Tips for a Successful Video Job Interview

As hiring becomes global and more employees work remotely, video interviews have become common. For hiring managers, they’re a way to quickly conduct first-round interviews, save on transportation costs, and get the interview process started much faster than scheduling in-person interviews.

Review the following tips to make sure you ace this type of interview.

    What to Expect

During a virtual interview, the video platform will vary depending on the company, but a ResumeGo survey reports that Zoom is the most commonly used interviewing platform (72%), followed by Skype (43%) and Google Hangouts (27%).

In most cases, everything will go smoothly, but it will be less stressful if you practice beforehand.

•Do a trial run a day or two before the interview.

•Check your webcam and any headset or microphone as if you were going to do the actual interview.

•Your camera should be at eye level. A poorly placed camera can result in double chins or odd shadows.

•Regardless of location, make sure that you send any materials (resume, portfolio, etc. ) that the company needs in advance.

    What to Wear

The ResumeGo survey reports that most employers prefer that job candidates wear business casual(便装), but many don’t have a preference. If you are unsure of what level of formality is expected, it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed.

    During the Video Interview

Make sure the table and your surroundings are clean and neat. You don’t want to distract (干扰)the interviewer. If you’re interviewing in your home, make sure that you are in a quiet space with no barking dogs, children, music, or other sounds. As well, turn off your phone and any alerts on your computer to avoid getting thrown off by emails or instant messages during the interview.

Make eye contact, and remember, that means looking at the camera(and not the picture-in-picture image of yourself).

    1. What advantage do video job interviews have over in-person ones?

    A. Personalized and time-saving. B. Efficient and money-saving.

CNo face-to-face communication. D. Simplified interview procedure.

2Which of the following subtitles best fits the box in the text?

    A. Trial Video Process B. Check Your Technology

    C. Advance Planning D. Have Materials Ready

    3. Which of the following statements is true?

    A. Dress casually if you are unsure of what to wear.

    B. The ideal background is tidy, quiet and distraction-free.

    C. Google Hangouts ranks lowest among available video platforms.

    D. Look at yourself on the screen while responding to interviewers.

    【答案】1. B2. C3. B

    B

Michelle Phan says she had to quit making her popular “makeup and beauty” YouTube videos because she was burned out.

“It became harder and harder for me to pretend to be happy” she says. “And I had become unpleasant with my relationships and friendships. I was on the edge of collapse.”

As a so-called social media influencer or creator, she says she needed time off from the constant pressure to upload ever more content, and try to chase (追求) more and more views and likes.

But what exactly is a social media influencer?

There is no hard and fast definition, but in essence it is someone who has enough followers on social media, and typically YouTube, Instagram or TikTok, that they can change it into money.

The income comes from two main sources—a share of the advertising revenue (收入), and deals with companies to promote their bands.

While there is potentially big money to be made, Ms. Phan says that creators “need to know when to draw the line, and take care of themselves” rather than post all the time.

This concern is echoed by media analyst Rebecca McGrath, of research firm Mintel, who says that some influencers are trying to chase revenues so much that they post “even if they don’t have anything new to create or say”.

Ms. Phan also warns that you have to be able to deal with online trolls writing horrible things below your videos. “You’re also exposed to hateful comments, which I think people aren’t prepared for.”

Despite the downsides to being an influencer—the need to always put up more videos or posts, and the likely online abuse—a great many people would like to be one. It can be a fun and profitable way to earn a living.

Yet psychologist Stuart Duff of Pearn Kandola warns that you need a certain personality to hope to be successful at it

“Successful influencers will relate to others, tell great stories, have a strong, unique brand, and stick to the message. They will have great passion for what they want to say, and always seem to know what their audience wants to hear.”

    4. Why did Michelle Phan stop putting up more videos?

    A. Her videos were not as popular. B. She became the envy of friends.

    C. She was in poor physical health. D. She felt like running out of ideas.

    5. What docs the underlined “this concern” in Paragraph 8 refer to?

    A. Influencers make potentially big money.

    B. Influencers go too far in chasing revenues.

    C. Influencers often suffer from poor health.

    D. Influencers are always posting new content.

    6. What can be inferred from the text?

    A. A successful influencer should be passionate and empathetic.

    B. A social media influencer refers to the person who has many fans.

    C. Exposure to online game violence discourages some influencers.

    D. Influencers make money mainly by advertising and running companies.

    7. What does the text mainly talk about?

    A. How one can make a successful influencer.

    B. Why Ms. Phan quit being an influencer.

    C. Pressures and rewards of being an influencer.

    D. Warnings against pursuing instant wealth.

    4~7题答案】

    【答案】4. D5. B6. A7. C

    C

English is the international language of science, but most of the world’s scientists speak it as a second language. We shoulder an extra career challenge: Not only must we gain a command of science, but we must also be able to write in a foreign language to communicate that science.

