D
In 2012, James Cameron, creator of Avatar and Titanic, became the first person to reach the Challenger Deep. When he arrived at the deepest spot on Earth at 7 miles below sea level, he spent hours mapping the region and taking photos and samples.
“As human beings, we ’ re drawn to absolutes — the deepest, the highest, the coldest, the farthest,” he says. “And as a storyteller and curious monkey, I just wanted to see what was there.” The answer is obvious — plastic and more. “Our so-called civilization is using the ocean as its toilet,” Cameron says. “Unless this changes, ocean ecosystems are going to continue their rapid collapse.”
Despite decades of environmental studies, the impact of plastic and other forms of pollution on oceans are not entirely understood. Initial studies appear to indicate that ingesting(摄取) them — either directly or indirectly — could cause disease. Plastics can also release poisonous substances into the water, which could potentially impact animal populations.
But plastic is just one of the problems facing oceans that have yet to be fully understood. “Plastic waste in the ocean is horrifying but is only the most obvious of our many deadly waste streams, which include carbon that ’ s heating the atmosphere and making the ocean acidic(酸性的), and the run-off nutrients from all the world’ s agriculture, which is causing anoxic(缺氧的) dead zones the size of countries,” Cameron says.
Oceans, like the rest of the world, are impacted by the burning of fossil fuels and the release of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide — about 30 percent of which is absorbed by the sea. This absorption causes ocean acidification(酸化), where the PH level is altered to become more acidic. As a result, it’ s harder for some creatures to form shells and skeletons and countless species at the base of the food web can struggle to survive, which, scientists say, has the potential to cause huge disruptions to entire ecosystems. Indeed, ocean acidification is thought to have played an important role in Earth’s worst-ever mass extinction event 252 million years ago.
The effect of climate change on the world’s oceans will likely worsen in coming decades. Last June, scientists announced carbon dioxide levels had reached the highest levels since human records began. The last time carbon dioxide levels were this high was during the Pliocene era, between 3 and 5 million years ago, when global temperatures were about 4 degrees Celsius warmer than they are today. Current climate models suggest that if greenhouse gas emissions continue on their current trend, we may be on course to see 4 degrees of warming by 2100.
As a result, understanding the role oceans have on global systems is becoming more and more important.
51. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A. The author’s feelings to the ocean. B. Cameron’s movies and remarks.
C. The author’s discoveries under the sea. D. Cameron’s observation and concern.
52. According to the passage, which of the followings is not the problem for the oceans?
A. Poisonous streams. B. Run-off nutrients.
C. Plastic waste. D. Carbon.
53. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Several countries are suffering from anoxic dead zones.
B. More concern should have been given to the pollution on oceans.
C. Plastic is supposed to be the most serious environmental problem.
D. Ocean acidification removes the nutrients from agricultural products.
54. What does the underlined word “disruptions” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Decreases. B. Destruction. C. Diseases. D. Discrimination.
55. Why does the author mention the mass extinction event 252 million years ago?
A. To call on people to protect sea animals.
B. To compare current situations with the past.
C. To explain how serious the ocean problem is.
D. To prove pollution to be the cause of acidification.
第II卷(非选择题 共35分)
第二部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
Until last January, I was very much a prose(散文) writer. I loved to write short stories but couldn’t stand poetry because it seemed like a lazy version. But then I entered a local poetry competition and won a prize. I read my poem at the award ceremony, and received a positive reaction from the audience. It was then that I realized poetry was much more interesting and diverse than I had previously thought, and that maybe I wasn’t too bad at writing it.
Since February, I have been trying to write poetry as often as possible, and it proves that somehow I like it now. Poetry isn’t a lazier version of prose, but it can be an easier one. This is because there are fewer rules in poetry and it is far more personal. What makes it so interesting is that it is told through the poet’s style.
This is what makes writing poetry such a good method of calming yourself down. Writing about worries, stresses and insecurities can really help you to make sense of how you feel about them, and to create something valuable from a bad situation. It also helps poems to catch on quickly. People love to hear personal stories about troubles they also struggle with.
Not only is poetry a fantastic form of therapy (治疗), but it can also earn you respect and sometimes even a career. As more and more poetry competitions for young people are set up, it is easier than ever to get recognized. As well as competitions, there are events such as poetry salons where you can share poems with others. Social media can also be a good platform for poetry.
So why not give it a try? Write about whatever is in your mind, and don’t worry about following any rules. Let yourself be inspired and inspire someone else.
56. How did the author feel about poetry in the past? (no more than 10 words)
57. What’s the turning point for the author’s starting writing poems? (no more than 10 words)
58. In the author’s opinion, what is the difference between poetry and prose?(no more than 10 words)
59. How do you understand the underlined part in Paragraph 3? (no more than 10 words)
60. What can you learn from the author’s experience? (no more than 20 words)
