Virgin Islands National Park
If snow isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Virgin Islands National Park is perfect for you to escape winter. With white sandy beaches, clear blue water, and more than 800 subtropical plants, you will feel like you traveled outside the U.S. to a tropical area. Two days after eight e-sports(电子竞技)games were officially announced to be included in the 19th Asian Games, China’s Edward Gaming (EDG) team earned its first League of Legends World Championship title with a 3-2 win over South Korea in a tough battle on November 7th, immediately drawing cheers from people around the country. The topic “EDG wins” had been viewed more than 2.63 billion times as of press on Sina Weibo, ranking the top trending topic for a long time.
With the popularity of digital technology, new forms of cultural exchanges have been appearing, of which e-sports are the most popular. Unlike texts and videos, e-sports go beyond the barriers of language and are understandable around the world. E-sports mostly appeal to those in their early 20s, as shown by the carnival of college students. That in turn makes them a good bridge of communicationbetween young Chinese people and their counterparts(对应的人)around the world.
More importantly, the e-sports industry is sustainable in spreading Chinese culture, as the large audiences mean huge commercial potential. In 2020 alone, the sales revenue(收入) of the domestic e-sports industry exceeded 278.69 billion yuan, and involved 280,000 enterprises, which in turn created over 10 million jobs. According to a media report, nearly 95 percent of graduates from e-sports majors at the Communication University of China in Nanjing, succeeded in finding a job after graduation this year, with 62 percent of them devoted to the e-sports industry, including video game clubs, game design companies and game competition operation companies.
The inclusion of e-sports in major sporting events has been a much-discussed topic in recent years. With more Chinese gaming clubs and teams emerging, the industry is expected to further prosper and continue spreading Chinese culture to the world.

A major new facility to pull CO2 out of the atmosphere has started operating in Iceland, which is a boost to an emerging technology that experts say could eventually play animportant role in reducing greenhouse gases.
The plant in southwest Iceland is the biggest of its kind, its builder says. It is able to capture(捕获)900 tons of CO2 every year but it needs heat and electricity to work. It is using energy produced from waste and is built on the roof of a waste incineration plant, and through the burning of rubbish, energy is generated.
Human-sized fans are built into a series of boxes. They take CO2 out of the air, catching it in spongelike filters(过滤器). The filters are blasted with heat, freeing the gas, which is then mixed with water and pumped deep into deep underground basalt caves(玄武岩洞穴), where over time it turns into dark-gray stone.Pumping CO2 into the ground is just one way to deal with it. The makers are also selling the gas to be used again. The CO2can be captured just a few 100 miles away. It is pumped through an underground pipeline directly into a greenhouse. Vegetables and plants love CO2 and higher concentrations of the gas within the greenhouse improve the growth of plants.
By 2050, humanity will need to pull nearly a billion metric tons of CO2 from the atmosphere every year through direct air capture technology to achieve carbon neutral goals, according to International Energy Agency recommendations. The plant in Iceland will be able to capture 4000 metric tons annually — just a small amount of what will be necessary, but one that Climeworks, the company that built it, says can grow rapidly as efficiency improves and costs decrease.
“This is a market that does not yet exist, but a market that urgently needs to be built,” said Christoph Gebald who co-founded Climeworks. “This plant that we have here is really the blueprint to further increasethesize and really industrialize.”
28. What do we know about the carbon capture facility from paragraph 2?
A. It is built at high altitudes. B. It uses waste to produce power.
C. It makes Iceland free of air pollution. D. It produces lots of heat during operation.
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The methods of breaking down CO2. B. The approaches to reusing waste gas.
C. The necessity of building greenhouses. D. The workings of the carbon-catching plant.
30. What can we expect from the future carbon capture technology?
A. It will decrease the cost of energy production.
B. It can help reach the carbon neutral goals in advance.
C. It will speed up the reduction of CO2 levels in the air.
D. It may replace the traditional carbon storage system.
31. What is Christoph Gebald’s attitude towards building the plants?
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Disapproving. D. Uncaring.
D
A national engineering laboratory in Tianjin is the base of the world’s largest and most advanced sound source identification system for commercial use.At first glance, the equipment, known as a sound camera and consisting of a big wheel with a supporting frame, resembles a mini Ferris wheel that lacks seats and cannot rotate.A closer look at the 5-meter-diameter wheel reveals high-tech features like an array of 144 sensors(传感器)used to capture, identify and analyze the source of noise on railways.“It is like a sound radar(雷达)for discovering noise,” said Hu Wenlin, vice head of the National Engineering Laboratory for Noise Control and Reduction at China Railway Design Corporation.
Hu said that the data produced by the machine allows engineers to better understand the sounds generated when a train passes by, such as which part produces the most noise. After analyzing the data, engineers can draw up precise plans to reduce noise and make construction plans accordingly. For example, if a railway passes a residential area with stricter noise abatement requirements, engineers can come up with a plan to minimizenoise, usually at greater expense. But if a railway passes a place with more relaxed noise control requirements, designers can make a cheaper plan.
Noise control technologies have been applied to dozens of major railway projects across the country. The sound camera, fully developed in China, is advanced by world standards, said Wang Changjin, the director of the National Engineering Laboratory. Before the sound camera was available, engineers usually used a pole fitted with sensors to collect sound data along railway lines.“It cannot be compared to the technique we are using now, which is far more accurate,” Wang said.
The machine is just one of many innovations developed by the laboratory. It has conducted many research projects on railways, leading to the development of key noise control equipment for high-speed railways and bringing quieter lives to people living near the lines.
32. Whatcan we know about the sound camera from paragraph 1?
A. It is invented by Hu Wenlin.
B. It is a sound radar in the shape of a wheel.
C. Itis fitted with many sensors to study noise.
D. It transforms sound information into images.
33. What does the underlined word “abatement” probably mean?
A. Monitoring. B. Ranking. C. Reducing. D. Analyzing.
34. What highlights the sound camera according to paragraph 3?
A. It is very easy to move. B. It consumes little energy.
C. It is available for everyone. D. It operates far more precisely.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Technology Frees People from Noise
B. Sound Camera Makes Rail Lines Quieter
C. The Importance of Conducting Sound Research
D. The Influence of Noise Pollution on People’s Life

