    试题01【山东省淄博市高三下学期一模】
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
There was a rich couple who was throwing a big New Year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their level of standard so they didn’t mind paying for it. After purchasing all they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, and looked very unhealthy, and his clothes were torn, and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.
They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods to their home. The old porter quoted just $20, well below the market price. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make even one time’s meal so he needed anything he could earn.
The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, and two hours passed, but the porter still didn’t deliver their stuff.
The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person, but you never listen to me. I am sure instead of delivering the goods to our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”
They both left towards the market. On their way near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their goods in his cart! The angry wife asked him, “Where is that old thief? This is our goods and he was supposed to deliver them. It seems you poor thieves are stealing our goods and going to sell them.”

Paragraph 1:When the porter heard the angry wife asking.

Paragraph 2:Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes,

    【范文】
    Paragraph 1:
When the porter heard the angry wife asking, he turned back. The porter replied, “Madam, please calm down. I’m not a thief. That poor old man was sick since last month. He couldn’t earn enough to even have a single meal of the day. Therefore, he fell down and handed me $15, saying, ‘I have taken an advance for this delivery, and you deliver the goods to the couple’s home.’ Madam, he was poor and hungry, but he was an honest man. I was just on the way to completing the old man’s last delivery to your home.”
    Paragraph 2:
Upon hearing this, the husband had tears in his eyes, and the wife felt so ashamed that she had no courage to look her husband in the eyes. Suddenly she rushed to the market. Half an hour later, the wife came back with some food in her hand. She passed the food on to the porter, and said sorry to the porter, saying that she shouldn’t suspect them, and took them as thieves. At last, the porter took the goods to their house, and the rich couple changed their attitude to the man like the porter.

The most delicious memories seem to happen during the holidays. And like a squirrel preparing for winter, I put them away to enjoy slowly during the long winter months. Sometimes, I enjoy them for years.
Among them are sweetest recollections: my little girls at the church play and the moment they got their first angel wings; a pink dolly stroller(手推车) wheeled into the bedroom with a tiny voice declaring, ''Look what Santa Claus brought me! ''; or New Year's snowmen wearing bright scarves borrowed from a grandma's fragrant drawer.
But there is one memory that is a little bittersweet -- sort of like 80% dark chocolate, but still good for you.
This story brings to mind a colorful candy dish and a very little boy. The occasion was somewhere between Christmas and New Year's when a few candies in a dish remained behind, a bright spot in dull winter gray.
Wrapped in December's chill, my then 3-year old grandson, Justin, and I had dashed from the warmth of my parked car into the building where I planned to take care of a few work-related tasks.
A smiling secretary greeted us as we brushed the snowflakes and rubbed our hands to chase the cold. Then with my grandchild close to my side, I busied myself, finishing the items of business that had brought us there. But while his hand remained in mine, his eyes fell on the candy dish sitting nearby.
As we turned to leave, the thoughtful and very observant woman behind the desk asked the question all children wait to hear.
''Honey, '' the kindly woman said, peering over her glasses at Justin. ''Would you like a candy bar? '' she asked, her hand pushing the dish close for an easier reach.
The boy looked up questioningly, his eyes meeting mine, permission hanging in the air. A slight nod from me and then a hurried beeline to the candy dish followed. One candy bar was already in his hand.

Para 1: ''Justin! '' I said from the doorway.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Para 2: In the humor of the moment, I felt something hard to swallow.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

    【范文】
''Justin!'' I said from the doorway. By this time his pudgy hands had grabbed one -- and only one -- and he made his way back to me. My voice was somewhat serious as I realized manners had been forgotten. ''What do you say? '' Hearing this, the little boy turned on his heel, promptly returning to the candy dish. ''Get Grandma one, too! '' I laughed. The secretary laughed. And even little Justin innocently giggled at the fun we were having.
In the humor of the moment, I felt something hard to swallow. There was a truth that lingered long after the strawberry candy taste had disappeared. What example had I set for this little one while often in my care? Was he learning more about ''getting'' and less about gratitude -- that heartfelt ''thank you''? In the years since, I've always loved to remember that moment. But one gift I hope we all leave with our children is the importance of a grateful heart. Really, what could be sweeter?
Hearing this, the little boy turned on his heel, promptly returning to the candy dish.中使用了现在分词作状语;There was a truth that lingered long after the strawberry candy taste had disappeared.中that引导同位语从句;What example had I set for this little one while often in my care?中what引导主语从句。这些表达的使用不仅给文章增色添彩,也展示了作者扎实的语言功底。

    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 续写的词数应为150左右。
As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn't sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned "secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid's name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder(胭脂粉).The girls sitting near me laughed the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend of giving it to me. I quickly joined in "How terrible," I heard myself saying "What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn't even want it." The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn't normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.

    Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间),tears streaming down her face.

    Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason.

    【范文】
    Paragraph 1:
Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth(厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. She shouted at me with anger, “If you don’t want my gift you can just leave it instead of laughing at it. This is the best powder from my mum! “Before I could say a word, Janet dashed out, leaving me dumb with deep regret. But soon I clenched my fingers and made up my mind to find Janet and say sorry to her. There she was, sitting in a tree shadow wiping her eyes.

    Paragraph 2:
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I was not a mean girl by judging people’s presents. The reason why I complained in front of the girls was that I wanted to fit in, having a sense of belonging in the group. Hearing my sincere words, Janet calmed herself down after constant sobs and said, “True friendship comes from genuine care and love for each other. I think that’s our teacher’s intention of this ‘secret friend’ assignment”. That day, I learned to cherish real friendship.

Kent was a manager of a furniture agency. His establishment nearly went bankrupt (倒闭)because of the wrong decision he had made. He was so regretful and depressed that he planned to drive to a bar alone to release his emotions.
It was near midnight in an extremely cold winter, and the temperature was minus 9 degrees centigrade. There were few people in the street. Suddenly, a figure of an old madam entered his line of sight. She was standing sideways near a platform, dressed in a plain coat, dragging a suitcase, and holding a plastic bag in the other hand. The slight old lady was seemingly more than 80. She was trembling in cutting wind. Now she kept motioning Kent for a ride. Although Kent was somewhat angry about the old madam's disturbing,he wouldn't like to leave her in the cold night. He noticed she coughed violently and thought that she might be ill and really needed help. So he braked near her.
The madam said, "Would you please take me for a ride? I can offer double fare. . . " Kent interrupted her, "I will charge you nothing! Come on!" The madam pointed to her luggage and said, "Could you put my suitcase into the car?" Kent stepped out and put it in the trunk.
Kent proceeded to drive. He stopped at a petrol station where he wanted to purchase gallons of gasoline (汽油). During the interval they waited in a queue, the madam began her narration, "Could you please send me to the charity house in the suburbs? I want to send them something. I had been given help there 50 years ago. The president and workers were all good guys." She burst into tears,"Now they've all passed away. The life was tough at that time, but we all loved and cared about each other. I've held a desire to be back there again for long." Kent realized the madam was recalling a section of the good missing days. A complicated feeling surrounded him, and he decided to cancel his plan and stay with the old madam.

