    Where does your food come from? How is it made? These days, many people worry about food safety. But food safety is not a new worry. In 1906, Upton Sinclair(辛克莱,美国作家) wrote the Jungle.     Teenagers need to eat nutritious (有营养的) food while they’ re still young so that they will grow up to be healthy adults. Therefore, it is necessary for school cafeterias (食堂) to provide healthy food. With this in mind, the government has introduced a new food safety regulation (规定) that will improve nutrition and health standards in schools.
    The regulation took effect on April 1. It requires those who are in charge of kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to eat with students in their cafeterias. Schools will also be required to make information regarding food sources and suppliers (供应商) public.
    The regulation also suggests that parents should eat with students at school in order to provide advice on food safety and nutrition. Schools must find out food safety problems and solve them in a timely manner.
    If a school is caught buying low-quality food or failing to report food safety incidents (事件), the people in charge of the school will be warned, fired or handed over to law enforcement (执法机关), the regulation says.
    Parents across China have become increasingly angry about food safety incidents in schools, according to The Beijing News.
    The most recent example occurred in March at the Chengdu No 7 High Development School. Parents posted videos and photos of moldy (发霉的) food that was served in the school’s cafeteria, China Daily reported. The school’s principal was eventually fired.
    In October, the head of an international school in Shanghai was fired after health and education authorities found moldy tomatoes and onions in the schools kitchen.

    If you bought some candies months ago but never ate it, how can you tell whether it's still eatable? The easiest way is to check the"expiration(截止) date (EXP)"printed on the cover. If that date has already passed, you're likely to throw the candies away. But is that really necessary?
    According to a new report from the NRDC, tons of food is wasted each year, largely because people don't fully understand what expiration dates, or" use﹣by dates", actually mean, so they think the food is not safe to eat.

    The British development group Practical Action says the best way to prepare foods for storage(储存) is at harvest(收获) time while still in the field.
    Use a sharp knife to cut the fruits and vegetables off and put them on a clean place. Do not put them on the ground. Use water to clean off dirt. Usually it is better not to pick off the leaves from fruits and vegetables before storage. Without the leaves, food can become dry.

    Food sometimes gets poisoned(有毒的) with harmful things. A person who eats such food can get an illness called food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually not serious, but some types are deadly.     Nowadays, the food that you buy comes from many different countries. Have a look in your fridge, cupboard, and fruit bowl and check the origins(来源) of the food. This journey, from “field to plate”, is called “food miles”. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer’s field to the person who buys the food.
