I was able to buy it a little over a year ago because I had my relatives give me money for my birthday instead of clothes that wouldn’t fit. I let a salesclerk fool me into buying a discontinued model. I realized this a day later, when I saw newspaper advertisements for the set at seventy-five dollars less than I had paid. The set worked so beautiful when I first got it home that I would keep it on until stations signed off for the night. Fortunately, I didn’t get any channels showing all-night movies or I would never have gotten to bed. Then I started developing a problem with the set that involved static(静电) noise. For some reason, when certain shows switched into a commercial, a loud noise would sound for a few seconds. Gradually, this noise began to appear during a show, and to get rid of it, I had to change to another channel and then change it back. Sometimes this technique would not work, and I had to pick up the set and shake it to remove the sound. I actually began to build up my arm muscles(肌肉) shaking my set. When neither of these methods removed the static noise, I would sit helplessly and wait for the noise to go away. At last I ended up hitting the set with my first, and it stopped working altogether. My trip to the repair shop cost me $62, and the sit is working well now, but I keep expecting more trouble.4. Why did the author say he was fooled into buying the TV set?    He got an older model than he had expected.    He couldn’t return it when it was broken.    He could have bought it at a lower price.    He failed to find any movie shows on it.5.  Which of the following an best replace the phrase “signed off” in paragraph 1?    ended all their programs    provided fewer channels     changed to commercials    showed all-night movies6.  How did the author finally get this TV set working again?    By shaking and hitting it    By turning it on and off    By switching channels     By having it repaired7. How does the author sound when telling the story?    Curious    Anxious    Cautious    Humorous C    Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger , but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less usable fresh water. A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.
Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(短缺). Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.
Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too In the United States , a family of four can use 1. 5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number.
You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher (洗碗机)only when it is full Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.
8:Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?AUsing river water.BThrowing batteries away.CPaving parking lots.DThrowing rubbish into lakes.9:What can be inferred from the text?AAll water shortages are due to human behavior.BIt takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.CThere is much we can do to reduce family size.DThe average family in America makes proper use of water.10 :The last paragraph is intended to    Ashow us how to fix leaks at home Btell us how to run a dishwasher Cprove what drinking glass is best for us Dsuggest what we do to save water at home   第二节  (5小题;每小题2分,满分10)  根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。We're directly affected by our environment. When the rising temperature or the bitter cold is the first thing on your mind, it might be hard to discuss anything else. However, as a matter of fact, you needn't have worried so much about this.     11    However, there are ways to change the activity into a meaningful moment between two people.   12      Talking about shared interests is the easiest way to make a connection with someone-and more personal talkingabout the weather. When you start a conversation with someone, try searching for pieces of information that you can connect to.2. Don't ask someone what they do.When speaking with someone for the first time, work is always one of our topics. But wanting to know what someone does for a living may kill our conversations.     13  When it comes to small talk, try avoiding jobs and discovering general interests instead.3.Enjoy the silence. No one likes a long stop-but most silent moments between topics aren't as long as you think they are.     14   Sometimes stops are needed in order to continue a conversation. Remember that if you say something, the other person may need to think about it, so enjoy the silence.4. Look at your conversation as a learning experience.Different people have different thoughts, ideas and feelings. Ask someone about a topic they're familiar with that you know nothing about. Every time you meet someone new-or even speak with someone you know-it's an opportunity to learn something .     15    You can expand your knowledge of other areas, cultures and nations.A.Search for common interests.B.Keep your introduction simple.C.Small talk may not be pleasant.D. My whole life, brief as it was, had been spent in that big old house, gracefully touched with the laughter and tears of four generations. When the final day came, I ran to the small backyard and sat alone, with tears welling up from my heart. Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I looked up to see my grandfather. "It isn't easy, is it, Billy?" he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me."Grandpa," I replied through my tears," how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?"For a moment he just stared off into the apple trees." Goodbye is such a sad word," he said. "It seems too final, too cold, for friends to use. We seem to have so many ways of saying goodbye and they all have one thing in common : sadness . When you and your friends must part, I want you to reach deep within you and bring back that first hello. Come with me, my friend. "he whispered. We walked , hand in hand , to his favorite place in the front yard, where a huge red rosebush sat noticeably alone. Kneeling, he pulled me close." It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It's that special place in your heart that makes them so."His eyes met mine again. "Billy, I planted these roses a long time ago-before your mother came to the world. I put them into the soil the day my first son was born. It was my way of saying " thank you " to God . That boy's name was Billy , just like yours. I used to watch him pick roses for his mother." I saw my grandfather's tears. I had never seen him cry before.
