Nw, it seems this science fictin plt is ne baby step clser t reality. Fr the first time, researchers have had “cnversatins” invlving nvel questins and math prblems with lucid dreamers—peple wh are aware that they are dreaming.
The researchers first trained participants t recgnize when they were dreaming. As the participants fell asleep, the scientists mnitred their brain activity, eye mvement, and facial muscle cntractins. In thse tests, researchers asked the dreamers simple yes r n questins r math prblems, like eight minus six.
Asked 158 questins, the lucid dreamers respnded crrectly 18.6% f the time, the researchers reprt tday in Current Bilgy. The dreamers gave the wrng answer t nly 3.2% f the questins; 17.7% f their answers were nt clear and 60.8% f the questins gt n respnse. The researchers say these numbers shw the cmmunicatin, even if difficult, is pssible. After several questins, the dreamers were wken up and asked t describe their dreams. Sme remembered the questins as part f a dream: One dreamer reprted math prblems cming ut f a car radi. Anther was at a party when he heard the researcher interrupting his dream, like a narratr in a mvie, t ask him whether he spke Spanish.
The experiment prvides a better way t study dreams, says lead authr Karen Knkly, a cgnitive neurscientist at Nrthwestern University. “Almst everything that’s knwn abut dreams has relied n retrspective reprts given when the persn is awake and these can be distrted(曲解).” Knkly hpes this technique culd be used in the future therapeutically t influence peple’s dreams s they can better deal with trauma, anxiety, and depressin.

Changes in scial relatinships ver the apes’ lifetimes prvide clues abut bth animal and human cgnitin. Think back t years past. As a kid, yu mst likely had mre friends than yu d nw. There were prbably a lt f children n the playgrund yu cnsidered a friend, but nt all f these friendships were very deep. Grwing up, yur friendship circle mst likely grew smaller. Instead f having many skin-deep relatinships, yu nw have just a few really imprtant friendships.
This is nrmal. When we are lder, we tend t fcus n maintaining psitive, meaningful relatinships. One idea suggests that we becme mre selective abut ur friends because we becme increasingly aware f ur wn mrtality. In ther wrds, we have future-riented cgnitin. Hwever, a recent study published in Science n the wild chimpanzees living in Uganda’s Kibale Natinal Park suggests that ur friendships may nt actually be tied t thinking abut the future.
Alexandra Rsati, ne f the study’s lead investigatrs, had heard abut this lng-term field study in Uganda. In this study, a team f researchers analyzed 78,000 hurs f bservatins f 21 male chimpanzees made between 1995 and 2016 at the Kibale Natinal Park. Accrding t Rsati, a unique feature f this study is the value that exists in the lng-term cllectin f data. “We used 20 years f data fr this paper. It lets us lk at this really detailed infrmatin abut what's ging n in these chimpanzees’ scial lives,” she says. The findings surprised her.
Like humans, as these chimpanzees grew lder, they increased the number f mutual friendships and decreased the number f ne-sided friendships they maintained. In these mutual friendships, aged chimpanzees were mre likely t grm each ther, and they engaged in grming fr lnger perids f time.
The study by Rsati and her clleagues gives valuable insight int hw natural selectin shapes scial relatinship strategies as we age. What’s imprtant abut this chimpanzee study and ther studies like it is that they prvide lng-term data n knwn individuals that live a lng time. By studying ther primates that live a lng time, we can learn mre abut ur wn behavir.
    32. Accrding t the passage, what can we knw abut the study f chimpanzees ?
    A. Friendships are future-riented cgnitin.
    B. As we age, we might have fewer friends.
    C. Friendship is unchangeable.
    D. The aged chimpanzees are likely t be fed up with friendship.
    33. What des the underlined wrd “mutual ” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
    A. Interactive. B. Clse. C. Valuable. D. Persnal.
    34. What is the meaning f the study f chimpanzees’ scial lives?
    A. We can learn mre abut urselves.
    B. We can discver hw natural selectin develps.
    C. We will knw mre abut ur ancestrs.
    D. We can gain lng-term data n knwn individuals.
35.Which can be the best title fr the text?
    A. A new finding abut friendships surprises us.
    B. Friendships are valuable t the chimpanzees.
    C. What Chimpanzees can teach us abut human friendships?
    D. What d we knw abut human friendships?
