Alexander Tsao, a keen rock climber for several years, was climbing the walls at a gym near his home in Redmond, Washington, when he noticed that the ropes were frequently being replaced with new ones. Just 16 at the time, Tsao wondered what happened to the old ropes. He asked the gym owners and found out the ropes had to be discarded regularly due to safety regulations. He was surprised to find that so many ropes were sent to landfills.
This discovery inspired him to find a solution to the environmental issue of climbing rope waste. He considered possible ideas and ways to up cycle the discarded ropes, deciding to turn them into leashes(拴狗带) for dogs.
Once he had made his plan, Tsao contacted all the climbing gyms in Washington State, introducing his idea of recycling old ropes. Some were doubtful at first, but many gyms agreed to donate their used ropes. Tsao spent months testing and designing his products and filling documents to become a nonprofit organization which he called Rocks2Dogs.
To make the leashes, Tsao and volunteers first wash and dry the ropes. They cut them into different lengths, ranging from4 to 10 feet, and then burn the ends to prevent them from fraying(磨损). They add a clip and handle to each end, and cover the leash's hardware with shrink tape.
Because making the leashes now is a full-time job, Tsao has asked his friends, family and neighbors for help. “We have made and sold over a thousand leashes, which add up to over 10,000 feet of rope being saved from landfills," says Tsao. The leashes come in various colors. There are also half-price leashes made from ropes with slight imperfections. These start at $7.49 while most other leashes start at $ 14.99. To date, the nonprofit has raised more than $ 35,000. Much of this money has been donated to animal shelters.

When “irregardless” was included in Merriam-Webster dictionary, it caused wide disagreements. “Irregardless” has been in widespread and near-constant use since 1795, when a newspaper called The Charleston City Gazelle of Charleston Ga first used it. “We do not make the English language, and we merely record it,” the dictionary’s staff wrote in “Words of the Week”.
The word’s definition, when we read it, would seem to be without regard. However, Merriam-Webster defines “irregardless” as “nonstandard” but meaning the same as “regardless”. According to Merriam-Webster, “Many people find ‘irregardless’ to be a ridiculous word, as the ir-prefix usually indicates negative meaning; however, in this case it appears to make the meaning of ‘regardless’ stronger.”
“It’s not a real word. I don’t care what the dictionary says.” responds author Michelle Ray, who teaches English in Silver Spring, Md. And she says she’s still planning to mark “irregardless” as incorrect on her students’ work.
An American newspaper the Baltimore Sun published the word in editor John McIntyre’s commentary on Saturday: “‘Irregardless’ is too a word; you just don’t understand dictionaries. People get upset about the dictionary because they think it is some sort of official document. But actually, it’s not. It’s just lexicographers identifying words that people use and trying to find out how they are spelled, how they are pronounced, what meanings they have and where they came from.”
“The dictionary’s recognition doesn’t enroll a word as correct in the English language,” McIntyre says. “It just says this is a word that a lot of people use in English. And here’s what we know about it.” So it’s a word, but its use is still discouraged in formal writing.
28.What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A.To criticize the use of “irregardless”.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To make a definition of “irregardless”.
D.To give an example.
29.What can we learn from the passage?
A.“Irregardless” had been in widespread and near-constant use before 1975.
B.The dictionary’s staff rarely record the English language.
C.Michelle Ray thinks the use of “irregardless” formal but incorrect.
D.People are still not encouraged to use “irregardless” in formal writing.
30.What is the attitude of McIntyre to the appearance of “irregardless” in Merriam-Webster dictionary?
A.Favorable. B.Conservative. C.Indifferent. D.Ambiguous.
31.What can be the best title for the passage?
A.“Irregardless” Is Frequently Used in Formal Writing
B.“Irregardless” Shouldn’t Be Included in the Dictionary
C.Regardless of What You Think, “Irregardless” Is a Word
D.Experts Can’t Agree on the Meaning of “Irregardless”
D
A shortage of semiconductors (半导体) has helped firms such as Nvidia, whose chips (芯片) power everything from video gaming to machine learning and data centres. But boom time for sellers means misery for buyers. Carmakers, whose products have become computers on wheels, are among the victims. Analysts say the industry might build around 5 million fewer cars this year, all for want of the chips. Apple and Microsoft have also warned that they will be affected.
The shortage is the result of a sudden rise in demand. Chip making has been enjoying strong growth for decades as computers have stepped into every corner of society. But there was a strong upward trend during the pandemic. Locked-down consumers shopped online, had meetings remotely, and killed time with video-streaming and video gaming. The crisis has had three consequences, two encouraging and one less so.
The first is an investment boom. Big producers such as Intel, Samsung and TSMC are planning to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on extra capacity (产能) over the next few years. As in many markets, high prices are the best cure for high prices.
The second is that the chip industry’s customers are adapting, too. When demand fell early in the pandemic, carmakers cut their orders with chipmakers. Following Tesla, Volkswagen has announced plans to develop driver-assistance chips in-house.
Unwelcome effect has been a sudden rise of techno-nationalism. America is planning to hand out billions of dollars to attract chipmakers back from East Asia. Europe wants to double its share of global production, to 20%,by 2030. Even Britain has declared the fate of a small chip factory in Wales to be a matter of national security.
Chips have come to occupy what used to be called the “commanding heights” of an economy, in the way that car factories did in the 20th century. But as last century’s governments discovered, subsidies (补贴) lend 10 oversupply. Personally, the chip shortage is mostly a self-solving problem. Governments should resist the temptation to see themselves as saviours (救星).
32.What is the main cause of the sudden shortage of chips according to the passage?
A.Economic crisis
B.The outbreak of the pandemic.
C.Governments’ control.
D.Great demand in online products.
33.What is the discouraging result of the chip shortage according to the passage?
A.Hot investment in chips.
B.Carmakers’ adaptation to the market.
C.Arise of techno-nationalism.
D.Realization of technological globalization.
34.What does the author tend to think in the last paragraph?
A.Markets are the cure for the chip shortage.
B.Government subsidies will lead to waste.
C.The government should rescue the market.
D.Car factories in the 20th century were on the rise.
35.Which would be the best title for the passage?
A.Chip Shortage—A Self-solving Problem
B.Techno-nationalism—A War without Smoke
C.Challenges—Promises of New Opportunities
D.High Prices—the Best Cure for High Prices

