I believe in the power of science fiction, not just for its capacity to turn dreams into reality, but also for its power to bond together those who share a common view of the future. For me, that’s true for my relationship with my dad. Some fathers and sons bond over sports, fishing or hunting, but my dad and I bond over Star Trek. We tried a trip to Disney World, but one of my earliest memories wasn't Mickey, but a Klingon battle cruiser on the screen.
Over the years, nearly every setting and situation has become far away for my dad and me. When it's warm at night, we’re not driving along some dark streets in Indiana, but going at a slow speed with stars dimly shining. Both of us are thinking of them, without needing to say a word. All these imaginations of other universes have together created a private universe for my dad and me.
Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, once said, “Science fiction is a way of thinking, a way of logic that bypasses a lot of nonsense. It allows people to look directly at important subjects.” A lifetime of science fiction has influenced more than just my relationship with my dad, but has also helped me shape my own hopes for the future. I’m now a science writer.
Yes, science fiction has made me into a “nerd” and it also has been a source of joy for my family, making me an optimist while enabling me to think critically about the danger of technology. Thank those authors who have shared their visions: the world and my family are better for it. There is little doubt that house cats first developed naturally from ancient wild cats. The closest relative is the African wild cat which still lives in Africa today. This is understandable because the first house cats came from Africa.
Cats first started to live around people in Egypt about 6,000-7,000 years ago.From Egypt, cats started to move around the world. This is about the same time that Egyptians began storing grain in buildings. Scientists used to believe that people tamed cats to catch mice and protect the grain. However, cats don't like to be told what to do! Now, scientists believe that cats followed the mice and learned to accept people. Finally, some of the cats began to grow comfortable around people. These were smaller cats that needed protection. As these cats and people got used to each other, then they moved in together. Around 5,000 years ago, cats started to live with people.
Soon cats were in Greece, then the Middle East and China. They moved along Egyptian business roads keeping away mice and keeping people around them. After the Romans came to Egypt,they also accepted the cats and brought them to Europe. These cats likely bred with other cats to form the many kinds of house cats we have today.
Cats are relatively recent house animals. House cats still have a lot in common with their wild relatives. Cats sleep a lot to save energy just like wild cats. They will often get food at night as well. House cats are generally peaceful and friendly, but be careful! If a cat feels it is in danger, it will fight back-just like a wild cat!

Several companies have begun creating paper bottles to replace glass and plastic ones. Paper bottles are easy to recycle, and also weigh less than glass or plastic, meaning they'll require less energy to produce and move around.
A company called Paboco has been working with other companies to develop paper bottles. The companies are creating their own bottle designs, but they're sharing what they learn to promote the development of paper bottle technology.
One of the biggest challenges is preventing a paper bottle leaking（泄漏）.The inside of the bottle needs a special coating to make sure the liquid doesn’t leak through. Many companies are lining（做衬垫） their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic. Though bottle makers may say this liner can be recycled, many recycling programs don't have the right machines to handle these liners.
A Danish beer company called Carlsberg is working with Paboco on a paper bottle called the “Green Fiber Bottle”. Currently the bottle uses a plastic liner. In the future the company hopes to use a "bio-plastic" that will break down naturally over time. And a company named Diageo just announced the first paper bottle whose inside uses a non-plastic coating.
But even without the plastic，paper bottles aren’t perfect. Most paper bottles use wood pulp（纸浆）， meaning trees need to be cutdown. To solve this problem,Frugalpac,a company from the United Kingdom, has created wine bottles made of recycled paper.Frugalpac still uses a plastic liner,though.
Companies will need to see how long liquids can be stored in the paper bottles and make sure the bottles don't affect the taste. But with so many companies working toward the same goal,it's likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.