I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign “Going Out of Business Sale”, I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.
All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat a canoe(轻舟) exactly like my husband’s dream Supremo Numero-Uno, whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer’s suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a “Hi. I’m Mathew”. “Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What’s wrong with it? Why is it only $750?”
“Oh. There’s nothing wrong with it. It’s brand new. We’re closing the store. It’s on clearance like everything else. I’ll go check.” A few minutes later he came back and said, “I’m sorry ma’am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package.”
I felt tears well up in my eyes. “Oh well”, I said sadly. “Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband’s dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He’s going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It’s been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won’t buy anything, but it’s just an old man’s silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired,” my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.

The first thing Eileen Korey noticed when she got into the car that Wednesday afternoon in early May was a small diamond ring in the tray(托盘)between the front seats. It hadn't been there before. Weeks earlier, she had taken the car in to have the airbag replaced. The car belonged to her daughter and son-in-law and she was helping them out. Now she was picking it up. That's when she saw the ring. Korey, 64, of Lake Oswego quickly contacted her daughter and son-in-law to ask if they were missing a diamond ring or if any of their friends had reported losing a ring. They both wrote back, saying they had no idea what she was talking about.
Korey took the ring to the service desk at the garage to ask if any women technicians might have left a ring in the car while they were working on it. The woman behind the counter said only men worked on the cars.
Korey asked if the desk clerk could get information from the guy who had replaced the airbag. Over a two-way radio(对讲机), Helbt said he'd placed the ring in the tray when it dropped to the car's floor after he opened up the steering column to replace the airbag. He was not sure how it got there.
She knew a friend who was a jeweler and stopped by to have her look at the ring to see if it was real. Her friend said the diamond, set in a white gold hand, was worth$1, 200 and Korey could easily sell it for $500. But she wouldn't sell it. After making sure the ring didn’t belong to anyone in her family—or anyone at the auto shop Korey tracked down the first owner of the car using paperwork she found in the glove box. Her detective work led her to a dealership in Beaverton, and the car's first owners:Daniel and Ashleigh Hannah. The Hannahs had purchased the small ring when they got engaged and were saving money to buy a house.

    Paragraph 1:
One Sunday afternoon, they were driving to an event in their car but had to stop at the bank and use the ATM machine. Ashleigh, showing her husband where to turn, gestured wildly with her left hand and felt the ring slip off. However, when searching the car carefully, they weren't able to find it. They figured it fell out of the open driver's side window.
    Paragraph 2:
The couple searched the parking lot and the car for hours. Nothing. Later, back at home, the Hannah has searched through the car for hours. Nothing. Years later, Daniel bought his wife a much larger engagement ring. Finally, this month Korey made contact with Daniel Hannah. They met, and as a reward for returning the ring, she simply asked that Daniel send her a photo of the moment he surprised his wife with her lost engagement ring. On Mother's Day, Ashleigh's son gave her the ring. It didn't fit and was much smaller than her replacement ring, but none of that mattered.

Ashleigh, showing her husband where to turn, gestured wildly with her left hand and felt the ring slip off.中使用了现在分词作状语;They met, and as a reward for returning the ring, she simply asked that Daniel send her a photo of the moment he surprised his wife with her lost engagement ring. 中that引导虚拟语气的宾语从句。这些表达的使用使文章色彩纷呈。

A funny thing happened to Arthur when he was on the way to work one day. As he walked along Park Avenue near the First National Bank,he heard the sound of someone trying to start a car. He tried again and again but couldn’t get the car moving. Arthur turned and looked inside at the face of a young man who looked worried. Arthur stopped and asked,“It looks like you’ve got a problem,” Arthur said.
“I’m afraid so. I’m in a big hurry and I can’t start my car.”
“Is there something I can do to help?” Arthur asked. The young man looked at the two suitcases in the back seat and then said,“Thanks. If you’re sure it wouldn’t be too much trouble, you could help me get these suitcases into a taxi.”
“No trouble at all. I’d be glad to help.”
The young man got out and took one of the suitcases from the back seat. After placing it on the ground,he turned to get the other one. Just as Arthur picked up the first suitcase and started walking,he heard the long loud noise of an alarm.
It was from the bank. There had been a robbery(抢劫)!
Park Avenue had been quiet a moment before. Now the air was filled with the sound of the alarm and the shouts of people running from all directions. Cars stopped and the passengers joined the crowd in front of the bank. People asked each other,“What happened?” But everyone had a different answer.
Arthur, still carrying the suitcase, turned to look at the bank and walked right into the young woman in front of him.
She looked at the suitcase and then at him. Arthur was surprised. “Why is she looking at me like that?” He thought. “The suitcase! She thinks I’m the bank thief!”
Arthur looked around at the crowd of people. He became frightened, and without another thought,he started to run.

    Paragraph 1:

    【答案】
As he was running,Arthur heard the young man shouting behind,“Stop, stop!” Arthur immediately realized that the young man was the bank robber. So Arthur didn’t stop, but continued to run until he saw and caught a taxi in front of him. He quickly put the suit case in the car and said to the driver,“Please hurry to the Police Station. I have a case to report to the police;the man shouting behind is the bank thief!” The taxi raced away to the Police Station like an arrow.
The taxi stopped in front of the Police Station and Arthur said to the police who had been waiting and who had already received the robbery report,“This suitcase is that of the bank robber. It may be filled with the money stolen from the bank. I hand it to you. Please get ready to arrest the man.”

A mother was angry with her daughter’s school after the youngster was sent home because her trousers were believed too tight by teachers. Teachers at Barnsley Academy,South Yorkshire, have been lining up pupils and measuring their trouser width with a ruler if they don’t look appropriate.
The school introduced a strict uniform policy just after Christmas and it has made some parents and pupils angry. On its website Barnsley Academy states trousers must be at least 10cm wide and says smart, tailored, plain, black school trousers of waist height to ankle length are to be worn. A spokesperson for the school, said: “The academy has a strict uniform policy which parents and students are fully aware of and which is being properly carried out. All students are expected to adhere to the policy. Our uniform policy here at Cardinal Newman Catholic School is well established and we are simply reminding students of the policy as they come back to start a new term.”
Jane Ogden,36,the mother of Ellie,14 and Mollie Young,12,who both study in the school,is one of the parents less than impressed with the rule. Her daughter Ellie was stopped from going to school between Monday and Wednesday last week for her trousers being too tight, even though, she claims, they were 13cm wide. Ellie was not alone when she was given such orders—19 other girls were also being sent home on the same day.
Mrs Ogden, who spent £72 on trousers for her seven children at the start of the year, said teachers were going too far. She said:“The school said that it was a changing problem and that they needed to show the children how to be respectful. I pride myself in my children giving me respect but I think we should respect them as well.” The school has thought these trousers suitable. Mrs Ogden, said:“Ellie is in year 10,so it’s an important GCSE(普通中等教育证书) year in her education and now she has to catch up with work.”

