A company called Compass Pools has some good news for height and swimming enthusiasts. Recently, the company announced their novel design—a first of its kind 360degree pool which is set to be placed on a skyscraper in London. The Infinity London will be the first and only building in the world to include this cutting-edge pool design. The pool will be laid on top of a 55story skyscraper and will allow people to float over 200 meters above the London skyline with unobstructed(没有障碍的) views of the city.
The entrance to the pool is hidden. People began to raise questions about how anyone would get inside the pool. Compass Pools explains:“Swimmers will access the pool through a rotating spiral(螺旋形的) staircase based on the door of a submarine, rising from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out.”
But that is not the only unique technology of the pool. The designers found a way to make sure the wind doesn’t blow the water down to the streets. They included a built-in anemometer(风力计) to monitor the wind speed. It is linked to a computer-controlled building management system which will also take care of the temperature of the water.
Alex Kemsley promises that this unique pool will surpass everyone’s expectations. “It’s quite a strange feeling to swim in the SkyPool at The Shard and have helicopters flying past at your level but this pool takes it a step further,” he says. “Putting your goggles(游泳镜) on and with a 360degree view of London from 220m up, it really will be something else—but it’s definitely not one for the acrophobic(恐高的)!”
While the exact date of the construction is not clear yet, if things go well, it may begin in 2022. The location has yet to be confirmed too.

2. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. How to get a view of London.
B. How to monitor the wind speed.
C. How to get into or out of the pool.
D. How to keep the water in the pool.
3. Who might not be suitable to swim in the SkyPool?
A. People who enjoy flying.
B. People who lose weight.
C. People who fear heights.
D. People who have poor sight.
4. What can we know about the SkyPool at The Shard?
A. It is not certain when people can swim in it.

根据第一段中“The pool will be laid on top of a 55story skyscraper and will allow people to float over 200 meters above the London skyline with unobstructed(没有障碍的) views of the city.”(泳池将建在一座55层的摩天大楼上,人们可以漂浮在200多米高的空中,将伦敦的全景尽收眼底。)
根据第二段中“The entrance to the pool is hidden.”(游泳池的入口隐藏着。以及后文的解释“Swimmers will access the pool through a rotating spiral(螺旋形的) staircase based on the door of a submarine, rising from the pool floor when someone wants to get in or out.”(游泳者将通过一个旋转的螺旋楼梯进入游泳池,这个楼梯是以潜艇的门为基础的,当有人想进出时,它会从池底升起。)可知,第二段介绍了游泳池的入口,解释了怎样进出游泳池的问题,划线词句“But that is not the only unique technology of the pool.”(但that并不是泳池唯一的独特技术。)
根据倒数第二段中“Putting your goggles(游泳镜) on and with a 360degree view of London from 220m up, it really will be something else—but it's definitely not one for the acrophobic(恐高的)!”(戴上护目镜,从220米以上360度俯瞰伦敦,真的会是另一番景象——但绝对不是恐高症患者喜欢的地方!)
根据最后一段中“While the exact date of the construction is not clear yet, if things go well, it may begin in 2022.”(虽然建造的确切日期还不清楚,但如果一切顺利,可能会在2022年开始。) 故选A项。

