One weekend I went to Buffalo to talk at a writers' conference organized by a group of women writers. The women were serious about their writing skills, and the articles they had written were solid and useful. They asked me to take part in a radio talk show earlier in the week to publicize the conference-they would be with the host in the studio and I would be on a telephone linking from my apartment in New York.
The appointed evening arrived, and my phone rang, and the host came on and greeted me. He said he had three lovely ladies in the studio with him and he was eager to find out what we all thought of the present state of literature and what advice we had for all his listeners who were members o£ the literati (文人)and had literary ambitions themselves. This hearty introduction dropped like a stone among us, and none of the three lovely ladies said anything, which I thought was the proper response.
The silence lengthened, and finally I said, "I think we should stop mentioning the words literature and literary and literati. We're here to talk about the skills of writing.” I knew that the host had been given information about what kind of writers we were and what we wanted to discuss. But he had no other preparation. "Tell me what insights do you have about the literary experience in America today?” Silence also greeted this question.
He didn’t know what to do with that, and he began to mention the names of authors like Ernest Hemingway and Saul Bellow and William Styron, whom we surely regarded as literary giants. We said those writers didn't happen to be our models, and we mentioned people like Lewis Thomas and Joan Didion and Gary Wills, whom he hadn't heard of. We explained that these were writers we admired. "But don't you want to write anything literary?" our host said We were speechless.
It was one of the all-time upset radio talk shows.
24. What do we know about the talk show?
A. It was organized by women writers.
B. It was publicized at the conference.
C. The author went to Buffalo to take part in it.
D. The author participated in it in New York.

B. The introduction received embarrassing response.
C. The introduction increased the listeners' interest.
D. The introduction carried the host's praise for us.
26. What was the author's reaction when the host mentioned the three great literary- giants?
A. Excited. B. Inspired. C. Uninterested. D. Satisfied.
27. Who may be the author's model?
A. Joan Didion. B. Ernest Hemingway.
C. Saul Bellow. D. William Styron.

The market for tourism in remote areas is booming as never before. Countries all across the world are actively promoting their wilderness regions-such as mountains, Arctic lands, deserts, small islands and wetlands — to high-spending tourists. The attraction of these areas is obvious: by definition, wilderness tourism requires little or no initial investment. But that does not mean that there is no cost.
Once a location is established as a main tourist destination, the effects on the local community are profound. Hill-farmers can make more money from foreign travellers than working in their fields. It is not surprising that many o£ them give up their farm-work. In some hill-regions, this has led to a serious decline in farm output and a change in the local diet, because there is lacking labour to maintain terraces and irrigation systems. The result has been that many people in these regions have turned to outside supplies of rice and other foods.
In Arctic and desert societies, year-round survival has traditionally depended on hunting animals and fish and collecting fruit over a relatively short season. However, as some inhabitants become involved in tourism, they no longer have time to collect wild food; this has led to increasing dependence on bought food and stores. What should they do if these new sources of income dry up?
The physical impact of visitors is another serious problem associated with the growth in adventure tourism. Much attention has focused on erosion (侵蚀)along major roads, but perhaps more important are the forest destruction and impacts on water supplies arising from the need to provide tourists with cooked food and hot showers. In both mountains and deserts, slow-growing trees are often the main sources of fuel and water supplies may be limited through heavy use.
28. Why are some countries promoting the wilderness regions to tourists?
A. The wildness regions are accessible to tourists.
B. The landscapes there are beautiful and unique.
C. Developing tourism there doesn't need much investment.
D. Lots of high-spending tourists prefer such remote regions.
29. What is the effect of tourism on the local community?
A Many hill farmers have turned to outside supplies of foods.
B. There is enough labour to maintain terraces and irrigation systems.
C. Farm output there has increased and local diet has changed.
D. The local people's new sources of income will dry up soon.
30. Which might be the best title of the passage?
A. The future of wilderness tourism.
B. The impacts of wilderness tourism.
C. The destruction of wilderness tourism.
D. The disadvantages of wilderness tourism.
31. If there is one more paragraph following the last paragraph, what will it talk about? A. The effects on local people.
B. The solutions to these problems.
C. The choices of adventure tourists.
D. The reasons for visiting remote areas.
D
Why do you check social media? Is it to keep up with everything that your friends and family are doing? Is it to find new trendy spots to eat? Regardless of the reason, you may find yourself with different degrees of envy or discomfort after a quick look at your phone. Then you might be suffering from a phenomenon known as “Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). ”
While the phenomenon of FOMO can be traced back for centuries, it had never been the issue as it is today, causing widespread discussion and research. This rise in checking social media is naturally connected to the increasing leading position that social media holds over our lives. Every time someone opens their WeChat Moments, Facebook, Twitter... etc. , they are bombarded (轰炸)with the highlight reels of other peoples' lives. A sunny beach, delicious-looking food, a super cute kitten-they are all uplifting photos, yet they're very likely to bring about more unhappiness than joy. You see, the first thought to come out of your mind may be “Wow, that's so cool/delicious/cute", but then it takes a hard U-turn. You're thinking: "I wish I were there" or "my life is so boring compared to his/hers. " The more you see, the more likely you are to have these negative feelings.
What's worse is the habit many people have of turning to social media in search of happiness when they are feeling down, not realizing that they are just going to end up in a negative cycle of endless disappointment. Montesquieu once said: "If one only wished to be happy, this could be easily accomplished; but we wish to be happier than other people, and this is always difficult, for we believe others to be happier than they are.”
FOMO will go hand in hand with dissatisfaction and envy. Appreciate what you already have, because someone else out there in the world would gladly give everything to be you.
32. What is the purpose of the questions in paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the topic of the passage.
B. To explain the function of FOMO.
C. To describe the features of FOMO.
D. To give the reasons for checking social media.
33. How might people feel seeing other's perfect life through social media?
A. Joyful. B. Admiring. C. Comfortable. D. Envious.
34. What can we conclude from Montesquieu's words in. paragraph 3?
A We could turn to social media for happiness.
B. We couldn't realise our dream without hard work.
C. We couldn't harvest happiness through comparison.
D. We could live better than others by showing ourselves online.
35. What is the author's attitude towards FOMO?
A. Indifferent. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Hopeful.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5分,满分12. 5分)

