第四部分
第一节
One possible version:
Good afternoon! I’m Li Hua. Thanks for your offer. I feel greatly honored to talk about myself here.
I have always been meaning to be a person useful for our nation and the society. It’ s because I have grown up to be healthy and happy due to my family’s great care and love as well as the devotion of our government and the teachers. All this also accounts for why I choose Xiamen University, where I can major in Environmental Engineering. Another reason is my constant concern about the environmental protection and the improvement of people’s living conditions.
I definitely hope I will be lucky enough to be admitted and I know I will try hard to shape myself into what I want to be.

第二节
One possible version:
Lisa “lost” an event for the first time in her track career. She finished the fourth in the race, which went out of everyone’s expectation. The two athletes on the other team, who had been running all the year, beat Julie. Julie ended in the third place, just as Lisa expected. “Congratulations, Julie!” Julie was surrounded with flowers and applauses. She was grinning from ear to ear. “I made it!” she repeated. It was her first time to have won so good an achievement and she eventually earned the favorable letter. Seeing the beaming face of Julie, Lisa walked away silently with a faint smile and came in my direction.
I wondered at her facial expressions when she approached me. “What happened?” I asked.“Nothing.” She let out a sigh of relief. The reason was self-evident. She “lost” the game for the good of Julie. She told me it was the only chance for Julie to win the third. “It is between you and me,” begged Lisa, politely and firmly. She promised that she would try her best to go all out for her team and never would she let me down again. Though I didn’t allow such a trick happen around, inside my mind, she earned my respect and admiration as the role model thinking of others before himself or herself.

听力原文:
Text 1
M: I really like your coat. Did you just buy it at the sale?
W: No, I got this for my last birthday. (1) I did pick up these gloves and a hat, though. Did you buy anything?
Text 2
M: How do you feel about the exam? Did you study enough?
W: I guess so. I reviewed the information thoroughly. Do you have a pencil I could borrow? There’s only a pen in my bag. (2)
M: Sorry, but I’m sure the teacher can help you.
Text 3
M: Make sure to clean the needle before using it. If we get the samples dirty, we’ll have to throw them out and start the experiment again.
W: Of course. That’s literally the first thing they taught us at school. (3)
Text 4
W: The most important lesson I learned in life is to turn the other page — not to focus too much on what happened in the past.
M: That’s true. It’s obvious that those who are absorbed by their history are not happy overall. (4)
Text 5
W: When can you drop off your computer at my house? I need to finish the project this weekend.
M: How about Wednesday? Tomorrow is Tuesday, and my schedule is packed until tomorrow evening.
W: Could you leave the door unlocked later today? I’ll come by to pick it up. (5)
Text 6
W: Becoming a short-distance runner is not about how fast you run, but how far you run. It’s all about how many meters every week you run. You must put in more practice and training than your competitors.
M: I run 10 laps every day. Don’t you think 1000 meters is enough? (6)
W: Not even close. An Olympic runner trains by running at least five times that much. They train a lot! (6)
M: But I’ll have no time for school or to play with my friends if I do that. (7)
W: That’s why I’m not asking you to. But, I do want you to double your training. That’s a good start. (7)
Text 7
M: Still waiting on updates, Mary.
W: Sorry, but it will take at least 48 hours for the lab results to come back.
M: Can you call tomorrow? I’ll be on a trip for the next whole week. I will be hard to reach. (8)
W: It shouldn’t be a problem. The doctor doesn’t think it’s serious. We can call you once you return. Or, perhaps we can reach you by email? (9)
M: That should be fine, as long as you’re saying I won’t have to come in to the hospital. (9)
W: Very slim chance. But we’ll send you an email this week with the findings, and you can visit the doctor once you return if you want.
M: I probably will come in, since I doubt I’ll understand what they say.
W: That’s OK. I’ll translate them for you when I send them.
Text 8
W: How do students pay taxes in America? I want a job to make extra money while studying, but I’m not a citizen, so I don’t have a social security number. (10) I also don’t have a work visa, so I don’t have an income tax number.
M: Actually, you don’t need them! As a university student on a valid study visa, you’re allowed to work up to 20 hours per month. If an employer asks, you show your student permit number.
W: That sounds convenient.
M: It is! When I studied in America, I helped a professor organize classes. It’s the most common job for students. (11) What do you plan to do?
W: I want to work at a library for a couple of hours per week. Since I worked at my mom’s bookstore during the summers, I think it should be pretty easy for me.
M: Just don’t work too much. I know it’s common for students to do part-time jobs there, but working 10 hours or more tends to affect your grades. (12)
Text 9
W: Oh hey, Tom! I haven’t seen you here in a while. Too busy lately? (13)
M: Busy as always. But actually, I threw my back out last month while I was on vacation. (13)
W: So you’re being careful and avoiding the weights area today? (14)
M: That was the plan. But look — the swimming pool is closed, so I can’t use that. And the bicycle machine is broken. (14) I think I’m just going to go home. I’ll come back tomorrow when there’s something I can actually use.
W: Wait, I have an idea. One way you could finish your training is by jogging home!
M: I would definitely do that. But I took my car today. Funny, right? I normally take the bus here. (15)
W: I never even knew you owned a car. In that case, can you give me a ride? I’ll have to call a taxi otherwise.
M: Sure. Let me know when you’re finished exercising and we can go.
W: I’m done. Let me just get out of my exercise clothes and we’ll hit the road. (16)
Text 10 (第17题为推断题)
We all know drugs are bad for you. Drugs are incredibly addicting and they can even kill you. Those are why drugs are banned by laws. However, did you know that there is something we all take that also gets us addicted? It’s all around us — in our food, and in our drinks. That is sugar. (18) Obviously, the health effects and other consequences of sugar are not nearly as severe as those of drugs. That is why we haven’t noticed that sugar can be compared with illegal substances, in at least one aspect. When we consume a lot of drinks with high levels of sugar, we want to drink more and more. Now, scientists know why, and it has to do with how sugar affects our brains. You might not notice that drinking soda makes you happy, or even think that the idea is ridiculous. (19) But, if you suddenly drink only water, you will become extremely sad for 1–2 weeks, and your thinking ability will decrease for 2–4 weeks. We must do more to control how much sugar we consume. In some countries, the government has even put limits on how much sugar can be added to snacks and food. While these laws are mainly a reaction to the population becoming too heavy, I believe they will also have other benefits. (20) For example, in brain health and tooth health.
