It has always been hrrible fr me t picture my life in ld age. My recent visits t the senir care center, hwever, eased sme f my fears and prvided valuable fd fr thught.
Lking fr meaningful ways t spend my weekends after my exams, I signed up t a prgram f arts and crafts fr the elderly run by my schlmates. I was infrmed that the Renci Nursing Hme, where the prgram wuld be held, accmmdated sme f the less frtunate elderly in Singapre. Sme backgrund research gave me the impressin that many f them suffered frm physical issues and had little family supprt. As a result, I expected the atmsphere there t be discuraging. And, judging by the lack f interest in the painting activities, I truly sensed a feeling f purpselessness there. Given that we live in a sciety in which the bnds between the generatins are weakening, perhaps the disappinting atmsphere in the hme wasn’t surprising. The peple were cut ff frm the ties that make life meaningful.
Is it safe t say then that ur lives after retirement will likely feel aimless? But after I spke t a Prtuguese-Chinese man, I thught that this wasn’t necessarily s. At the age f 90, he displayed a surprisingly strng sense f cntrl ver his life. His liveliness was exceptinal amng the elderlyppulatin in the hme. He had spent his life either traveling arund the wrld as a backpacker, r wrking hard in Singapre t save up fr his trips. He had made it a rule t learn freign languages, exercise and eat healthily — smething he cntinued t d during his stay in the nursing hme.

They say prcrastinatin (拖延) is the thief f time — actually deadlines are. New research frm the University f Otag has fund that if yu want smene t help yu ut with smething, it is best nt t set a deadline at all. But if yu d set a deadline, make it shrt.
Prfessr Stephen Knwles and his c-authrs tested the effect f deadline length n task cmpletin fr their research published in Ecnmic Inquiry. Participants were invited t cmplete an nline survey cncerning a charity dnatin. They were given either ne week, ne mnth, r n deadline t respnd. Prfessr Knwles says althugh the tpic f the survey was abut charity, theresults apply t any situatin where smene asks anther persn fr help.
The study fund respnses t the survey were lwest fr the ne-mnth deadline and highest when n deadline was specified. N deadline and the ne-week deadline led t many early respnses, while a lng deadline appeared t give peple permissin t prcrastinate, and then frget. Prfessr Knwles wasn’t surprised t find that specifying a shrter deadline increased the chances f receiving a respnse cmpared t a lnger deadline. Hwever, he did find it interesting that they received the mst respnses when n deadline was specified.
“We interpret this as evidence that specifying a lnger deadline, as ppsed t a shrt deadline r n deadline at all, remves the urgency t act,” he says. “Peple therefre put ff undertaking the task, and since they are inattentive, pstpning it results in lwer respnse rates.”
He says it is pssible that nt specifying a deadline might still have led participants t assume that there is an unspken deadline. Prfessr Knwles hpes his research can help reduce the amunt f prcrastinating peple d. “Many peple prcrastinate. They have the best intentins f helping smene ut, but just d nt get arund t ding it.”
28. Why did Prfessr Knwles d the research?

A. A crwd-funding appeal with n deadline.
B. A ne-week pst-disaster dnatin.
C. A ne-mnth applicatin fr assistance.
D. A charity dnatin due n a given date.
30. Why d peple prcrastinate when given a lng deadline?
A. They are unwilling t act.B. They dislike the deadline.
C. They lack a sense f urgency.D. They are t busy t remember.
31. What des Prfessr Knwles talk abut cncerning the research in the last paragraph?
A. Its cncern.B. Its limitatin.C. Its backgrund.D. Its significance.

An ecnmist, Adam Smith, famusly wrte that “it is nt frm the benevlence (慈善) f the butcher, the brewer r the baker, that we expect ur dinner, but frm their regard t their wn self-interest.” Like Smith, many ecnmists tday believe ne’s self-interest is what drives cmpetitin and grwth in market ecnmies. Yet, in an increasingly intercnnected sciety, it is even mre crucial t have cperative skills. Thus we shuld encurage cperatin t better prepare children fr the future.
Firstly, cperatin is an especially prized sft skill in the present age. As a study prves, sft skills such as gd cmmunicatin and empathy (共情) indicate utstanding emplyees as cmpared t technical skills r knwledge. In cntrast, extremely cmpetitive and individualistic behaviur may damage scial relatins in the cmmunity f c-wrkers. Even the mst cmpetent emplyee may fail t pursue his gals effectively withut thers’ help.
Mrever, encuraging cperatin bst children’s self-respect that better prepares them fr the cmpetitive wrld. Many mdern scieties are cnsumed by a crazy drive fr success and the pressure t perfrm has infiltrated bth classrms and ffices, causing higher rates f anxiety and depressin amng peple. Teamwrk can help an individual realize each has his r her wn unique abilities and that anther persn’s strengths dn’t discunt his r her talents. Thus, cperatin can cnfirm children’s self-wrth by crrecting the insight that winning r paper achievement is the nly measure f success.
Hwever, critics may claim adapting t cmpetitin shuld be given pririty in educatin and parenting. T achieve ne’s ambitins, ne has t actively fight fr pprtunities and distinguish neself frm thers. Nevertheless, since passin can already stimulate children t fulfill their ambitins, the need t encurage cmpetitin may be at the end f the day. As much as external cmpetitin can drive peple t pursue excellence, internal mtivatin is at least equally r even mre essential, and cperatin plays an instrumental rle in helping ne uncver ne’s mtivatins.
32. What can be inferred frm Adam Smith’s wrds?
A. Our sciety is increasingly intercnnected.
B. Our dinner is made ut f the regards t markets.
C. Self-interest pushes the develpment f ecnmies.
D. The butcher, the brewer r the baker is nt sympathetic.
33. What des the underlined wrd “infiltrated” mean in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
A. Brightened. B. Decrated. C. Defended. D. Entered.
34. Which f the fllwing might the authr agree with?
A. Paper achievement is the nly measure f success.
B. One’s ambitins can be achieved thrugh cperatin.
C. Cmpetitin is nt necessary fr peple t pursue excellence.
D. Actively fighting fr distinguishing neself shuld be priritized.
35. What is the authr’s purpse f writing this passage?
A. T intrduce the advantages f cperatin.
B. T cmpare cperatin with cmpetitin.
C. T suggest enhancing cmpetitive skills.
D. T advcate teaching children t cperate.

The study fund respnses t the survey were lwest fr the ne-mnth deadline and highest when n deadline was specified 和…they received the mst respnses when n deadline was specified.
由第四段“ a lnger deadline, the urgency t act,...”
Prfessr Knwles hpes his research can help reduce the amunt f prcrastinating peple d.

.空前Or it can cause prblems and tth damage later n.