余选项。
Thinking is great. But action makes things happen. One of the biggest differences with people that successfully grow, expand themselves, and reach their goals, is that they consistently take action. Action takes energy though, so where does that energy come from? It comes from inside. 36
Here are several ways to light the fire and inspire yourself to take action.
Act like you mean it. Maybe you want to get in great shape, but are you acting like you mean it? How many hours are you putting in each week? What routines are you trying? 37 Who are your instructors and models? What bold actions are you taking? If you act like you mean it, you'll make better choices, show more confidence, and build energy that helps you spring up.
38 Find some role models and heroes to use to lift your spirits. Just having some examples under your belt can inspire you to new levels. For example, for me, I always look to the amazing physical and philosophical achievements of Bruce Lee. Chances are, no matter what problem or challenge you're up against, somebody's been there and done that.
Shift to the future. Always thinking of the past is a quick way to bring yourself down. To lift yourself up, switch to the future and imagine the possibilities. See what's possible. This is where hope springs from. A few simple ways to shift to the future are... “How can I solve this?”…or "What would good look like?”…or "What's the end in mind?" 39
Connect to your values. You can connect everything you do to your values. This is a powerful way to inspire yourself with skill. 40 Whenever you take on a task, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?" or "How can I improve this?” Simply by connecting to your values, you make use of your inner source of power. Your values fuel you and get you excited.
A. Stand out from the others.
B. Inspiration is a powerful force. ,
C. Stand on the "shoulders of giants”.
D. Or you want to be a leading figure.
E. It's a valuable tool for us to use in analyzing possibilities.
F. Questions are a powerful way to switch to the future in effective way.
G. For example, let's say you value "continuous learning" or "growth”.