Growing up in a city has a lifelong negative impact on a person’s ability to navigate, according to a vast global survey.
In a new study, scientists led by Antonine Coutrot at Nantes University in France and Hugo Spiers at University College London describe how they used a dataset(数据集)gathered from 4 millions players of a computer game called “Sea Hero Quest”, which tests way-finding skills by asking players to memorise a map showing the location of checkpoints and then measuring how well players can steer a boat to find them.
Dr. Spiers found that the strongest indicator of a high score was a player’s age——older people performed relatively poorly. But the benefit of rural living was strong enough to offset(抵消)some of that, Data from American players showed that a 70-year-old who grew up in the countryside had the navigational abilities of an average 60-year-old across the dataset.
“The gap between the navigation skills of rural and city people was largest in America, and the researchers think they know why. They found that countries dominated by simple layouts of grid-based(网格式的)cities dragged down navigation skills more than growing up in a city based around more complicated networks of streets, such as Prague.
Dr. Spiers says that the brain’s navigational abilities probably weaken in the city environment because they are not being used as much. Although cities may appear more complicated, they also feature more clues to help residents find their way, such as numbered streets. As many city-dwellers on a visit to the countryside can prove, one field tends to look much the same as another, so there are fewer external(外部的)landmarks to help guide the way.
While people who live in cities should not be alarmed, the study does raise some interesting ideas for urban planners: keep their city designs not so simple perhaps. And for everyone else, it might be an idea to turn off Google Maps.
5. Why did the researchers use the dataset from a computer game?
A. To study the players’ memory.
B. To measure how well people control boats.
C. To improve the players' skill to find way out.
D. To see what influences people's way-finding skills.
6. What does the underlined word "that" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Strong indicator. B. Poor performance.
C. Old age. D. High score.
7. What weakens the brain’s navigational abilities according to Dr. Spiers?
A. Lack of practice. B. Few external landmarks.
C. Living in the countryside. D. Complicated city environment.
8. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Ways to Improve Navigational Skills
B. Reasons to Design Complicated Cities
C. Urban Living Weakens Navigational Skills
D. Turn off Google Maps while Exploring City
根据文章第一段“which tests way-finding skills by asking players to memorise a map showing the location of checkpoints and then measuring how well players can steer a boat to find them.”(它通过要求玩家记住一张显示检查站位置的地图来测试寻路技巧,然后测量玩家能驾驶一艘船找到他们的能力。)
根据下文“Data from American players showed that a 70-year-old who grew up in the countryside had the navigational abilities of an average 60-year-old across the dataset.”(来自美国玩家的数据显示,在乡村长大的70岁老人的导航能力在数据集中相当于平均60岁的人的导航能力。)可知,乡村的年长者表现较差,因此that指代上文的“older people performed relatively poorly”,故选B。
Spiers says that the brain's navigational abilities probably weaken in the city environment because they are not being used as much.”(Dr. Spiers说,在城市环境中,大脑的导航能力可能会减弱,因为它们没有被充分利用。)
根据文章第一段“Growing up in a city has a lifelong negative impact on a person's ability to navigate, according to a vast global survey.”(一项大型全球调查显示,在城市长大会对一个人的导航能力产生终生的负面影响。)

With advanced communication technologics making the iconic British red telephone boxes expendable(可抛弃的), a US firm is all set to bring them back to use. Call boxes would be changed into mini-offices for workers on-the-go and will offer free coffee to subscribers(认购者).
Bar Works Inc's chief executive Jonathan Black, a Briton living in New York, said that his company will renew telephone boxes with fully functional printers, scanners, 25-inch screens and Wi-Fi. Bar Works specializes in offering bar-themed work stations in prime locations, charging customers with a monthly subscription in return for free access to the business and office supplies. The company plans to operate in a similar manner, offering British customers with monthly memberships to "Pod Works" for £19.99($29).
The company will refit telephone boxes in five major British cities and has already rented and changed 15 old call boxes in London and Edinburgh. As expected, they are coming into use by the public in the coming months. “Given the prime location, above all else, of the telephone boxes, the launch is expected to gain at least 10,000 members by the end of 2021. It's an alternative to, say, Starbucks but obviously it provides you with total privacy.” said Black.
Thanks to mobile phones, the red telephone boxes have been effectively made expendable. According to a report by the Daily Mail, retired telephone boxes, especially those damaged deliberately, are sent to a “telephone box graveyard” of sorts, where they take great pains to restore to their former glory before being sold to collectors across the globe. Such is the demand for properly restored telephone boxes, that it is not uncommon for them to be sold for amounts as high as £10, 000.
Despite its setback, in a recent survey, the British red telephone box, which was originally designed in 1920, was voted the greatest British design of all time.
9. What will the red telephone boxes be used for?
A. Mini-offices. B. Mini coffee boxes.
C. Bar-themed call boxes. D. Leisure rooms for workers.
10. What do you know about the renewed telephone boxes?
A. They will be put into use next year.
B. They offer as much privacy as Starbucks.
C. They will be equipped with office supplies.
D. They have been rented in five major British cities.
11. What is Black's attitude towards the launch?
A. Doubtful. B. Confident. C. Cautious. D. Uncertain.
12. What's the purpose of writing about the telephone boxes in this passage?
A. To arouse concern for them. B. To introduce their new role.
C. To expand a larger market. D. To advertise their launch.
【答案】9-12 ACBB