My mother tongue is Hebrew. I’m now a researcher at Monash University. There are six people on my research team, five of whom are non-native English speakers. Writing highly technical English is crucial to our science. Our topics embrace cell biology, materials science and chemistry, so our text must make sense to both non-experts and experts.

To me, English is suitable as an international language in a number of ways. On the surface, it’s easy enough to convey basic meanings when conducting trade, business and tourism, as well as on social media. In most contexts, it doesn’t matter if you misuse “the” or “-ing,” or get the word order wrong. Although the spelling is chaotic, once you get a feel for the typical patterns, it’s not too hard.

But when meanings are complex and technical, precision is a must. Then, English becomes a difficult beast to wrestle with.

The Australian poet Clive James once called English “big and baggy.” I can’t disagree. The vocabulary is large. Furthermore, the grammar is extraordinarily flexible, leaving us often confusing. There lies the problem: Such rich language makes it easy to produce long writings of questionable quality.

Worse still, we outsiders to English are likely to have been taught to use complicated wording and long sentences to show our authority on a topic. However, English is the opposite: The language is at its most elegant when plain and simple. But simplicity is hard in English!

Another shock to me was the importance English speakers place on front-ending their messages. In many languages, you might expect readers to stay with the text throughout. In English, however, I’ve developed healthy fear that my readers will skim-read unless I state the essence at the opening of a paragraph, then walk backwards while explaining it.

My language teacher says that working with me makes him reflect on English in ways he wouldn’t otherwise. Full disclosure: he read this piece, and made a few helpful suggestions.

    8. Why does the author think English is suitable as an international language?

    A. It can be easily used to get basic meanings across.

    B. It has relatively simple grammar and spelling rules.

    C. It is spoken by the majority of the world’s population.

    D. Its huge vocabulary helps express complex meanings.

    9. What’s the function of Paragraph 3?

    A. To declare the importance of English

    B. To illustrate English is easy to learn

    C. To give opinions about the status of English

    D. To provide a contrast to technical English

    10. What does the underlined phrase “front-ending their messages” in Paragraph 7 refer to?

    A. skimming for the main idea of the text

    B. expressing ideas at the end of the text

    C. presenting key messages at the beginning

    D. having a thorough understanding of the text

    11. The author mentions the challenges scientists have as non-native speakers except ______.

    A. how to convey complex and technical meanings precisely

    B. how to produce professional writings in simple English

    C. how to establish their authority in the field of science

    D. how to make scientific writings accessible to non-experts

    8~11题答案】

    【答案】8. A9. D10. C11. C

    D

You are out with a few friends after a long day at the office. You are so relieved to be able to speak freely at last, with as much slang (俚语) as you like. Then another friend joins your group, contributing humorless and grammatically perfect sentences to the conversation. Are you at ease?

If you can imagine yourself in this situation, you can understand how a lot of young people feel when they receive a text with a big period (句号).

For the younger generation, using proper punctuation (标点) in an informal context like texting can give an impression of formality that borders on rudeness. The message-ending period establishes a certain distance. The punctuation is polite when you are speaking to someone older than you or above you at work, but unpleasant among friends. To put it simply, including a formality in informal communication makes people uncomfortable.

Think of a mother using her son’s full name when issuing a serious ultimatum (最后通牒). Or of an upset lover speaking to a partner in a cool, professional tone. People gain and express interpersonal comfort through unpolished self-presentation, and acting (or writing) too formally comes off as cold or distant.

It is also worth noting that more of our informal communication is digital now than ever before, so texting etiquette (礼仪) carries at least as much weight as speaking tone. It is generally accepted that many texters, especially young people, see end-of-message periods as unnecessary. It is clear that a message has ended regardless of its punctuation, because each message is in its own bubble. Thus, the message break has become the default (默认) full-stop.

This pressure to get one’s thoughts across increases when they are aware that the people that they are texting know they are typing—as with speech, both parties in the conversation are responsible for maintaining it To avoid keeping their friends waiting anxiously, therefore, texters send out single, often unpunctuated phrases rather than full sentences.

Adapting to this new custom may be difficult for older texters. However, this is not the first time that writers have repurposed standard punctuation. The new customs surrounding the period are just one episode in a centuries-long history of grammatical exploration.

    12. The two examples in Paragraph 4 are used to show ______.

    A. using punctuation is practically rude

    B. formality can create a certain distance

    C. period is proper for elders and lovers to use

    D. informal communication causes discomfort

    13. Why has the end-of-message period become unnecessary to young people?

    A. More informal communication is digital now than before.

    B. The message in its own bubble carries more significance.

    C. They use unpunctuated sentences to keep a conversation going.

    D. They want to escape the pressure of communicating their ideas.

    14. What’s the author’s attitude to the trend of changing punctuation standards?

    A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Opposed. D. Acceptable.

