Where would you like to go for your New Year vacation? Here are the best ski resorts of comfort and joy during the holidays and the rest of the ski season.

    Kitzbühel, Austria

The most prized downhill on the ski racing calendar, Kitzbühel also attracts a host of festive fans with its fairy lights, and performances of jazz bands. By day, you can enjoy 230 kilometers of runs over the Kitzbühel Alps, and fill up on hearty Tyrolean classic foods.

    Val Gardena, Italy

This attractive valley is a New Year present waiting to be unwrapped. The three towns that make up Val Gardena---busy Ortisei, peaceful Santa Cristina and the higher Selva---traditionally go big on the festive season, combining their Italian, Austrian and Ladin heritage (遗产). The 175-kilometer skiing takes place below the towering Sassolungo mountain.

    Alpbach, Austria

Alpbach is often considered Austrias prettiest village. Low at 1,000 meters, it may not always have snow on the ground. There are 91 kilometers of runs stretching up to 2,025 meters with a beautiful spread of mountain huts.

    Stowe, Vermont

Stowe will celebrate its 85th winter of lift service this season and its a fine place to enjoy New Year. The skiing, up the road at Stowe Mountain Resort, offers options for all levels through forests from Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont.

A mild-mannered cat by day, at night Rusty was just the opposite. Often, Bill and I would lie in bed quarreling over whether we should let it out to wander in the dark or put up with another sleepless night.

So, instead, we lay in the dark each noisy night and wondered what damage Rusty would do. And always in the morning, if I had forgotten to put the butter in the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.

Something had to give. Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, Do it. My reservations were such, however, that it took me several weeks and the loss of nearly a pound of butter to decide we didnt have much choice.

That night, I put Rusty on his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head. Then I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water. Rusty loved jumping into a damp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across the kitchen floor. According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats used to jumping into your sink wont do it again if they jump in and find a couple of inches of water.

Next, I cleared the cupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a fork to go with each. According to the article, you should support a cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter, he will knock down the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens next will stop him from doing it a second time.

Everything in place, I slipped onto our bed quietly, waiting. Suddenly, there came an awfully loud noise of metal. A chain reaction of crashes next. Finally, Rusty rounded the corner in the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot of our bed, trembling under our cover. His paws were wet. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired.

    24. Which of the following best describes Rusty at night?

       A. Cold-blooded.  B. Adorable.   C. Good-tempered.  D. Troublesome.

    25. What did Bill mean by saying Do it?

      A. To leave the cat outdoor.      B. To give the cat a lesson.

      C. To reserve food for the cat.      D. To give the cat more butter.

    26. What did the writer do before she went to bed that night?

      A. Filled the sink with water.          B. Laid two traps for the cat.

      C. Covered the counter with sheets.    D. Cleaned the kitchen thoroughly.

    27. How did the author probably feel about the outcome of her effort?

      A. Satisfied.   B. Disappointed.   C. Anxious.   D. Regretful.

    C

In May 2012, Australias Macquarie Dictionary and the McCann Advertising Agency gathered a group of language experts to name a phenomenon common in the age of the smartphone. They called the phenomenon phubbing, and defined (定义) it as the act of snubbing (无视) someone in a social setting by looking at your phone instead of paying attention. Its not the usual way words begin to exist.

A month later, the first example of phubbing in a major newspaper appeared in a letter to the editor of The Age, published in Melbourne. Since then, the word has appeared in various media the world over. Phubbing has yet to be fully adopted in the U.S., but we have collected some evidence of it in use.

On 29 September 2015, James A. Roberts wrote in the Huffinington Post, In the present case, phubbing is a combination of the words phone and snubbing. To be phubbed is to be snubbed by someone using their cell phone while in your company. The phubb could be an interruption of your conversation with someone when he or she uses their cell phone or is distracted by it (steal glances when they think youre not looking) instead of paying attention to you. Maybe worse, youve been phubbed if someone used their cell phone instead of communicating with you while staying close to you. Oh, the shame.

The meaning and various forms of the word have yet to settle out. Is it phubbing if youre staring at your tablet instead of your phone? Is the singular noun (and the base form of the verb) spelled phubb, as in the example above, or phub, as in some other sources? These are the sorts of questions well need answers to before were ready to consider phubbing and its relations for entry. In the meanwhile, you can of course use phubbing if you feel the need. It seems we all do these days.