She claimed that the school also had a major rule on other areas of the uniform and had banned makeup._____________________________________________________________________________________

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________

    【答案】One possible version:
She claimed that the school also had a major rule on other areas of the uniform and had banned makeup. Mrs Ogden said: “The school tells the girls that they can’t wear makeup but the teachers are wearing it. It’s just one rule for one and another for another. Which is more important, school trousers or an education?” To stop her daughter being sent of school again,Mrs Ogden has bought a new pair of trousers for Ellie, which are 14.5cm in width. And soon she could go on studying in the school again.
A notice about the uniform changes was posted on the school’s website. There is an increasing number of students wearing tight fitting trousers. Tight fitting trousers are not acceptable and are not allowed in the school. The school even pay for new trousers for some pupils, saying that they did not want to cause difficulties for parents. However, what they did was considered a waste of money.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. "Man, that’s a big dog!" he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he’d be easily caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn’t think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

The wolf kept growling at them from outside the car, unable to enter.
    Paragraph 2:
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. By this time, the wolf had already left. Mac’s friends then helped him get out of the car. Mac and his friends thanked the couple in the car as they drove off. Then Mac got back on his bicycle and pedaled back home with his friends. It was summer, and my dad wanted to treat me to a vacation like never before. He decided to take me on a trip to the Wild West.
We took a plane to Albuquerque, a big city in the state of New Mexico. We reached Albuquerque in the late afternoon. Uncle Paul, my dad’s friend, picked us up from the airport and drove us up to his farm in Pecos.
His wife Tina cooked us a delicious dinner and we got to know his sons Ryan and Kyle. My dad and I spent the night in the guestroom of the farm house listening to the frogs and water rolling down the river nearby. Very early in the morning, Uncle Paul woke us up to have breakfast. "The day starts at dawn on my farm," he said. After breakfast, I went to help Aunt Tina feed the chickens, while my dad went with Uncle Paul to take the sheep out to graze(吃草). I was impressed to see my dad and Uncle Paul riding horses. They looked really cool.
In the afternoon, I asked Uncle Paul if I could take a horse ride, and he said yes, as long as my dad went with me. I wasn’t going to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So, my dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on our horses, and headed slowly towards the mountains. "Don’t be late for supper," Uncle Paul cried, "and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!" "OK! " my dad cried back. After a while Uncle Paul and his farm house were out of sight. It was so peaceful and quiet and the colors of the brown rocks, the deep green pine trees, and the late afternoon sun mixed to create a magic scene. It looked like a beautiful woven(编织的) blanket spread out upon the ground just for us.
Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse.

Suddenly a little rabbit jumped out in front of my horse. My horse turned to the left to avoid the little rabbit as I held on tightly and tried not to fall. Then my dad turned around and shouted, “Hold on!” All of a sudden the horse began to run. My dad tried to keep up behind us. For a few minutes my horse slowed down to a trot and then stopped beside a river. I looked around and realized that we were way off the track.
We had no idea where we were and it got dark. Luckily the stars came out and gave us a little light when we were looking for the way to the farm house. After what must have been several hours, we suddenly heard the sound of sheep in the distance. My dad and I both rode our horses towards the sound of the sheep. As we got closer we saw Uncle Paul with a flashlight waving us over. What a night!

Tim recently graduated from the university and was looking for a job. After searching on the Internet,he found out that a famous online business company is recruiting a new office manager. Many candidates applied for the entry exam, but only one would be accepted in the end.
Tim noticed the resumes(简历) of other candidates and was surprised to see that some of them held a Master‘s Degree or even a Doctor‘s Degree. But Tim was only a Bachelor, and barely met the lowest requirement of the diploma. Tim felt a bit frustrated because he had no advantage over other candidates who were excellent students.
All the candidates entered the exam hall after handing up their resumes. Tim scanned through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him. Tim tried to calm down and focus on the questions themselves instead of their difficulty level. He started with the easiest ones and moved on to the more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators(监考人) in the hall, one of them was tall and thin, while the other invigilator was of the opposite: he was short and fat. They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates and were absent minded. After about 10 minutes, one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left. Some of the candidates took out notes and books, some of them brought tablets to search for answers, and some even called others for help. Tim looked back, and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too. The man winked to Tim,as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so. Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour, the invigilators returned to the exam hall. Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test. He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.

    Paragraph 1:
The test result was to Tim’s surprise.
    ________________________________________________________________________
    ________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Tim then understood everything that had happened.
    ________________________________________________________________________
    ________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
The test result was to Tim‘s surprise. After one week,Tim received an e-mail from the company saying that he was accepted as the new office manager. The next day,Tim went to the company and knocked on the door of the chief manager’s office. Before Tim said a word, the chief manager smiled at Tim and asked Tim whether he could remember that they had met before. Tim was very confused until the chief manager explained that he was the candidate sitting behind Tim in the test.
Tim then understood everything that had happened. The test was carefully arranged to test whether the candidates were honest even if no invigilator was there. The chief manager continued to say that their company was established based on honesty of the employees. The job of office manager would require the candidate to be independent and honest. In consideration of this, they found that Tim was the most suitable candidate to hold this position.

One weekend in July, Jane and her husband, Tom, had driven three hours to camp overnight by a lake in the forest. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I'm going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.
With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snowcapped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.
    “Tom!” she cried. “Help!”
No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him.
Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake.
As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.

    Paragraph 1:
But no more helicopters came and it was getting dark again. She had to stay alone in the forest for another cold night. Jane was so tired and disappointed, but she didn't lose heart. She knew Tom must be trying his best to search for her. She believed that the helicopter must have been called by Tom and was sure it would come back again tomorrow. She found a place near the stream and slept.
    Paragraph 2:
It was daybreak when Jane woke up. She walked along the stream, hoping to find a suitable place so that the helicopter could find her. She was so lucky that before long a big rock appeared, which was high above the trees. There she climbed and waited with her yellow blouse in hand for the helicopter to come again. To her great joy, she didn't wait long before she saw the helicopter in the sky. She waved hard with the yellow blouse and the helicopter quickly found her. She was right and it was Tom who called the helicopter and saved her.

