When I worked in a large city, passing by someone who was homeless wasn't an uncommon sight. The difficult situation of those I saw touched me deeply.
I felt I must do something, and, as a single mother, I decided to come up with a plan that fitted my limited budget. I began by setting aside five to ten dollars and passing them out to those I met on the street each week.
Though a dollar felt like a small amount, I realized how powerful it was. For me, I recognized that those I passed by were people just like me. Sometimes we would joke a bit and smile together. On some occasions, I was able to give more. I don't know how and if the dollars helped, but I know that the connections we made did.
One day after I had started this weekly practice, I had saved up enough to buy myself a new winter coat. With it around my shoulders, I realized that my old coat could still be put to use by someone who had little or nothing to protect them from the cold. However, at that moment, I felt inspired to pass on this opportunity for kindness. I turned to the salesman who had helped me, and asked if he would feel comfortable taking my old coat, walking to the corner, and offering it to someone in need. Slightly taken aback, he smiled. "I will as soon as I get a break," he said. "Thanks for being so considerate."
I can't help but feel that my experiences with kindness have moved me to pass it on, and in this way, I feel I've helped more than just those I pass by on the street. Kindness touches many hearts, and I am grateful for the way it has touched mine.
24. Why did the author decide to come up with a plan?
A. Because she wanted to increase her limited
B. Because she needed to set aside some bills.
C. Because she always passed by some homeless people.
D. Because she wanted to do something for the homeless people.
25. What did the author think of the dollars she gave to those people?
A. It didn't make sense.
B. It could help them a lot.
C. It might have been a small amount to them.
D. It brought a friendly connection between them.
26. What do the underlined words "taken aback" in the fourth paragraph probably mean?
A. Surprised. B. Satisfied. C. Upset. D. Frightened.
27. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Helping People Who Are Homeless.
B. My Experiences with Kindness.
C. Raising Money to Help Those in Need.
D. My Weekly Practice of Helping Others.

Baby sign language is a growing movement. Pointing to a colorful flower, Campbell lifts her baby's soft hand, and rapidly moves it from one side of his nose to the other as she sniffs (嗅)."Flower!" she says loudly. Gregory smiles and looks carefully. It could be a year before Gregory, 4 months old, can speak, but now his mother hopes to communicate with her baby through sign language.
Like others around the world, Campbell is part of a growing movement of parents teaching hearing babies simple signs to communicate before they can talk. The baby sign language has been more popular in recent years. The movie,"Meet the Fockers",where the main character teaches his young grandson to sign, makes it well developed.
Babies generally begin to talk between 12 and 15 months, but babies can use sign language to communicate before they learn how to speak.
"We know they are learning language faster than they are able to show you with their speech production because that system takes a long time to develop." says McRoberts, director of developmental research at the Haskins Laboratories.
"They are understanding words before they are able to say them. From around 16 to 18 months, they might say 50 words but understand 200.They understand short sentences well." says McRoberts.
Studies have shown deaf children learn to use sign language earlier than hearing children learn to speak meaningfully. As to whether hearing babies can communicate earlier with sign language, McRoberts says,"I think that's still unknown. It may not. I'm very interested in that very question."
28. From the first paragraph we can know ______ .
A. Campbell teaches her son to speak early
B. Gregory can use baby sign language well
C. baby sign language can help a child speak at the age of four months old
D. baby sign language is becoming more and more popular
29. The underlined word "it" (in Paragraph 2)probably refers to ______ .
A. how to teach a grandson
B. making baby sign language meaningful
C. the movement of teaching babies sign language
D. the movie, "Meet the Fockers"
30. Many parents teach their babies sign language mainly to ______ .
A. communicate with their babies
B. make their babies learn English fast
C. make their babies clever
D. make their babies interested in language
31. Which of the following does McRoberts agree with? ______
A. Babies learn to talk quickly.
B. Babies can understand more words than they can say.
C. Hearing babies can communicate earlier.
D. Deaf babies understand short sentences well.
D
Have you ever wondered how your favorite NBA team received its famous name? All NBA teams have an interesting story or a history behind their names. Some of the names reflect the city’s culture or history, others came from previous owners and many were selected through“Name the Team” contests.
For teams like Los Angeles and Utah, the names were not always a reflection of the city. Even though Los Angeles has no lakes, the Laker name has been a city treasure for almost 40 years. Before going to Los Angeles, the team originated in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1948, team officials chose the name for its direct relationship to the state’s motto, “The Land of 10,000 Lakes.” The team name went unchanged after moving to Los Angeles in 1960.
Because Utah’s team originated in New Orleans, Louisiana, it was called the Jazz. In 1974, New Orleans club officials chose the name to represent (代表) the city for its reputation as the “jazz capital of the world.” The name stayed with the team even after finding a new home in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1979.
The Chicago Bull’s original owner, Richard Klein, named the team the Bulls. He picked the name because a fighting bull is relentless, and never gives up. Klein, who founded the club in 1966, believed these qualities were necessary for a championship team and hoped his Chicago athletes would live up to the team name. It is a belief that Bulls-winner of the six NBA championships-have definitely followed.
In 1967, the Indian Pacers selected their team name in a different way from most other teams. Their decision was based on what they wanted to accomplish in the NBA. Team officials chose the Pacers name because the organization wanted to set the “pace” in professional basketball.
32. Which can be the best title for this passage?
A. History of NBA
B. Interesting Stories about NBA
C. Famous NBA Teams
D. Stories behind the names of NBA Teams
33. Los Angeles’ team is named “the Laker” because ____________.
A. the team got this name in another city, which had a lot of lakes
B. it was named after a city treasure
C. Los Angeles is a city of lakes
D. the name was selected from a “Name the Team” contest
34. “Jazz capital of the world” refers to ___________.
A. Salt Lake City B. New Orleans
C. Los Angeles D. Minneapolis
35 Richard Klein named Chicago’s team “the Bulls” mainly because _______.
A. he had expected the success of the team
B. people in Chicago used to like watching bull fighting
C. Chicago was then a city famous for fighting bulls
D. he wished the team to have the qualities of fighting bulls

