Early Tuesday morning,Melissa Breyer set out to do her usual volunteer work- collecting the bodies of migratory birds which had died colliding(碰撞)with skyscrapers in downtown Manhattan.

That morning was much worse than usual. In just over an hour,Breyer picked 236 tiny, lifeless bodies off the sidewalks around the Empire State Building. “When you have 236 dead window-struck migratory birds from one morning, it’s hard to get them all in one photo," she wrote on Twitter, with a picture showing dozens of birds in all shades of yellow, brown and grey. “Lights can be tuned off; windows can be treated. Please do something,” she pleaded.

In New York City, between 90,000 and 230,000 birds are killed each year when they collide with building glass. Fatal collisions rise twice a year during migration seasons, when birds migrate through big cities on their way to and from their winter habitats in Central and South America.“Birds are driven off course by light pollution.Theyre often attracted to bright city lights,”said Sirena Lao, a researcher at the San Francisco Bird Observatory.“So birds will veer(转向) off course and fly towards these cities, which leads them to even more

    dangers.

As a result, wildlife advocates have long advocated for dimming(使变弱)unnecessary lights during migratory seasons -a call that has been renewed recently by bird groups in New York. Wild Bird Fund, a bird care center based in New York, received more than 70 injured birds on Tuesday, including the ones collected by Breyer.“There is an easy measure that could be used today to reduce the bird deaths happening across our city: Turn off all unnecessary lighting, from 11 pm to 6 am,”the group tweeted.

The Empire State Building responded to Breyer’s tweets, thanking her for bringing the issue to the facility’s attention.“We are actively encouraging our office workers to turn off their lights at night and lower their blinds(百叶窗)wherever possible”the company wrote

    28. What's the main purpose of Melissa's Twitter message?

    A. To appeal for action. B. To educate about birds

    C. To complain about work D. To entertain the public

    29. What is largely to blame for the dead birds Mehssa collected?

    A. Air pollution. B.Illegal hunting C.Building glass. D. Light pollution.

30.How did the Empire State Building react to Breyer's tweeting?

    A. They were puzzled by it. B. They took it very seriously

C They thought it ridiculous D. They were much annoyed by it.

    31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

    C. Why do glass buildings keep killing so many birds

    D. Volunteer finds migratory birds at the Empire State Building

Doctors have transplanted the heart from a genetically modified pig into the chest of a man from Maryland in an effort to save his life. The first-of-its-kind surgery is being hailed(欢呼) as a major step forward in the decades-long effort to successfully transplant animal organs into humans

Although it's been tried before -one of the earliest subjects. known as Baby Fae survived 21 days with the heart of a baboon(狒狒)in 1984,according to Times-the practice has fallen into disuse because the animal organs are usually quickly rejected by their human host.

But doctors say this new transplant is a breakthrough because the donor pig had undergone gene-editing to remove a specific type of sugar from its cells that's thought to be responsible for previous organ rejections in patients

The man,57-year-old David Bennett from Maryland, has terminal(晚期的)heart disease.but several medical centers had determined that he was unsuitable for a human transplant, the statement said. “It was either die or do this transplant I want to live. I know it is a shot in the dark but it's my last choice,"Bennett said the day before his surgery.“I look forward to getting out of bed after I recover“

“This was a breakthrough surgery and it brings us one step closer to solving the organ shortage crisis,”Dr.Bartley Griffith, director of the Cardiac Transplant Program at UMMc and the surgeon who performed the transplant. said in the statement. “There are simply not enough donor human hearts available to meet the long list of potential recipients."

According to the United Network for Organ Sharing which oversees a network for organ transplants in the United States, there were more than 3,800 heart transplants in the country last year -a record number.More than 100,000 people in the US are currently waiting for an

organ transplant, and over 6,000 people die each year before getting one.If the method of genetically modifying donor animals so that their organs are less likely to be rejected by human hosts proves successful in the long term, such procedures might be an option for many other patients awaiting transplants.

    32. What's the significance of the surgery mentioned?

    A. It is the first ever animal-to-human organ transplant B. It is a successful animal-to-human organ transplant C. It involves gene-editing technology for the first time D. It's intended to test a theory about organ transplantation

    33. What caused the failure of Baby Fae's surgery?

    A. A strange virus. B.A misused medicine

    C. The surgeon's inexperience D. The organ rejection

34.How does Dr. Bartley Griffith sound talking about the surgery?

    A. Nervous B.Hopeless C.Confident. D. Worried.

    35. What can we conclude from the last but one paragraph?

    A. Organ transplants are badly needed in the US.

B.Few people in the US suffer from heart diseases.

    C. Heart transplants have been very successful in America

    D. The number of heart patients has been on the decline in America

How to Remember Dates for a Test-Memorization

When trying to memorize a date, students can really benefit from a memory technique based on patterns of letters, ideas, or associations -to help them recall the right numbers in the right order. There are many ways to do this.36

Use sounds and rhymes. A little trick can be sound. You can sing to yourself starting with a low sound, followed by two high sounds, and end with a tone just slightly lower than the last two.  37    Of course, you can also use a song you already know and just replace some or all of the words by what you are trying to learn.

Break numbers down.Sometimes, memorizing dates can be as simple as leaving off the first two digits.38      , you already know which century the events took place in. Even though it might not seem like it,breaking it down to just two numbers can make memorization much easier.

39         You can also associate the dates with something that you know really well. Maybe 17 and 76, or only 76 are a part of your or someone elses birthday or some other significant dates to you.Or maybe the date you are working with includes another well-known date such as Christmas day.

Write and draw. 40     drawing connections and even literally drawing can help you

memorize dates faster. This is another opportunity to let your creativity shine and put the images and stories your mind creates on paper. You can simply write down the date many times; you can make it look really fancy as you decorate it in your own style

    1. Just like with vocabulary learning
    2. B.Connect to something that you know C.Find as many associations as possible

    D. You can use any tool to help you remember E. If you are studying a particular time period

    F. You just need to find those that work best for you

    G. You can make your own song using the date and its context