Five years after his two young sons got lost from the U.K. to Toronto, their father is really excited to have them back in Manchester,England. On Aug.14,the Star broke the news to Abdul Abubakar that his children had been found safe and well in Hamilton—5,600 km from their home. “Oh my God,” he said when first told. “Is that true? Where are my children? Oh my God. Oh my God. I’m absolutely shaking. I want to hug them. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. My children!” Since 2010 he’d had no idea where they were living on or if they were even alive.
After years in the dark, his kids were found. Abubakar was finally reunited with his sons in Toronto at the end of December. “I was very happy. It was a great moment. I can’t even describe my feeling on that day. It was like a dream.” he said. “Even now we are together in Manchester,I still feel this dream is not real.” A short time after they went missing, the Manchester police called. Abubakar to say they had been found by mistake.
The moment he received the Star’s call,Abubakar began preparing to fly to Canada and hug his sons, but the long separation and age of his sons meant it would not be a simple reunion. Abubakar was given limited time to talk to his sons, who remained in Children’s Aid care in Hamilton. He thanked Canadians for their support, especially Children’s Aid and the Missing Kids Society of Canada, who helped him through the legal formalities.
“Talking to the boys again did not even feel real. It was amazing,” he told the Star after his first phone call with the children. His joy was mixed with sadness, because at that time, only the older son had recognized his father. It broke his heart,he said,to learn they had been given new names and did not recognize their birth names. “I can’t speak. I’m feeling so sad now,” he said in September.

A month ago,I met my fifth grade teacher. I had not seen Mrs.Elder since I invited her to my high school graduation. She was the only adult to join my living room dancing, and instead of feeling any embarrassed,I felt delighted. I have treasured that memory over the last dozen years, wondering if she was well. I figured she surely had retired, and as I began teaching full time I tried to put my finger on what it was that made her so important to me.
My mom ran into Mrs.Elder at University Place this fall. I say that like it is entirely natural, but I can only imagine running into my own students’ parents 20 years from now and having them remember me. What is it that makes her so memorable?
They exchanged email addresses, and a few days later I was delighted to get an email from her. She said she’d love to meet with me. So one December night,Barbara Elder came back into my life.
I searched her face and she seemed just as I remembered her when I was 11 and graduating from elementary school in Chapel Hill. Her voice was calm and happy and kind. That’s the memory and the experience!I realized I have carried with me all these years. Elder presented a small gift to my daughter.
“This is for you,” she told my 3yearold,her voice comforting to hear even as an adult. My daughter knelt with her and together they tore open the wrapping paper to get a brightly colored calendar.“Do you know what this is?” Mrs.Elder asked, and my daughter shook her head.“This is to help us count to Christmas,” she said,“and since today is the first of December,we get to find number one.”
    Paragraph 1:
As Mrs.Elder patiently explained its purpose,my daughter listened carefully and held it like a treasure.

    ________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
Rather than adding excitement to a busy season, the calendar added wonder.

    【答案】
As Mrs.Elder patiently explained its purpose,my daughter listened carefully and held it like a treasure. It seemed this was exactly where Mrs.Elder wanted to be,on a former student’sliving roomfloor, introducing a calendar to a 3 year old. I think this method helped her students unlock aspects in themselves, like wonder and joy,to become explorers of themselves and their learning. Watching Mrs.Elder with my daughter,I felt a sense of new hope; this is the kind of teacher I want to become. And it turns out Mrs.Elder still had something to teach me.
Rather than adding excitement to a busy season, the calendar added wonder. Each day my daughter remembered to ask me for her chocolate; together we talked about what day it was and she hunted for the number. When she found the hidden piece, she examined it in delight and showed me. I smiled back, and each day silently thanked my fifth grade teacher, whose kindness had unlocked joy in my life once again.

Where were you when you first heard My Heart Will Go On? You know that love song that took over the world in the late 1990s, the one that ruled radios and television screens, that trilled through the air when you rang your neighbour’s doorbell, or rang out of a Valentine’s Day musical card—the song we love to hate now because it is almost shameful to admit how much we listened to it in 1998. I’m no fan of the song, but I’ll tell you one thing—it saved my life.
I remember where I was when I heard the song, 13 years old, only a few weeks away from receiving my class eight report card. When my mother and I went to collect it from school, the skies were grey. On the left side of the report card was the failure of my choosing—Maths, Physics and Chemistry—on the bottom of the right hand side it said Not Promoted(不升级) in red ink. My mother, an English teacher in another Calcutta school, was too proud to beg the principal for the three marks I needed in Chemistry to be promoted to class nine. I walked along, thinking of the last song I was watching on MTV before we left for school. It was Dion’s all & shy; knowing hit My Heart Will Go On: “You have come to show you, go on...”
I was a fool to have ever thought that I could get away with not studying and watching MTV for hours on end. Till class eight, my father had refused to get a cable connection on the grounds that my brother and I would forever be glued to the screen, not study and fail the exams. The year after he gave in to his desire to watch late night football, I proved him right. I failed class eight because I was in love with the Backstreet Boys and would watch MTV all the time so that I wouldn’t miss a single video. That’s the whole truth and the band will never know the price I paid for my love.

    【答案】
Failing the year changed the world as I knew it. Overnight, it seemed as though everything had changed. I lost my friends in school because every conversation was filled with pity, theirs, and shame, mine. I was stopped from watching TV. At school, some teachers ignored my raising hands because I’d already studied the text before but failed. I used to love singing, now my life was filled with sadness.
Some months later, when the talent competition was announced in school, I was picked for the final round. On the day of the contest, I stood before the entire school, closed my eyes and sang the song. In that moment, I realized what “You have come to show you” meant to me—I had come to show me to my classmates and my teachers, to show them that I wasn’t just a girl who got held back, that failed, that I was good for something, that I was enough the way I was. Sometimes, when you sing like you mean the words, chances are you might win.

When his 13-year-old son came home late from school last week,John Morrissette figured he had just gone on “one of his usual walks”.It wasn’t until the next day that Morrissette found out his intellectually disabled boy, Michael, had been found in a Winnipeg garbage bin as temperatures dropped to -15°C.
Morrissette said his son had been beaten by two men, thrown in the Dumpster and left to freeze. He was found a few hours later by a woman who let him out. “I was very angry with the guys who would do this to my son,” Morrissette said in an interview Thursday. “You can see he’s a harmless child. He doesn’t talk much. He keeps to himself and two men have hurt him.”
The young teenager wasn’t seriously hurt, but Morrissette said he’s not letting him walk home alone anymore. The father’s faith in humanity is a little shaken. Morrissette said he couldn’t believe there are people out there who would pick on a young boy simply walking home from school. He’s only been able to get bits and pieces of what happened from Michael who is “too scared to talk about it”.
“We are sure we are living in a society that we all care about our children. But we feel so sad and angry with that. For the children like my son!We can’t help them? We can’t protect them?” said the father.
Nicole Langlois, who works nearby, said that she heard weak cries for help as she walked past the large garbage container, but was not sure where they were coming from. So a few hours later she went back again to the garbage container and tried to find what happened. To her great surprise, she found the boy sleeping and covered with garbage. “All he kept saying was, ‘Help. They pushed me in here,’” Langlois said. “I kept trying to talk to him and ask him who he is and he didn’t talk back to me.” As soon as she helped him out, he ran away and headed for home a few blocks away.
    Paragraph 1:
“Words can’t describe how grateful the family is to Langlois,” Morrissette said.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    Paragraph 2:
The family contacted police, who are investigating.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________
    【答案】
“Words can’t describe how grateful the family is to Langlois,” Morrissette said. “She’s my son’s angel,” he said. “I thank her every day. She is so kind that she rescued my son from the garbage container. And we have gained our faith in humanity again.” And the family decided not to let Michael walk home by himself because they are afraid the bad men hurt him again.
The family contacted police, who are investigating. Michael is not able to talk to the police what happened to him or who did this to him. The family is appealing to anyone who might have seen something. The family are sure there are many kind people in our society, where people will take good care of all the children, whether they are intellectually disabled or not. The police said they would try their best to find the bad men carrying out such terrible actions and punish them.