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Caleb's fingers slowly moved over the piano keys (钢琴键) as he searched for the next note. He'd only been taking lessons for a few weeks, and playing the piano was harder than it looked. This one, he thought as he pressed a white key. Wrong! He tried again. Oh, this one, he thought, pressing another key. Right!
"That song is challenging," said Mrs Lee, his piano teacher, when he finished playing. "But it sounds much better than it did last week! I can tell you've been practicing really hard. I think you can take a trip to the treasure chest (百宝箱). "
The treasure chest! Caleb's eyes turned to the big golden box in the corner of the room. It was filled with candy and other fun prizes. This would be Caleb's first trip to the treasure chest.
As Mrs Lee started to teach her next student, Caleb searched through the treasure chest. Should he take the dog stickers, or the orange gum? Then he saw it—a green folder (文件夹). It was his favorite color, and he could use it to carry his drawings. He reached for it. But then he saw the fruit snacks. They were strawberry, his favorite flavor. That would be a great prize too.
Folder or fruit snacks? He could not decide which choice was better. Caleb knew his mom would be there soon to pick him up, but he still couldn't decide what to pick. The folder would be perfect for his drawings, but he could almost taste the fruit snacks.
His hand moved between the two prizes as he tried to make up his mind. Then Caleb had another thought. Maybe he could take both. Mrs Lee had so many prizes in the treasure chest that she would never notice. It wouldn't even be stealing only if he wouldn't take anything next time. That would be OK, wouldn't it?
Caleb looked at Mrs Lee. She was busy helping her student. Quietly Caleb put the fruit snacks and the folder into his bag and went out of the room.

第二节 (满分25分)
But Caleb felt he did something wrong after a while. When he left Mrs Lee's piano room, he didn't feel good. By the time he reached the front door, he felt worse. He knew he did not feel good because of the bad choice he had made. He looked at the prizes. His problem wasn't folder or fruit snacks anymore. It was choosing the right or choosing the wrong. Caleb knew what he had to do.
Then he saw a car coming to him. That must be his mom's car. He opened the front door and waved to his mom. "Just a minute!" he called. He took out the green folder from his bag and went back to Mrs Lee's piano room. Apologizing for his stealing was hard, but he felt much better. Honesty turned out to be the best prize of all. He felt happy because he finally made a good choice by being honest.