A long time ago, when I worked in Ahmedabad, we would often drive to Mount Abu for short trips—it took us anywhere between seven to eight hours to drive up. That year, my close relatives were visiting from Lucknow during the holidays, and we made a plan to visit Abu for three days. Since there were seven of us, including my brother’s family who also lived in Ahmedabad, we hired two cabs. We picked ourselves into the vehicles, stacked (堆放) our luggage on the carriers on top and started out.
Soon it was time to return. During the journey back, we stopped at a Dhaba for tea and snacks near the Mehana district. That’s when I noticed suddenly that the rope with which the luggage was tied on and of the carriers had come loose and one of the suitcases was missing. It must have fallen off somewhere along the way.
Although it didn’t contain any valuables—just clothes and some cash, we decided to retrace our steps, drawing back four kilometers , looking for the bag. But luck wasn’t our friend: we could not locate it and returned to Ahmedabad depressed.
After about a month, one day, while in my office, I got a call from my assistant that a certain Mr. Shah wanted to see me. I was in the middle of a meeting so he was asked to wait. After I got done, I called him into my office.
I was looking after the development of small industries in the state at the time, so my immediate query was. “How can we help you? Do you want to set up an industry or are you facing any issues in your enterprise?”
To which he said, “No, sir. I have not come for any official help. It is a personal matter. Did you lose something recently?”
Of course, it all came back to me and I told him about the lost suitcase from the cab back from Mount Abu a month ago.

However, things changed for the better in the camp. All the participants were required to exercise every day, including variety of sports, such as playing table tennis, badminton and running. Besides,we are required to routinely keep a balanced diet, which enabled me to feel energetic and get refreshed.

【答案】Then Shah told his side of the story. While driving home, he noticed a suitcase lying by the side of the road. He left a message at the Lost and Found, but no one approached him for the suitcase. About a month passed, he could do nothing but break open the lock and found my name and address inside. Words failed me to convey my thanks for his kindness and generosity. Of course, I mentioned that I would visit his residence in the evening and collect my bag.
But the gentleman insisted on delivering the suitcase to me in person. In the evening he and his wife came to my house with the suitcase. We chatted over tea. I thanked them again. It was not for the belongings but for the efforts they spared to find me. We remained in touch for quite some time afterwards, but somehow we lost touch with each other. Hats off to him, the man who makes me realize that kindness still rules the world.

M: Gosh, now I am wondering which colour I should pick. He is really particular about the color.
W: That’s not difficult. What was the color of the last one he chose? He obviously chose it for a reason.

W: Henry, I heard you are going to China. Are you going there to take a holiday ?
M: No. I just took a holiday in Spain. I don’t have so many holidays. I’m going to the country to train some new employees. I’m afraid it’s going to be a long flight.
W: You bet. Why not read a book during your flight? It can make your trip more interesting. M: That’s a great idea. Do you have a book to recommend ?
W: Yes. It’s Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco. I read it last year and I read it with tears. It’s really worth reading.
M: It is a touching love story?.
W: No. It’s about two young Union soldiers. They become unlikely friends during the Civil War, experiencing physical wounds, heart-broken sacrifice, and the aching sadness of a beautiful friendship cruelly separated in a Confederate camp but never forgotten.
M: I love reading such stories. So what else books did the author writer?
W: The Blessing Cup and Thank You, Mr.Falker. Patricia Polacco writes from the heart, often drawing on family stories passed down through generations, such as in The Blessing Cup; She also tells her own moving story overcoming her difficulty in speaking in Thank You, Mr. Falker. M: Do you have all the three books ?
W: Yes. I’ll go back and fetch them for you now. Oh, nice tea. Thank you for it.
Test 10
W: What’s the attraction of coffee shops? It’s been said that J K. Rowling wrote the Harry Potter books sitting in one in Edinburgh. But you’re spending all day buying one expensive coffee after another and haven’t sold your first novel yet, the costs can really add up. For those who work outside of a traditional office or just want to take time out, there’s a new alternative in London: a pay-per-minute cafe. You’ll be given a clock when you come in to keep time. When you leave, you return the item and pay the bill. The cost of hanging out, eating , working and meeting new people in the place is 3 pennies per minute or &1.80 an hour. Customers help themselves to coffee and cookies. They can also bring their own food to eat while accessing the Internet through Wi-Fi. The new coffee shop’s atmosphere is relaxing. The shop’s owner, Ivan Meetin, believes his coffee shop is a bit like “social media”, but with a face. Like-minded people go there to socialize. Some feel so much at home that they wash the dishes. The concept of coffee shops, where you pay for the time and not for the cup, has proved popular in Russia. Only time will tell if the British will warm to the idea