Wind whistled round the comer of the house, thunder rolled and rain beat against the windows — not a night to be outside but rather to sit by the fire. Thanks to the solid walls and roof overhead, I could imagine Dr. Frankenstein's frightening creation wandering on such a night. I was alone, my husband away and the nearest neighbor a quarter miles down the road. Alone, that is, except for Lassie, a hairy, black and white dog, who sat with her head on my lap, her intelligent, brown eyes gazing up at me as if to say, don't worry, we'll be all right.
Through the years she was with us, she proved time and time again to be a superb judge of character. We never knew if it was a result of her sense of smell or sound-but, whatever it was, she definitely possessed a talent we humans lacked. On first meeting she would either wag the tip of her tail a couple of times to indicate that the visitor was acceptable, or slightly curl her top lip, exposing her sharp teeth which told you to be alert. Always accurate, her gift was never more obvious than on this night.
The doorbell rang. I decided not to answer it. It rang again, much longer this time. Whoever was there was not going away. Still I hesitated. On the fourth ring, with Lassie by my side, I finally answered the door. My heart beat fast and my mouth went dry, for there, stood the monster himself. A twisted body under a heavy overcoat, one shoulder bumped higher than the other and his head leaned slightly forward and to one side.
“May I use your phone?” The voice came from somewhere back in his throat and, although the request was polite, his tone was rude.
Reaching in his pocket and producing a piece of paper, he handed it to me. I refused to take it. Believing he might try and force his way in, I looked at Lassie to see if she was ready to defend the home.
Surprisingly, she sat by my side, the tip of her tail wagging.

M: Mostly China, sometimes Japan and South Korea.
(Text 7)
M: Look at the clouds in the sky! It is going to rain.
W: Oh, the weather changes so fast. It was sunny a moment ago.
M; Right. How can we get to the cinema from here?
W: We can walk about five blocks east.
M: Oh, that's a little far. Is there any bus we can take?
W; Yes, we can take the No. 6 bus at the next block. But sometimes you have to wait for a long time before the bus comes.
M: That's not good. What should we do?
W; Look! Here comes a taxi.
M: OK. Let me give the driver a gesture.
(Text 8)
M: Hi, Kate! Why are you dancing? I thought we had to study for our math test!
W: Oh, hi, Bill! I was just exercising. It's my favorite way to get relaxed. I thought you would arrive later. Let me turn the music off.
M: OK. When it comes to exercise, I prefer playing soccer.
W: Sports like jogging and playing ball are good ways, but I like to dance better. Do you sometimes do it?
M: Yes, but I am not a good dancer. Oh, my team won the final last week.
W: Cool! I know you go to the gym to practise every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. M: You're right. It's hard work, but it is worth doing.
W: I see. If it weren't for the math test tomorrow, we could hang out right now.
M: Right. No more fun and games. Let me get my notebook.
(Text 9)
M: Our school has added several new courses to our grade this term. I have more homework to do now. I can't go to bed until 10: 30 every night!
W: That's only half an hour later than me. What's your favorite course, Danny?
M: I like science most.
W: That's a surprise. I thought you would like PE. You used to tell me you wanted to be a basketball player.
M: Actually it used to be my dream; after all, I was deeply influenced by my cousin. He teaches basketball very well, you know. But now I want to learn science. I'd like to make some robots.
W: Your father must be happy, as he's always wanted you to be a scientist. M: You're right. By the way, which subject did you choose? Art or history?
W: Being an artist has been my dream and I hope I can hold my own art exhibition in the future.
M: I wish you success. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to borrow some books for my lab report.
W; OK. I myself need to practice volleyball with Holly.
(Text 10)
I never thought I'd be the type to go on a cookery course! My mum and my sister used to tease me, because though I love eating I couldn't make anything myself. Then one day my cousin wanted to have cooking classes. She didn't want to do them on her own, though. And I agreed to go along. We found a college which ran cookery classes. You could do one-week, two-week or four-week courses. We thought a week should be enough to get us started, so we enrolled for that during the summer holiday.
When we got there on the first morning, loads of people had already arrived. I knew it was a popular course, with lots of teenagers like me there. What I hadn't expected was that there’d be so many teachers-you got plenty of help and I certainly needed it!
We learned how to bake a cake in the first class. And all through the course there were short talks on different ingredients. You know, like herbs and spices from different parts of the world. I think all of us were especially fascinated by one on sugar. It was given by someone who'd spent years studying it. I wouldn't mind doing something like that myself one day.
