A
During the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), King Zhao of the State of Yan (燕昭王) wanted to gather talented people to make the state strong. He asked the scholar (有学问的人) Guo Wei for advice. Guo told the king a story.
In ancient times, there was a king who wanted a special kind of horse. This horse could run 1,000 li a day. It was called qianlima. He sent many people to find these horses and buy them for him. After three years, nobody found him such a horse.
One day, someone new volunteered to help. Within three months, he heard about a qianlima. He rushed to find it, but the horse was already dead. Still, he bought the bones of the horse with 500 pieces of gold. The king was very angry. “What I want is a live horse, not the bones of a dead horse!”
The man answered calmly (冷静地), “Imagine this. You’re willing to pay a high price for a dead horse, let alone a live one. This shows people you truly wish to buy the horses. Just wait and the horses you want will come very soon.” Indeed (的确), within a year, many qianlima owners brought their horses to the king. Guo told the king that he could see himself as the bones of the horse. “If I am valued (重视), more talent will be willing to serve the state,” he said. The king built houses for Guo and treated him as a teacher. Soon, talented people across the state came to help the king. His state finally beat the State of Qi.
We can better understand the story by reading the essay (文章) On Horses (《马说》) by Han Yu, a writer in the Tang Dynasty. In the essay, Han wrote that qianlima are common, but a person who can find them is rare. It tells us that talented people are common. Finding them is difficult.
The story helps us understand that talented people are important to society. They deserve(应得) respect. President Xi Jinping once told this story to officials, asking them to respect talented people. More importantly, the story pushes us to think about our own talents. It means to develop your all-around(全面的) abilities and create opportunities for yourself. Instead of waiting for someone to find you, you can actively sell yourself.
36. What did King Zhao of the State Yan actually want to have?
A. Qianlima. B. Wealth.
C. Talented people. D. The bones of a qianlima.
37. In Guo’s story, the king got angry with the man because he thought _____.

C. there wasn’t a qianlima in the world
D. qianlima weren’t the best horses in the world
38. What was the man’s reason for buying the bones of a dead horse?
A. It could help the king gather talented people.
B. Horse owners would see the king’s need for qianlima.
C. More people would kill their horses to sell horse bones.
D. The king could tell qianlima from common horses this way.
39. Guo compared himself to _____ in the story he told.
A. the volunteer B. the king
C. the qianlima owner D. the bones of a dead qianlima

Many students are taking part in after-school tutoring(辅导). I’m afraid I can’t keep up with my studies if I don’t do the same. Should I try this myself?
Abai
It’s good that you want to improve your schoolwork. Every student should have this goal. You should do everything you can to raise your grades.
However, not every student studies the same way. Some people do prefer to have a one-on-one tutor. Others prefer to learn in groups. Some simply like to study on their own. The key is to find the way that works best for you.
I used to be pretty bad at math. I envied my classmates who went to tutoring and could easily solve problems. I joined them and had tutoring three times a week. My tutor gave me homework, just like our teachers in school. It made me feel really tired.
So after about two months, I decided to give up. I listened more carefully in class and started to work out problems on my own. By doing this many times, I learned that many problems had the same rules behind them. And now, personally, I’d rather just study on my own.
You should find the way that works best for you. Don’t just do what others do. Find your weakness and try to deal with it, whether you are tutored or self-taught.
Mike

A. He has no tutors. B. He is afraid of tutoring.

42. What suggestion does Mike make?
A. Have a good tutor. B. Learn with others.
C. Study on his own. D. Find the best way.