Why You Should Stop Complaining
When living out our daily lives, it’s often easy to blame the world for our problems. 36 But the biggest difference is simply our reactions to them. Here are three reasons why you should change your reaction to a situation and stop complaining.
The world owes you nothing.
The world really does have nothing to do with you or anyone else. The planet will continue to exist without you on it. 37 However, it really isn’t the case once we’re an adult. The world doesn’t provide us with the same blanket of comfort as our careers once did, which only means one thing: It’s up to us to provide that blanket for ourselves and no one else.
38
If you look back at your own life, you’ll begin to realize that everything you have ever done was all a result of the decisions you’ve made sure there may have been people around you who have convinced you to do something. But it all ultimately depends on your decisions. 39 Your life is just like a blank canvas, and you are the painter. Start to think about what your hopes and dreams might be and remind yourself daily that it’s all up to you to make things happen.
You can’t be a leader if you behave like a victim.
It’s really easy to put blame on things that are external to you. 40 So what can you change? Being a leader in your life takes courage and requires the willingness to face your fears, experience failure, and take complete personal responsibility of everything that happens to you.
A. What are you worrying about?
B. So who’s really to blame?
C. You are in charge of your own life.
D. You are helped by people around you.
E. We were nurtured and looked after as kids.
F. It’s true that there are things in the world we can’t control.
G. As it avoids personal responsibility and allows you to refuse the possibility that you may have things that can be changed.

When my little brother Tom was four, Mom said something like “I’d give anything to have a few more hours in the day.” And Tom said, “Why don’t we buy a bigger clock?” If time worked that way, I could have used an extra-big clock last week!
Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat, “I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh. “I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous—I wasn’t nervous at all. 1 love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box (手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abucla had just made cookies and wanted to know if I’d come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abucla’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o’clock when I finally got home.1 planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.”
Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days.