Five years after his two young sons got lost from the U.K. to Toronto, their father is really excited to have them back in Manchester,England. On Aug.14, the Star broke the news to Abubakar that his children had been found safe and well in Hamilton—5,600 km from their home.
Abubakar finally reunited with his sons in Toronto at the end of December. “I was very happy. It was a great moment. I can’t even describe my feeling on that day. It was like a dream.” He said. “Even now we are together in Manchester,I still feel this dream is not real.” A short time after they went missing, the Manchester police called Abubakar to say they had been found by mistake.
The moment he received the Star’s call, Abubakar began preparing to fly to Canada and hug his sons, but the long separation and age of his sons meant it would not be a simple reunion.
It was amazing.” He told the Star after his first phone call with the children. His joy was mixed with sadness, because at that time, only the older son had recognized his father .It broke his heart, he said, to learn they had been given new names and did not recognize their birth names. “I can’t speak. I’m feeling so sad now.” He said in September.

They’re very excited to go out and play with other kids, and they go swimming in the local pool.”
    Paragraph 2:
While he’s delighted to have them back, Abubakar is also still adjusting to the new situation. “They did not remember me at all...They are aware that their new names were fake, and they call each other their real name, and I call them on their real names. “Sometimes I forget myself and call them the names used in Toronto and they tell me,‘Dad,don’t call me that name, call us our real names.’” The happy father soon laughed for the mistakehe made.

Photos posted on the Instagram helped Winnipegger Jack Chester reunite with his birth father in Colombia,27 years after they last saw each other. The 31yearold located his father,Carlos Alberto Urrea,in the Colombian city of Armenia within the past week. There union came after Chester spotted photos of his dad on social media in August.
“It’s been a crazy experience and very fun and very exciting that I finally found him,” Chester said. Chester said he was born in Armenia,Colombia, but his mother, who is Canadian, brought him and his older brother to Winnipeg. The boys’ father joined them at one point early on but moved back to Colombia when Chester was four years old. He said they kept in touch for a while through Chester’s grandmother. “When my grandmother passed away,my father no longer had a number to contact us and we didn’t have one to contact him,so we kind of just lost contact at that point,” Chester explained. “That was around my seventh birthday,so it’s been 27 years since we’ve seen him and...24 years since he talked to my mother last.”
Then, over the August long weekend last year,Chester said he saw photos posted by Urrea on the Instagram. “Then using the location of the Instagram picture I found he was in Armenia and I chose to come out here,” he said.
Chester flew from Winnipeg to Colombia on Jan.5-6 with his friend Sean, who is recording the journey. He said on their first night in Armenia, they met a man in the area who offered to help them. “We sat down somewhere and had a beer and these people sitting right beside us turned around. One of them spoke English and he started asking us where we’re from and why we’re here, and Sean and I ...explain that we’re here so he could record me trying to find my dad and that I was born here,” he recalled. “The guy was excited about this story and said,‘I’d love to help you.’”

The group first visited a location in his father’s Instagram photos, but they couldn’t find him. They placed an advertisement in a local newspaper then went to eat at a restaurant. “Where we were eating was right beside another location of the photos on Instagram. Somebody came by and talked to the local who was helping us,” Chester recalled. “Then somebody had phoned my father because he lived around the corner and next thing we know he walked around the corner and I saw him...I ran across two streets, calling his name.”
Chester said his father told him he had tried to search for him and his brother, but both brothers had changed their last names. “He does remember me and my older brother and he told me that he’s been looking for us ever since we lost contact,” he said. Chester said his brother has since flown to Colombia to be reunited with Urrea as well. When asked how there union with his father will change his life,Chester said,“I got family everywhere,so it might lead to many more trips now.”

A Russian dog named Shavi was hit by a car and the driver left without offering help. She was saved by a woman named Nina who took her in,nursed her back to health, and then found her a home. But Shavi escaped from her new home and walked nearly 200 miles back to be with her guardian angel after two weeks.
Last winter,Shavi had been trying to survive as a street dog during the cold Russian winter when her life nearly ended. She was the victim of a hit & shy; and & shy; run, which resulted in two badly broken legs, among other injuries. She nearly froze to death, but two cyclists found her and brought her to a vet. They wanted to find Shavi a home to the public, and only one person responded—Nina.
The woman brought the injured dog back to her home, and nursed her back to health. She even taught Shavi how to walk again, and trained her to understand basic commands.
Shavi was a fighter, and on the first day after the surgery, wouldn’t even move herself on the blanket set out for her. Rather, she tried to make it outside, and was found lying on the door step. Nina looked after her and spent the next six months helping her recover. Some parts were easy; Shavi was a smart student, and easily learned commands. But she was terrified of strangers and cars, and it took a long time to get her accustomed to the outside world again.
Though she would have loved to have kept her, obstacles prevented Nina from doing so. Her apartment was too small, especially with three cats and two other rescue dogs, and her job and family commitments kept her from giving the new one as much attention as she needed.
As much as it pained her to do it,she searched for someone to take her in,but the only friends willing to do so lived 180 miles away. They lived out in the countryside, and Shavi would have more room to walk around. Nina believed the new owner was truly the best choice for her.

However, only days after arriving at her new home,Shavi went missing after she dug a hole under the fence.

    【答案】
However, only days after arriving at her new home,Shavi went missing after she dug a hole under the fence. Worried, her new owners called Nina to tell her their sad news—Shavi was once again living by herself out on the streets. Almost two weeks later,Nina was walking down the road when she was surprised at something touching her leg. It was Shavi!Nina burst into tears, hardly able to believe that this dog walked so far just to find her.
What was most fascinating about the reunion is that Shavi also moves others. Nina’s family had moved to a bigger apartment. “I’ve heard amazing stories about dogs’ loyalty, but I never imagined this sort of thing would ever happen to me. Even now,I can hardly believe this dog traveled such a long distance to find us,” said Nina,“I would never give this kind of friend away again. I never grow tired of repeating this—animals are the most devoted and loving creatures. They need our love and care.”

