【答案】1. B 2. C 3. A

I was 11 years old when I asked my mom for piano lessons in 2010. We were in the economic crisis. She said a polite “ no ”.
That didn’t stop me. I googled the measurements for a keyboard, drew the keys on a piece of paper and stuck it on my desk. I would click notes on an online keyboard and “ play” them back on my paper one—keeping the sound they made on the computer in my head. I spent six months playing without touching a real piano. Once my mom saw that I was serious, she borrowed money and bought me 10 lessons.
I still remember the first one. I was struck by how real the sound of the piano was. I sat my grade one after eight lessons. Once I started secondary school, we couldn’t afford lessons again. I passed grade three, and then grade five, practicing only on my piece of paper.
One evening, when I was about 13, my mom said she had a surprise for me; it was an electronic keyboard, bought with more borrowed money. It was the first time I’d played for her. She was in shock.
My school didn’t offer music A-level. I found the Purcell School for young musicians. But I had to pass a difficult test. Some of the questions involved an evaluation of the composer or when some piece was written. I felt stressed. To my amazement, I was offered a place.
At Purcell, I spent two years working as hard as I could. I performed to raise money and save enough to buy my first piano. When I left Purcell, I was awarded the senior piano prize and senior academic music prize. I am now at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. I feel proud: it’s been 10 years since I drew my paper piano, and I’m at one of the world’s leading music schools.
The irony is that I continue to do a lot of my practice away from the piano---what we call mental practice. The paper piano helped arouse my curiosity about how music works, the building blocks that form the pieces.
4. Why did the author’s mom buy him 10 lessons at last?
A. She was shocked by his first performance.
B. She had no doubt about his talent for piano.
C. She realized that he meant what he said.
D. She suddenly made a fortune.
5. Which of the following can best describe the author?
A. Honest. B. Determined. C. Humorous. D. Optimistic.
6. The underlined word “irony” in the last paragraph shows that the author felt ________.
A. surprised B. proud C. satisfied D. disappointed
7. What is the best title of the text?
A. Mental Practice Matters
B. A Surprise from Mum
C. Learning An Instrument Costs Too Much
D. Stick to Your Dreams

Afternoon tea, the most typical of English customs, is, perhaps surprisingly, a relatively new tradition. The custom of drinking tea became popular in England during the 1660s thanks to King Charles II and his wife, and it was not until the mid-19th century that the concept of “afternoon tea” first appeared.
Afternoon tea was introduced by Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, in the year 1840. At that time lunch was taken early but the evening meal was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, leaving a long period of time between the two meals. The Duchess would become hungry in the afternoon, so she asked that tea and cake be brought to her room around four o’clock. This became a habit of hers and later she began inviting friends to join her.
This palace tea party was such a success that it soon spread to London and other places in UK as a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s, upper-class women would dress up for their afternoon tea, also known as “low tea” because tea was taken while sitting in low, comfortable chairs or sofas.
While Low Tea was largely a game for the upper class, “high tea” was a necessary meal for working class families. During the second half of the Victorian Period, working families would return home late tired and exhausted. As the most important meal of the day, the table would be set with meats, bread, butter, cheese and of course, a pot of good, strong tea to lift their spirits. Because it was eaten at a high, dining table, it was called “high” tea.
To experience the best of the afternoon tea tradition, treat yourself with a trip to one of London’s finest hotels. There are also a wide selection of old-fashioned tearooms offering afternoon tea experience.
We provide very British afternoon tea experience trips during your stay in London. Just tell your tour guide when you want to taste the culture and we will arrange everything for you with a very reasonable charge. It’ll be a once in a lifetime experience. Don’t miss it.
8. Why did the Duchess of Bedford need afternoon tea?
A. It’s a fashionable palace social event. B. It’s a tradition from King Charles II.
C. The evening meal was too late for her. D. She wanted to spread tea culture in UK.
9. What do we know about high tea?
A. It was a game for the upper class. B. It was started by Queen Victoria.
C. It was an occasional social activity. D. It was highly important to working class.
10. Which of the following statement is NOT true according to the text?
A. Low tea was mostly enjoyed by upper-class ladies.
B. Low tea was eaten while sitting in low chairs or sofas.
C. The tea making peopled spirits high was called high tea.
D. High tea was taken by working class at a high dinning table.
11. What’s the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain the origin of afternoon tea. B. To advertise for tea experience trips.
C. To honor the tradition of drinking tea. D. To introduce two afternoon tea types.

Scientists have long said getting a good night’s sleep is important to your health. Now, an American team of scientists reports that too much sleep might be connected with cognitive decline. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine did the sleep study. Their findings were published in the September issue of Brain.
The study examined 100 adults who had been under medical observation for cognitive ability for 3 years. The average age of the study subjects was 65. Every year, they were asked to complete several tests for signs of cognitive decline—the higher the score, the less cognitive decline. They also wore special devices to measure their brain activity during sleep.
The study found that eighty-eight of the group were identified as free of cognitive damage, eleven subjects as very little damaged, and one as a little damaged. And those whose cognitive scores declined slept less than 4.5 hours or more than 6.5 hours per night. But the scores stayed the same for those in the middle of the range. Dr. Brendan Lucey, leading author of the research, said, “Our study suggests that there is a middle range for total sleep time for best cognitive ability. Shorter and longer sleep times were connected with worse cognitive result. ”
Greg Elder, a sleep researcher at Northumbria University, expressed his ideas about the findings. He wrote in The Conversation, “This is low when we consider that older adults are advised to get between seven and eight hours of sleep every night.” He also noted that the research should have taken other information about the subjects studied, including their general health or economic conditions, into consideration.
But Dr. Lucey agreed that each person’s sleep needs are unique. Babies, young children, and teens need even more sleep for their growth and development. And people over 65 should also get more sleep per night. “It suggests that sleep quality may be key, not simply total sleep,’’ Lucey added.
12. Which side of the study does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. Its background. B. Its process. C. Its result. D. Its preparations.
13. Which is the best for total sleep time according to the study?
A. 4 hours. B. 6 hours. C. 7 hours. D. 9 hours.
14. What can be inferred from Greg Elder’s words?
A. The findings need to be perfected. B. Older adults need less sleep every night.
C. The findings agree with common beliefs. D. The more you sleep, the better your health is.
15. Which of the followings may Dr. Lucey agree with?
A. One’s sleep styles cannot be changed. B. Sleep time matters more than sleep quality.
C. The total sleep time increases with age. D. Sleep needs differ from person to person.
