Let’s face it. No one drinks diet sodas for the taste. People drink diet sodas in the hope that it will help them lose weight or at least keep them from gaining it. Yet it seems to have exactly the opposite effect, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Texas said those who drank two or more diet sodas a day had waist size increases that were six times greater than those who didn’t drink diet sodas. What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drank, the more weight they were likely to gain, said Sharon Fowler.

The study was based on data from 474 participants in a large, ongoing research project, where the participants were followed for nearly 10 years.

While the findings are surprising, they also offer some explanations. Nutrition expert, Melanie Rogers, who works with overweight patients in New York, has found that when patients are switched from regular to diet sodas, they don’t lose weight at all. We weren’t seeing weight loss necessarily, and that was confusing to us, said Rogers.

So why would diet soda cause weight gain? No one knows for sure yet, but it could be that people think they can eat more if they drink diet sodas, and so over-compensate for the missing calories.

A related study found some sweeteners (甜味剂) raised blood sugar levels in some mice. Data from this and other potential studies suggest that the promotion of diet sodas and artificial sweeteners may be risky, said Helen P. Hazuda, professor at the University of Texas’s school of medicine. They may be free of calories, but not of consequences.

24People drink diet sodas to ____________.

Aenjoy its taste Bstay in fashion

Cachieve weight loss Dgain more energy

25The new study suggests that drinking diet sodas ____________.

Acauses people to become heavier Bhelps people to be healthier

Cmakes people much thinner Doffers people more calories

26We can learn from the passage that ____________.

Aregular sodas make people lose more weight Bdiet soda drinkers tend to eat more food

Cdiet sodas do help reduce calories Dmost blood diseases come from diet sodas

27The underlined word They in the last paragraph probably refers to ____________.

Asweeteners Bdiet sodas and artificial sweeteners

Csodas Ddiet soda drinkers and sweetener takers

    C

As part of a health initiative, Berkeley is getting ready to become the first city in the US to require large grocery stores to stop allowing the sales of junk food and candy in checkout aisles(过道). The new rule is expected to go into effect in March 2021.

The “Healthy Checkout Ordinance(法规)” was approved by Berkeley’s City Council. It requires stores over 2,500 square-feet in size to sell at least 25 square-feet of healthy items within a three-foot radius(半径) of checkout registers. So now instead of candy and soda and other high calorie items, shoppers can expect to see fresh fruit and whole grain alternatives at checkout counters.

“Placement of unhealthy snacks near a register increases the likelihood that customers will purchase these foods and drinks when willpower is weak at the end of a long shopping trip,” City Council member Kate Harrison said. The new rule will affect at least 25 retailers(零售商)in Berkeley. These include Whole Foods, CVS, Walgreens and Safeway.

“It's not a ban: it's a nudge(推动),” Harrison said. “Stores can still sell candy and soda, just not at your child's eye level in the checkout.” The council said the shift to selling more healthy products at checkouts will still be profitable for stores because data shows customers are looking for more low sugar and low sodium products anyway. They also said retailers in test cases around the country and in California have seen dramatic increases in sales of healthy foods since they changed their checkouts to include more fresh options in displays.

The ordinance will make grocery stores a “more neutral and health-friendly space for consumers,” said Ashley Hickson, senior policy associate at the Center for Science in the Public Interest(CSPI). Junk food makers spend a lot to make sure their products are front and center in stores, Hickson said, but some consumers don't like the practice. In a CSPI survey, 76% of shoppers who bought unhealthy food or drink at checkout regretted the purchase, she added.

28What can we infer from Harrison's words in Paragraph 3?

ACustomers tend to ignore the price when tired.

BItems placed near checkouts are most profitable.

CCustomers will easily spend a fortune when tired.

DItems placed near checkouts are inviting to customers.

29Why will the rule bring stores no loss in profit according to the council?

AAlternatives will make up for sales.

    BRetailers will get financial support.

CHealthy food will attract more customers.

DRetail prices of other goods will be raised.

30What do the underlined words “practice” in the last paragraph refer to?

ASpending a lot to promote sales. BAdvertising some unhealthy drinks.

CPlacing junk food at checkout aisles. DReplacing junk food with healthy ones.

31What's the best title of the text?

AThe Negative Influences of Junk Food

BHow to Maximize the Profits of Stores

CBerkeley Will Ban Most Junk Food at Checkouts

DBerkeley Pays More Attention to People's Health

    D

Despite earning more than $ 100,000 in household income, many people feel that they are living month to month and that a loss of employment or sudden medical emergency could easily move them from the upper middle class to low income earners. This feeling of being on the “edge” of poverty, despite these levels of income, seems a bit ridiculous but it really comes down to easy credit, misunderstanding of their incomes and peer group pressures.

Even in today’s tough economy, for those with six-figure incomes credit is easy to come by. Credit companies may have cut back offerings to those in lower income brackets due to the recent credit reforms, but there seems to be little or no effect on high income earners. Their being able to get credit without difficulty gives them a false sense of security that makes them spend way more than their incomes can afford. That’s why they accumulate credit card debt faster than average.

Many higher income earners feel like they are making lots of money now, and believe that they will continue to make big money. This may reduce their feeling that they need to watch their money carefully now. Hand in hand with that, many of them probably believe that they are making more money than they really are — or said another way, the money they make will go farther than it really does.

Meanwhile, many young professionals who are earning good incomes don't come from particularly privileged backgrounds, and their reference point may be that they are making twice (or more) than their parents were — so they spend like that as well. They don’t take account of the effect of inflation, which means that the cost of living is much higher than that in their parents’ generation. Further, the more you earn, the more you pay in tax. Rather than focusing on after-tax incomes, many high income earners only look at the top line figures. A $ 100,000 income before tax is only about $ 70,000 after tax.

32Who is the text centered on?

AThe upper middle class. BThe lower income group.

CPeople living in poverty. DPeople getting into debt.

33What causes some people to spend beyond their income according to the text?

ALack of real budget. BEasy availability of credit.

CThe good economic climate. DTheir privileged backgrounds.

34What does the author intend to remind young professionals about in the end?

AThey should focus on their top line figures.

BThey need to look ahead rather than look back.

CThey actually don't earn as much as they think.

DThey should form good personal financial habits.

35Which of the following might be discussed in the next paragraph?

AEffects of peer group pressures. BWays to keep financial stability.

CHarm of poor money management. DTips on reducing the risk of poverty.