After about five years of hard work, the National Alpine Skiing Center(国家高山滑雪中心) in the Yanqing competition zone is ready for skiers to compete. Its blueprint(蓝图) came from Liang Xu and other architects(建筑师) from the China Architecture Design and Research Group.
On the southern slopes(坡) of Xiaohaituo Mountain, the center has seven main ski runs that total about 9.4 kilometers. All of the ski trails(雪道) total 21 km, with the largest vertical(垂直的) drop at about 900 meters.
The highlight of the center is that its trails match the surroundings and the local environment. “We aim to impact(影响) the environment-mountains and plants---as little as possible,” said Liang. “It is consistent(一致的) with a traditional Chinese idea-harmony between man and nature(天人合一).”
The alpine skiing trails are dangerous. Their average slope is about 17 degrees, with some even over 34 degrees. When picking proper slopes to build trails, architects prefer those that don’t need too much construction (建设) work. “We aim for a balance between the soil (土壤) we remove and the soil we fill in,” Liang said. “In other words, you dig up some soil here, but you can use it to fill other places. We try to reduce the amount of soil that needs to be removed.”
Architects also borrowed some ideas from traditional Chinese architecture. In the southern part of China, stilted buildings(吊脚楼) are common in mountain areas. “It’s a very smart way. The houses are built above poles (柱子) so that they don’t destroy the mountain bodies,” Liang said. Inspired by this, they built some stilted platforms(平台) and houses for media workers and volunteers. All of them were constructed with removable steel components(可拆卸的钢结构组件). “After the events, they can be easily removed. The mountains can stay as they were before,” said Liang.
In general, the trails look like the wings of a flying swallow(燕子), known as “xuefeiyan”. “It matches the alpine skiing events. We are looking forward to skiers ‘flying’ through the mountains as swiftly(敏捷地) as swallows,” said Liang.
43. What do we learn about the ski center from the text?
A. It has seven 900-meter-long tracks.
B. It was ready for winter sports 5 years ago.
C. It’s on the northern slopes of Xiaohaituo Mountain.
D. It was designed by Liang Xu and other architects.
44. What kind of slopes do architects prefer to use to build tracks?
A. Slopes surrounded by mountains. B. Slopes with smaller angles.
C. Slopes that don’t need much construction. D. Slopes whose soil is easily dug up.
45.Which of the following statements is wrong?
A.The trails look like the wings of a flying swallow.
B. The center has seven main ski runs, all of the ski trails total 9.4 km.
C. Architects use traditional Chinese technology and idea to build ski trails.
D. The main feature of the skis trail is to achieve harmony between man and nature.
46. What feature of stilted buildings was borrowed to design ski center structures?
A. They show traditional Chinese culture.
B. They are built on metal support poles.
C. They do little damage to the environment.
D. They stand still even in mountainous areas.
D
People expect living, breathing fish when they visit an aquarium(海洋馆). So visitors to a Shanghai aquarium were surprised to see a robot shark instead.
CGTN reported the electric-powered “whale shark” showed up in Shanghai in January. Developed by Chinese researchers, the 4.7-meter-long “shark” has mechanical(机械的) fins. It can swim, turn and dive(潜水) like a real shark. It swims as fast as 0.7 meters per second and can go as deep as 10 meters underwater.
Bionic(仿生的) fish like this are not just for pleasing aquarium visitors. They can be used in a wide range of fields. The bionic whale shark, for example, will be equipped with different sensors(传感器) to check water quality(质量) and take photos of underwater animals and plants, CGTN reported.
According to iMedia News, military(军事的) uses are also likely. Bionic fish produce almost no noise. They will not be found by sonar, meaning they can swim around submarines(潜水艇) unnoticed compared to anti-submarine aircraft(反潛艇飞机), anti-submarine “fish” are cheaper and can work better.
Along with military and research uses , underwater rescue(救援) and archaeology(考古) can also benefit from bionic fish. Smaller robots can swim in and around sunken ships, sending all kinds of data back to people. With a 3D scanner(扫描仪), people may even make models of sunken ships.
Maybe most exciting, these fish can swim among real fish . With sensors and cameras, we can learn more about fish behavior, such as schooling-how small fish swim together to avoid predators-and breeding(繁衍). If robotic fish are good at mixing in, we may also learn what its like to get eaten by sharks!
47. What do we know about the robot shark?
A. It moves just like a real shark. B. It is larger than a real shark.
C. It was made to surprise visitors. D. It swims faster than a real shark.
48. Bionic fish can be used in military areas because
a. they are cheap and efficient anti-submarine tools
b. they make big noises that scare submarines
c. submarines can’t easily detect them
d. they can avoid submarine attacks
A. ab B. ac C. bd D. cd
49. How can bionic fish help with rescues?
A. They can bring things back from sunken ships.
B. They can collect data of sunken ships for people.
C. They can make models of a 3D scanner.
D. They can locate where the sunken ships are.
50. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The influence of bionic fish on humans. B. Sending bionic fish to school.
C. The aim of creating bionic fish. D. Using bionic fish to study fish.