Latiff was the poorest beggar of the village, bagging everyday with a walking stick and ragged clothes and a plate. But he was considered by all to be the wisest man of town, perhaps not so much because of his intelligence, but by what he had lived.Every night he slept in the hall of a different house,in front of the town square. Every day he had a short rest under a different tree, with a widespread hand and a faraway look in his thoughts.
Hearing about his story, entertained, the king ordered Latiff to come and said,“If you answer my question,I will give you this gold coin.” Latiff looked at it,almost contemptuously, and said,“You can keep your coin, what will I do with it anyway? What is your question?” To the king’s surprise,Latiff’s response to the question that was bothering him for days was wise and creative.“Latiff,I need an adviser like you,”the king said.“I promise you that you will be respected and that you may leave whenever you want...” Latiff, after thinking a few minutes, accepted it.

On July 8,2017,eight members of a family in total, were enjoying an evening together at the beach in Panhandle,Florida. As the sun sank lower on the horizon, the two boys Noah,11,and Stephen,8—swam into the waves without the grown-ups noticing.Soon they realized that the ocean had pulled them into the sea. After trying and failing to swim back, they started waving and screaming for help. But the lifeguards had been off duty for the evening.
The boys had been struggling for several minutes when Jacky and Tabatha,a couple from Georgia, heard them. They dived into the water and soon reached the two brothers. But after a few minutes, they were all trapped in a rip current(离岸流)—a powerful one that could sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea! By then, some teenagers had heard the cry.One of the teens rushed into the water, grabbed Jacky, and pulled him back to shore.Meanwhile,Tabatha could feel herself being pulled farther out.She was already exhausted and beginning to feel desperate as she was trying to save both boys alone.
Onshore,Jacky was terrified.A man stopped.“What’s wrong?”asked Shaun, who was heading back to his car.“My wife is drowning!”Brittany said.Shaun immediately strode(大步跨)into the water. But several minutes later,a gaping 15 feet still lay between him and Tabatha and the boys.He knew that if he continued,he’d become another victim. He turned around to seek help.
It was about that time that Roberta, the boys’mother, returned from the bathroom and looked around for her children. She was shocked to spot them floating much farther out than they were allowed to go.She fought the waves to get to her screaming sons and the stranger who was trying to save them, but she quickly discovered it was nearly impossible to make headway in any direction.Looking around,Roberta sighed with relief to see some more people coming to help.

    【答案】
    Paragraph 1
When they tried in vain to rescue the brothers and Tabatha,a risky idea came to them.To keep themselves from losing their footing in the rip current, they began holding on to one another to form a human chain extending from the beach all the way out to the struggling and Tabatha. They stayed linked tightly and managed to ensure they were safe by making their feet firmly planted in the sand. However, that required more links—probably dozens of them.Shaun spotted other swimmers on the beach and shouted,“Don’t just stand there! Come and help.”
    Paragraph 2
By then, more swimmers had also noticed the group in trouble and rushed to join the human chain. One by one, link by link, total strangers walked into the waves and grasped one another by the wrists, determined that no one would die on that beach. At last, they made it and Tabatha and the two brothers were saved! “Those people on the beach are angels on earth,”said Roberta.“Whether it is the first person or the last person in the chain, they are all our heroes, who helped get our family out of trouble.

“There’s a mother in PICU (儿童重症监护病房) who wants to talk about a kit she received,” the nurse told me. “Something about it made her cry.”
I’ve been a child-life specialist at the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital since 2000. I help families understand diagnoses and treatment plans and manage the ups and downs that come with caring for a sick child. Tough talks with parents are part of the job, which still makes me feel nervous.
The kits the nurse was talking about were something I had recently introduced to the hospital:Comfort Kits from Guideposts. They were supposed to make a child’s experience here easier, not upsetting.
When I came across the kits at a conference, I fell in love with them. A treasure box of items designed not only to entertain kids, but to comfort and inspire them. There’s a coloring book,a stress ball,a CD of relaxing music,a hairy star named Sparkle,a journal and much more. I really believed these kits would help kids. I wished I hadn’t been mistaken.
At the patient’s room in PICU I saw a little girl, sleeping soundly, surrounded by tubes and machines. My eyes met her mother’s. The kit was open on her lap and tears were running down her cheeks.
“I’m Shannon. I manage the Child Life Department.” I said. “I’m sorry if the kit upset you. It’s a new item...”

    Paragraph 1:
The mother shook her head. “This has been one of the worst days of my life.

【答案】The mother shook her head. “This has been one of the worst days of my life. I felt so scared and alone so that I couldn’t eat and drink anything that day. For a while, I was handed this box. I know it’s for my daughter, but it’s just the comfort I needed. I longed to express my sincere gratitude to you.” I replied in a soft voice, “ I am delighted that you are keen on this box. You could keep it by your side.” In the meantime, I held her hand tightly and warmly in order to convey the sympathy.
With that I knew Comfort Kits belonged here. We’ve been using them for almost three years now. Each child who’s admitted to the hospital receives one. Every day I see kids coloring, journaling, playing with Sparkle. But as this mom showed me Comfort Kits aren’t just for kids. The hope they bring, which can be in short supply in hospitals sometimes,is felt by the whole family.

About ten years ago,a young and very successful businessman named Josh was traveling down a Chicago neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his shiny,black,12 cylinder Jaguar XKE,which was only two months old.
He was watching for kids rushing out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed,no child came out,but a brick sailed out and—WHUMP!—it hit the Jag’s shin black side door! Immediately Josh stopped the car, jumped out, seized the kid and pushed him up against a parked car. He shouted at the kid,“What was that all about and who are you? That’s my new Jag,that brick you threw is going to cost you a lot of money. Why did you throw it? ”
“Please,mister,please...I’m sorry!I didn’t know what else to do!” begged the youngster. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop!” Tears were streaming down the boy’s face as he pointed around the parked car. “It’s my brother, mister” he said. “He rolled off the curb(路沿) and fell out of his wheel chair and I can’t lift him up.” Sobbing, the boy asked the businessman,“Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? 【答案】Moved beyond words, the young businessman tried hard to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. Straining,he lifted the young man back into the wheelchair and took out his handkerchief and wiped the scrapers and cuts, checking to see that everything was going to be OK. He then watched the younger brother push him down the sidewalk toward their home.
It was a long walk back to the black, shining 12 cylinder Jaguar XKE—a long and slow walk. Josh never did fix the side door of his Jaguar. He kept the dent(凹痕) to remind him not to go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at him to get his attention. Feel for the bricks of life coming at you.