    28. What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about phubbing?

    A. Its usage.   B. Its birth.   C. Its influence.  D. Its definition.

    29. What may phubbing probably lead to according to James A. Roberts?

    A. Obvious embarrassment in life.    B. Heavy reliance on cellphones.

      C. Complete ignorance by your friends.    D. Permanent breakup of relationship.

    30. What can we learn from the last paragraph about the word phubb?

       A. It arouses heated arguments.     B. It proves to be settled.

       C. Its not included in a dictionary.      D. Its not difficult to understand.

    31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

      A. Where Phubbing Leads Us?

      B. Why Phubbing Ruins Our Life?

      C. What Makes Phubbing Commonly Seen?

      D. How Phone Snubbing Becomes Phubbing?

    D

An individual from an unknown hominid (原始人类) species walked across a field of wet, volcanic ash in what is now East Africa around 3.66 million years ago, leaving behind a handful of footprints.

Those five ancient footprints, largely ignored since they were partly unearthed at Tanzanias Laetoli site in 1976, show features of upright walking by a hominid, a new study finds. Researchers had previously considered them hard to classify, possibly produced by a young bear that took a few steps while standing. But the latest analysis refutes that suggestion.

McNutt, DeSilva, who started the new investigation as a Dartmouth College graduate student, and their colleagues fully dug out and cleaned the five Laetoli footprints in June 2019. Then they measured, photographed and 3-D scanned the ancient tracks. McNutts group focused on two footprints that were particularly well-preserved. Foot shapes, sizes, and walking characteristics of the Laetoli individual differed in various ways from those of other hominid individuals at the same site. The prints also didnt match those from modern black bears and modern chimps (黑猩猩) walking upright.

The Laetoli individual possessed a wider, more chimplike foot than humans, the researchers say. Its big toe stuck out slightly from the second toe (脚趾), but not to the degree observed in chimps. On one step, the Laetoli individuals left leg crossed in front of the right leg, leaving a left footprint directly in front of the previous track. People may cross-step in this way when trying to regain balance. And bears and chimps assume a relatively wide standing due to knee and other bone arrangements that prevent them from walking like the Laetoli individual and probably from cross-stepping, the scientists say.

Given that only two of the ancient footprints are complete enough to analyze thoroughly, the possibility that a chimp other than a hominid made the Laetoli footprints cant be ruled out, says William Harcourt-Smith, a scientist at Lehman College. But evidence of cross-stepping is enough to prove that it was a hominid track maker, he says.

    32. What does the underlined word refutes in Paragraph 2 mean?

    A. Objects to.    B. Supports.   C. Puts forward.       D. Criticizes.

    33. Why do researchers think the footprints were unlike those of bears or chimps?

    A. They are less chimplike.     B. They have toes sticking out.

    C. They show relatively wide standing.  D. They possess features of cross-stepping.

    34. What does William think of the new research finding?

    A. Its convincing.      B. Its challenging.

    C. Its confusing.             D. Its conflicting.

    35. What is the purpose of the text?

      A. To describe a major event.       B. To share a new discovery.

      C. To introduce an unknown species.     D. To settle a huge disagreement.

As I was hiking, I started to reflect on how hiking is similar to other aspects of my life.    40   . It reminded me of my struggles in my classes and the difficulties I had to overcome. I spotted that the process of learning isnt always the most fun, but the fulfillment after seeing how much I had finished just increases the thirst for knowledge, causing me to long for more learning. Looking down at the mountain I was content but never fully satisfied. Having considered a lot, I was determined to pursue the summit (山顶).

We three were running down the path, shouting and laughing when our dog Rubby suddenly stopped in the distance. He turned around, eyeing us, with his tail swinging up and down.

My little brother Toby immediately sped up and rushed to where Rubby was. He bent down and picked up something and ran back to us.

It was a bunch of keys. We gathered in a circle, examining the keys one by one, hoping to find some useful information about its owner. There were 3 keys, a house key, a mail key and a car key and a unique key fob (吊坠), very likely designed specially.

Gosh, the owner might be in great trouble. My sister sighed. She was right. We once lost our keys. Although we had an extra house key, it took our parents quite a long time to get a new mail key, let alone there was a car key.

    Who might have lost them?

After many wild guesses, we finally drew a conclusion: It might belong to someone in our neighborhood as only our neighbors wandered into the woods for a walk. But it was still impossible to figure out who it was. We had a very big neighborhood.

The owner might come back to look for them. Toby reminded.

So we decided to stay where we were, keeping a watchful eye on all passers-by. Our little dog ran in circles of excitement that we stayed so long in the wild. We remained in the woods for two hours, asking everyone we came across whether they lost their keys, but in vain.

It seemed we had to give up. But my sister wouldnt, saying that she just couldnt stop picturing the owner brushing aside tall grasses hoping to find the lost keys. How anxious and upset the owner would be!

I took a look at the bunch of keys again and quite by accident, found the key fob had the alarm button, Look! If we press the alarm button, close enough of course, we can set off the owners car alarm…”

    Thats brilliant.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右:
