(2021·湖北八校联考)Traveling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language. Mr. Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
●Download a Language Translation App
Mr. Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them. Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you're not familiar with, or have difficulty pronouncing.
●Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr. Thibault said, are the easiest ways to communicate with locals in the country you're in. “Gestures are all universally understood,” he said.
●Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like “hello”, “thank you” and “I'm sorry, I don't speak your language. Do you speak English?” is a must, Mr. Thibault said. Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don't know more, is a form of respect and will go a long way to be liked by locals.
●Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you're headed to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
●Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with. Whenever Mr. Thibault visits a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. “I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language,” he said.

When the Apollo astronauts (宇航员) landed on the Moon in 1969, millions of people were rather sad. The person to blame (责备) for this was an artist named Chesley Bonestell. For many years, Bonestell had been creating beautifully detailed paintings of the Moon and planets. Viewers of his artwork were unhappy because the real Moon did not look like Bonestell's pictures of it.
As a space artist, Bonestell tried to make his drawings look exciting and as true as the Moon is. He worked closely with astronomers and scientists to get the most uptodate scientific information available. But in the 1940s and 1950s, no one had ever seen another planet up close. Yet Bonestell's paintings looked so real that some people thought they were photographs.
Even though Bonestell was interested in astronomy, he did not start out as a space artist. As a young man he studied architecture — the art and science of designing and making buildings. In 1938 Bonestell became a special effects artist in Hollywood. It was here that he learned he could improve his paintings by following the methods used in the movies.
In 1944, a popular magazine published a series of Bonestell's paintings of the planet Saturn. He drew Saturn as if it were seen by someone standing on each of the planet's moons. The results were dazzling. Within a few years, Bonestell's artwork was appearing regularly in magazines and books on astronomy and space flight.
Many of Bonestell's artworks had been right all along. But the biggest surprise was the Moon.Someone asked Bonestell what he was thinking when he saw the first pictures from the Moon. “I thought how wrong I was!” he said. “My mountains were sharp (陡峭的), and they aren't on the Moon.”
But he shouldn't have felt bad. No space artist had ever before taken so many people to so many faraway worlds. In the years just before the first manned space flights, Bonestell's artworks prepared people for the amazing space adventure to come.

In my first college poetry class, we were supposed to write poems. My efforts satisfied neither me nor the professor. I recall one poem about the rushing sounds of cars in rain.
After the last term, I picked up my work at the professor's office and asked, my knees shaking, “Do I have any talent?” I'd earned a “B” — even though I did every task and missed no classes. He was a kind person. “Probably not,” he said softly, looking down. “Thank you.” I said, and walked back to my dorm. I felt like a grafted (嫁接的) apple tree: part of me disappointed; another part defiant.
The defiant part led me to another poetry class the following year. This time, students drove the discussion and we read contemporary poems. I earned an “A”. Many years later, the professor told me that every student who did the work earned an “A”. His approach was as encouraging as the first instructor's was discouraging, but from that discouragement, I learned that teachers don't hold the keys to their students' talent.
I believe that every human being is born with talent for making art: visual, literary or musical. Some lucky souls are born with many talents. But no one can predict if or when talent might develop into art that others recognize as good. Artists must have enough ego (自信) to make art and enough modesty to improve it. They must be open to change. They must be their own toughest critics (批评者), and be able to absorb the criticism.
I've been teaching creative writing for more than 30 years now. Students sometimes ask me, “Do I have talent?” I tell them my story, and I repeated Joyce Carol Oates' words, “There is only the work.” And then I say, “Of course you have talent, but you must not need praise. Make art regardless of whether anyone approves — or even notices.”

9.What does the author want to tell us in Paragraph 4?
A.Discouragement pushes artists to improve.
B.Hard work leads artists to success.
C.A good artist needs more than talent.

It took me a moment to realize what had happened. Three days had passed and Rita seemed to get weaker and weaker. The rain had stopped. However, the sky was still cloudy, and it was so dark that I couldn't see the buildings even across the road. I took a pressure reading from the weather station:947mb, which let me know exactly where I was — in the eye of the storm.
There were rains and winds still, but not oppressive (难以忍受的) anymore. There was still no power, hot water or food. Besides, I didn't sleep well for all these days, but I felt more relaxed since the weather report said Rita was leaving. What's more, I was luckier than those people who had lost their homes or even worse, lost their lives because of Rita.
As I travelled further to the west, going after the storm, the damage along the way became less severe. I arrived in Houston after a tricky journey with my fuel supplies almost all gone. However, I came across another storm chaser (追逐者) who had 45 gallons of petrol. He helped me and we shared our working experience these days. With a complete stroke of luck I found a rundown hotel that allowed me to have a room overnight before the midnight. Although there was no running water, no power and no air conditioning, I curled up into a corner and fell asleep quickly.
I woke up the next morning, and what a change! The sky was blue and cars were moving around. Sirens could be heard as convoys (护航队) of emergency managements started to head west towards where I had come from. “The storm had stopped and I could go home. I gave all my remaining supplies to other people at the hotel and headed towards the airport. Houston Airport was not damaged, so I took my flight and drank my first hot drink in four days.”
All in all, when I came back home, I was proud that I finally made it again to follow and record the storm and I really learned a lot these days. Although it's dangerous, I love my job as not many people would go into the eye of an intense storm.