“The day starts at dawn on my farm,” he said.
“Don’t be late for supper,” Uncle Paul cried, “and keep to the track so that you don’t get lost!” “OK!” my dad cried back.

Seeing this, I was surprised. Meanwhile, my horse got frightened, jumped up, and ran around wildly. I held the rope tightly in case I might fall off. My dad was chasing after me, keeping me in sight. Some time later, my horse stopped, panting, and I woke up from panic. Looking around, I saw my father right behind me.

We had no idea where we were and it got dark. We couldn’t get back along the original track. We immediately thought of the police. My father telephoned the police station, but it couldn’t get through. It was so far away that there was no signal. Just then, Uncle Paul came riding with a group of people. He laughed with joy when he saw us safe. He said he had installed a satellite positioning system under my horse’s belly. Through it, he knew that we had got lost and where we were.

On a bright, warm July afternoon,Mac Hollan,a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on,and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled(骑行) along alone,he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man,that’s a big dog!”he thought. But when he looked to the side,he saw instantly that it wasn’t a dog at all,but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac’s heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars,he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac’s relief,it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later,it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac’s bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again,it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶).
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to slow down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill,he’d be easy caught up and the wolf’s teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment,Paul and Becky were driving their car on their way to Alaska.

    Paragraph 1:

    Paragraph 2:

    【答案】Paragraph 1:
The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Mac rushed down from his bicycle and frantically waved at the passengers inside the car for help. The young couple inside the car jumped out to help him. They saw the wolf charging towards them about to attack. They quickly helped Mac climb into the car and rushed into their front seats, locking the doors.
After his terrifying adventure,Mac felt relieved when he reached home safe to his loving family.

“It is a mystery how he managed to find the place,” she said.
Cemetery director Hector Baccega says he and his staff have begun feeding and taking care of Capitan.
“He turned up here one day,all on his own,and started wandering all around the cemetery until he eventually found the tomb of his master,” Baccega said.

There was once a beautiful town and a couple of lovers would often stay together on the top of the mountain enjoying the sunrise and by the sea appreciating the sunset. Everyone who knew them could not help envying them for their happy love.
But one day,the man was severely injured and lying in bed in hospital for several days without any consciousness. The woman guarded him by the bed in daytime, calling his name nonstop while at night, she would go to the church and pray to God until her tears ran up.
A week passed by and the man was still sleeping. One day,God was finally moved by her love and persistence and would like to do her a special favor.
God said,“I can help your lover recover quickly on the condition that you should promise to be a butterfly for three years. Do you agree with the deal ?” She said excitedly and firmly,“Yes,I do! I won’t regret doing that.”
The next day,the woman became a beautiful butterfly, flying hurriedly to the hospital. It turned out that the man came to his consciousness and waked up,talking with a doctor. She could not hear what they were talking about because she could not fly into the house. What she could do was watch her beloved through the windows helplessly.
Another spring came and the butterfly was in a hurry to fly back to see the man, only to realize that there was a pretty lady standing by him. At that moment, she was so shocked that she almost fell down from the sky. She could hardly believe her eyes.
People were talking about that the man was seriously ill during Christmas and that the pretty and cute female doctor took good care of him and that finally they fell in sweet love.

On the last day of the third year when the deal between God and the butterfly was almost over, the man held a wedding with his girlfriend. The church was crowded with people. The butterfly flew into the church quietly and rested on the shoulder of God,listening to the man’s promise to the bride and seeing him put a ring on her finger and kiss her sweetly. The butterfly was sad in tears.
God also felt sad and sighed to the butterfly,“Do you regret for what you have done?” The butterfly cleaned her tears on the face,“No.” God felt a bit relieved and said,“Tomorrow you can become human again.” But she shook her head and said,“No,I want to be a butterfly for the rest of my life...”Then the butterfly would stay together with her lover forever. On the top of the mountain, she seemed to enjoy the sunrise and the sunset happily together with them.

Jack and Paisley were sitting face to face.At this moment, the landlord came in and asked, “Are you sure you do not rent the house anymore?” He kept silent and she only shook her head. They were going to divorce, so it was obvious that they would not continue renting the house any more.
Then the landlord began examining the house. After looking around, he screamed, “Damn God! See how you have ruined my house? The walls are full of nails! How could I rent the house to others?”
Jack said, “The room is too small and can hardly accommodate all loads of our stuff. So we could only hang them on the walls.” The landlord did not listen to him and turned around up to the floor.
Paisley began looking around her familiar room. Four years ago, she became his bride here. On the night of their marriage, he felt deeply guilty to her, saying, “I feel so sorry to you for having you live in this small room. In the future I will earn a lot of money to buy our own house.”
The room was only 13 square meters with two nails on the wall next to the door, one for her to hang her bag and the other for hanging umbrellas. At that time, she threw all her stuff such as her bag and umbrella on the floor once she entered the room, staring at the whole mess and feeling terribly upset.
There were three nails on the left wall, on which hung his clothes yesterday. After he lived in the room, he removed all the clothes boxes and bought her a desk in the spared room because he knew she loved writing and drawing.
There were four nails on the right wall that were used to fix their wedding photo frame. But now there were only four nails without the frame. She still remembered he got hurt on his fingers when trying to drive the nails home.It was her who pushed him to receive an injection against tetanus(破伤风).

【答案】The landlord tried to pry the nails out when complaining at the same time. After the nails were removed, the walls were left with numerous holes. All of a sudden, she sprang from her seat and exclaimed,“Stop!Stop! We will continue renting the house and won’t move away before we buy our own!”Jack looked at her with great surprise, and then turned round, tears over his face.Paisley finally came to understand that their marriage was like a wall full of numerous holes. But if all the nails were still in their own places, the wall was still undamaged and reliable. But in the past, what she saw was only those annoying nails.
They hung all the things back to the wall.Jack asked Paisley,“Are you really willing to lead a tough life with me?” She patted away the ashes on hands and looked at the walls with loads of stuff on them satisfactorily, saying,“Yes! For me,it is not a suffering to live.”

Sometimes your biggest weakness can become your biggest strength. Everyone has his own weakness, but God always offers his unexpected strength in his misfortune. We’d make full use of it just like the girl below,we are certainly fortunate to be given other blessings from Heaven.
The story of one girl who decided to study judo(柔道) despite the fact that she had lost her left arm in a car accident.
The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. The girl was doing well. So she couldn’t understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one move.
“Instructor,” the girl finally said,“Shouldn’t I be learning more moves? It isn’t far enough to learn just this.”
“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know,” the instructor replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training. She didn’t dare to complain about anything and it was apparent that since her teacher said so,she had to follow without any unhappiness.
Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first tournament. Surprising herself, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged. The girl skillfully used her one move to win the match. Still amazed by her success, the girl was now in the finals.
This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl appeared to be over-matched. Concerned that the girl might get hurt, the referee called a time out. She was about to stop the match when the instructor interrupted.
“No,” the instructor insisted,“Let her continue.”
Soon after the match started again, her opponent made a critical mistake: she dropped her guard. Instantly, the girl used her move to hold her opponent tightly. The girl had won the match and the tournament. She was the champion.