    15. What can be the best title for the passage?

    A. No more periods when texting. B. Periods or not, that’s a choice.

    C. Standard punctuation when texting. D. Texting etiquette among generations.

    Rise of the robots

The word “robot” was coined in 1920 by the Czech playwright Karel Capek, who imagined artificial, fully functional servants. For most of their history, however, robots have been silent, inelegant devices sitting out of sight in factories.

Things are starting to change, however. Robots have benefited from rapid innovations in smartphones, which brought cameras, sensors and wireless communications. ____16____Robots are leaving industrial settings for everyday life and, will work in supermarkets, social care and much more.

____17____Many industries are facing a shortage of labour in such a pandemic world. Robots are now indispensable, picking items off shelves and helping people pack a rising numbers of boxes. They are even beginning to deliver goods or food right to people’s doors.____18____

And yet many people fear that robots will destroy jobs.____19____The evidence suggests robots will be disruptive but ultimately beneficial for labour markets. A Yale University study that looked at Japanese manufacturing between 1978 and 2017 found that an increase of one robot unit per 1, 000 workers boosted a company’s employment by 2.2%.

For all that, the march of the robots will bring big changes to workplaces.____20____But that need not be the disaster many fear. One example of “bad automation” is self-service checkouts in supermarkets. Checkout staff who retrain to help customers pick items may well find that dealing with people in need is more rewarding than spending all day scanning barcodes in of lasers.

The potential gains from the robot revolution are huge. In Capek’s play, the robots revolt against their human masters and cause mass unemployment and worse. The beginnings of the worlds real robots have not matched Capek’s satire (讽刺). There is no reason to think that their future needs to either.

    A. They could not be coming at a better time.

    B. The skills and firms that are rewarded will shift, too.

    C. The use of advanced technologies lead to increases in hiring.

    D. In fact, concerns about mass unemployment are overblown.

    E. Firms should recognize the value of retraining and lifelong learning.

    F. Having more robots to boost productivity would be a good thing.

    G. Recent advances in machine learning have equipped them to make wiser decisions.

    【答案】Dear Mike,

    How is everything going?

I’m glad to learn that you’re learning Chinese and have made some progress in reading and writing Chinese characters. You say you have difficulty communicating with people in Chinese. Now let me give you some advice.

First, you should be brave and confident to speak Chinese and don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Additionally, speak Chinese slowly and clearly. In this way, you can make yourself understood easily. Sometimes body language is useful.

I hope these suggestions will help you.

    Best wishes!

    Yours sincerely,

    第二节(满分25分)

    47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Christmas was fast approaching and we had ordered many gifts online. So, when die doorbell rang, I was sure some of the packages had arrived. I ran to the door and swung it open, but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful little cat sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. There was no way that she could have rung the doorbell by herself, was there? Were my new neighbors playing tricks on me?

My husband called her little angel, so we named her Angel. She had a calm aura (氛围) about her as she walked straight into our home and hearts, fitting in perfectly. It seemed as if she was always meant to be in this big house with us. She was an old soul and turned out to be the perfect companion (伙伴). Always by my side, she was more like a puppy than a kitten. Wise beyond years, she enjoyed exploring through the tunnels and mysterious rooms as much as I did, but with much less fear. Angel was brave.

So, I took a page from her book and decided to be brave, too. We had just moved into a big, old country house and there was an underground stone cellar (地下室) I had been eager to explore. The only way in was through a door partly hidden by the grass, then down a shaky ladder (梯子) to its dark floor. I guessed it was probably twelve feet deep.

I had promised my husband that I wouldn’t explore dangerous areas unless he or someone else was around. But he was away on a business trip for a week, and I didn’t want to wait until he came back. I figured that Angel would count as my companion. I was ready to explore this cellar, and so was she. I equipped myself with my cell phone, a good flashlight and warm clothes, and carefully started down the shaky ladder.

    注意:

    1. 续写词数应为150左右:

    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

    Paragraph 1:

I don’t remember what happened but I woke up on the stone cellar floor with a broken arm and pieces of the ladder lying around me.

    Paragraph 2:

Thank goodness, Angel hadn’t fallen into the cellar and she was left as my last hope.

I don’t remember what happened but I woke up on the stone cellar floor with a broken arm and pieces of the ladder lying around me. My flashlight was broken, as were my eyeglasses and my phone. I turned on the phone and it lit up! Sadly, however, no signal. If only I could get the still-functioning phone up through the door, it might connect to the Internet, so I could shout at Siri from down below for help. In the daylight, I could make out Angel was mewing at me from above.

    Paragraph 2:

Thank goodness, Angel hadn’t fallen into the cellar and she was left as my last hope. She kept her eye on me. Waving the phone, I instructed “Angel! catch it!” With a deep breath and a silent prayer, I cast the phone upward. Miraculously, Angel managed to catch it with her paws as it shot through the door and lay it right by the entrance. Once it connected to the Internet, I yelled at Siri to call emergency services. With them on the line, I screamed out my situation. When heavy footsteps came near, I knew I was saved. I no longer wonder if it was Angel who rang the doorbell that day.