On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match.

    【答案】
On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the girl took courage to ask what was really on her mind. “Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one move?Is there any magic power about it? Is my opponent much weaker than me?Please tell me the secret.” The judo instructor and his pupil talked excitedly as walking forward. She couldn’t wait to know the answer, but the instructor appeared unhurriedly. Finally he opened his mouth.
“Two reasons account for that you won,” the teacher answered.“First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm. It is your biggest weakness that makes you win the match. As a proverb says,‘Every coin has two sides.’ Making full use of your strength is your achievement. Please remember that in no case will you give up especially in trouble. God is fair to everyone.”

She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy from the ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.
Today she was sure there would be something. Myra wouldn’t forget her mother’s birthday, even if she seldom wrote at other times. Of course, Myra was busy. The old lady was proud of Myra. Her husband had been made Mayor, and Myra herself had got a medal for her work.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps—perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday.
Even if Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of color brightened her cheeks. She was excited—like a child. She would enjoy her day.
Yesterday Mrs. Morrison had given the flat an extra clean, and today she had brought a card and a bunch of flowers when she came to do the breakfast. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. The little boy, Johnnie, had been up with a packet of mints, and said he wouldn’t go out to play until the post had come. “I guess you’ll get lots and lots of presents.” he said.
What would she like? A pair of slippers perhaps. Or a new coat. A coat would be lovely. Blue’s such a pretty color. Jim had always liked her in blue. Or a table lamp. Or a book, a travel book, with pictures, or a little clock, with clear black numbers. So many lovely things.

    Paragraph 1:
She stood by the window, watching. The postman turned round the corner on his bicycle. Her heart beat fast. Johnnie had seen him too and ran to the gate. After a while Johnnie ran up and knocked at her door. “Granny, granny, ” he shouted, “I’ve got your post.” He gave her four envelopes. Three were unsealed cards from old friends. The fourth was sealed, in Myra’s writing.“No parcel, Johnnie?” “No, granny.” Maybe the parcel was too large to come by letter post. That was it. It would come later by parcel post. She must be patient.
    Paragraph 2:
Almost unwillingly she tore the envelope open. Folded in the card was a piece of paper. Written on the card was a message under the printed Happy Birthday—Buy yourself something nice with the cheque, Myra and Harold. The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. Slowly the old lady bent to pick it up. Her present, her lovely present. With trembling fingers she tore it into little pieces.

    The offering
Just as they were getting ready to leave the street corner, they noticed a man walking toward them.He was obviously a wealthy man—they could tell that from the finely tailored business suit he was wearing and the gold watch chain that decorated his left pocket.
The first beggar whispered to the second with excitement,“He’s coming our way!”
The two tried not to look directly at the man as he stepped closer to them, but they couldn’t help gazing up with expectation as he reached into his pocket and took something out.
“Thunk” was the only sound they heard as what looked_like a piece of hard candy, wrapped doubly in tissue paper, hit each of their waiting hats. The rich man turned and continued on his way,not making a backward glance.
“How disgusting (令人作呕的)!” said the first beggar,as soon as the rich man was out of sound range.“He could have easily left us a few coins or a spare bill, but he tricks us with a piece of rock candy.”
He looked at the wrapped offering with disgust.“Who does he think we are—children? There’s no way we can even eat this—we have no teeth.”
The beggar picked up the object with the very tips of his fingers and threw it into the gutter(臭水沟).He watched as it floated a few yards in the stream of muddy water and disappeared into the drain at the end of the street. Then,he gathered up his things and walked away.
The second beggar looked down at the morsel in his hat, then at his departing friend. His first impulse (冲动) was to throw the donation in the trashcan under the street light.

The beggar hesitated for a moment, then he decided to open it. He declared aloud,“Who cares? He wanted me to have it anyway.I might as well enjoy it now.” With that,he unwrapped the white tissue paper, but to his surprise, there was no hard rock candy inside. Instead, into his fingers fell a shiny white pearl worth thousands of dollars.

Three years seems like a long time to remember the name of a mere acquaintance. I have forgotten the name of an old lady, who was a customer on the paper routine my hometown when I was a twelve-year-old and shy boy. Yet it remains in my memory that she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I shall never forget.
On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were throwing stones onto the roof of the old lady’s house from a spot near her backyard. The object of our play was to observe how the stones changed to missiles (导弹,发射物) as they rolled to the roof’s edge and shot out into the yard like comets falling from the sky. I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight not for the roof but for a small window. At the sound of broken glass, we knew we were in trouble.
I was too scared about getting caught that first night to be concerned about the old lady with the broken window in winter. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn’t been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortune. She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to act comfortably in her presence.
I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars that I calculated would cover the cost of her window. I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it.

She thanked me for the paper and gave me a bag of cookies she had made herself. I thanked her and went on to eat the cookies as I continued my route.
    Paragraph 2:
After several cookies, I felt an envelope and pulled it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was surprised deeply. Inside were the seven dollars and a short note that said, “I’ m proud of you.”

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The creeks and streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn’t see some rain soon,we would lose everything. It was on this day that I learned the true lesson of sharing and witnessed the only miracle I have ever seen in my life.
I was making lunch for the family when I saw my 6yearold son,Billy, walking toward the woods. I could only see his back. He wasn’t walking with his usual way. He was obviously walking with great effort, trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods,he came running out again toward the house. I went back to make sandwiches, thinking that whatever he had been doing was completed. Moments later, however,he was once again walking in that unusual way toward the woods. This activity went on for an hour. Finally I couldn’t take it any longer. I walked out of the house and followed him.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill the water he carried. I sneaked(偷偷地走) close as he went into the woods. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He might have a much higher purpose,I thought. As I came closer,I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them,at the sight of which I almost screamed for him to get away. A huge buck(雄鹿) was dangerously close. But the buck did not threaten him nor even move as Billy knelt down. And then I saw a tiny baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from thirst and heat, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water in my boy’s hands.

When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house.

    Paragraph 1:
When the water was gone,Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to a tap. Billy opened it with his small hand and a small trickle of water began to run out. He knelt there, letting the drip slowly fill up his “cup”.Then he ran quickly to the thirsty animals.
    Paragraph 2:
And now I knew what’s going on. The week before,he had made the same trouble with our horses, which caused him a lecture from his father about the importance of not wasting water. That should be the reason he didn’t ask me for help. It took much time for the drops to fill his hands. His eyes were filled with tears, saying “I’m not wasting”.Now,I let him attend the baby deer alone for it was his job while I just stood on the edge of the woods watching.