根据第二段第一句“Bar Works Inc’s chief executive Jonathan Black, a Briton living in New York, said that his company will renew telephone boxes with fully functional printers, scanners, 25-inch screens and Wi-Fi.”(Bar Works公司的首席执行官乔纳森·布莱克是一位住在纽约的英国人,他说,他的公司将更新电话亭,配备全功能打印机、扫描仪、25英寸屏幕和Wi-Fi。)
根据第三段最后一句“It’s an alternative to, say, Starbucks but obviously it provides you with total privacy.”(它是星巴克的替代品,但显然它为你提供了完全的隐私。)
根据第一段“With advanced communication technologics making the iconic British red telephone boxes expendable(可抛弃的), a US firm is all set to bring them back to use. Call boxes would be changed into mini-offices for workers on-the-go and will offer free coffee to subscribers(认购者).”(随着先进的通信技术使英国标志性的红色电话亭变得不再重要,一家美国公司准备重新使用它们。
American football, not to be confused with the football called soccer, is the American national sport. ___13___ Games between universities are great social occasions. More than 100, 000 people crowd into the huge stadiums. During a recent college final in the Rose Bowl at Pasadena, California, there were severe earthquake tremors(地震), but nobody noticed.
___14___ Players try to carry the ball over the opponents' line, and then to earn more points by kicking the ball between the upright goal posts above the bar. That is the likeness between the two games.
American football has a reputation for being a violent and dangerous game. ___15___ The players throw themselves at each other fiercely, but today they wear the uniforms and helmets to protect themselves from serious injuries. By comparison, the rugby player has only a thin jersey and a pair of shorts to protect him from his opponents’ boots and tackling.
The Americans are addicted to crazes. Jogging is an example of this. The Americans now have another craze, a game which most other countries call “football”, but which they call soccer. ___16___ It is being run by big business and TV advertisers, who are doing everything they can to sell it to the public. They are employing famous fashion designers to design novel uniforms for the players. They have introduced a musical background to the games and there is a big screen in the stadium which explains to spectators what is happening. ___17___
A. This reputation is not really deserved.
B. The method of scoring in American football is the same as in rugby.
C. It is spreading like wildfire through all the States and gaining popular.
D. They have also changed some of the rules to make the game more exciting.
E. People around the world don't play American football except the Canadians.
F. Famous coaches and players from Europe and South America are interested in it.
G. It developed from the British game of rugby and it excites tremendous enthusiasm.
13. 根据前文“American football, not to be confused with the football called soccer, is the American national sport.”(美式足球(不要和足球混淆)是美国的全国性运动。)可知,此处是讲美式足球,根据后文“Games between universities are great social occasions. More than 100, 000 people crowd into the huge stadiums.”(大学之间的比赛是很好的社交场合。 可知,美式足球非常流行,所以选项G(它是由英国的橄榄球运动发展而来的,它激起了人们极大的热情。)
14. 根据后文“Players try to carry the ball over the opponents’ line, and then to earn more points by kicking the ball between the upright goal posts above the bar.”(球员们试着把球带过对方的底线,然后把球踢到横梁上方的立柱之间以获得更多的分数。)可知,此处是讲美式足球的记分规则,根据后文“That is the likeness between the two games.”(这就是两款比赛的相似之处。) 所以选项B(美式足球的得分方法和橄榄球一样。)
15. 前文“American football has a reputation for being a violent and dangerous game.”(美式足球以暴力和危险著称。)中的reputation对应选项A中的This reputation,根据后文“The players throw themselves at each other fiercely, but today they wear the uniforms and helmets to protect themselves from serious injuries.”(球员们互相猛扑,但今天他们穿上队服和头盔来保护自己不受重伤。) 所以选项A(这个名声实在是名不副实。) 故选A。
16. 根据后文“It is being run by big business and TV advertisers, who are doing everything they can to sell it to the public.”(它是由大企业和电视广告客户运营的,他们正竭尽所能地向公众推销它。) 所以选项C(它像野火一样在各州蔓延,而且越来越受欢迎。)
17. 根据前文“They have introduced a musical background to the games and there is a big screen in the stadium which explains to spectators what is happening.”(他们在比赛中引入了音乐背景,体育场里有一个大屏幕向观众解释正在发生的事情。) 所以选项D(他们还修改了一些规则,使游戏更刺激。)

I’m delighted to tell you that with the2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games approaching, our city government has recently launched a series of activities aimed to popularize ice and snow sports on campuses. tell you that引导宾语从句。 使用高分词汇be delighted to,approach, launched a series of activities以及aimed to do。
First of all, campaigns which can arouse students’ interest in ice and snow sports are being held at schools. 使用高分词汇arouse students’ interest in sth。
Not only will activities promote ice and snow sports but they can help students to strengthen their bodies.该句使用not only…but also“不仅……而且”,位于句首,采用部分倒装。使用高分词汇strengthen their bodies。
六、读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Eric was working in a selling business. He had been on the road visiting people for more than a month without going home. He couldn’t wait to get back to see his wife and children. Mother’s Day was approaching, and he usually tried to make it “back home”, but this year he was just too busy and too tired. The day when he was driving in a small town, he saw a flower shop. He said to himself, “I know what I will do, I'll send my mother some roses.”
He stopped and went into the flower shop and saw a boy talking to the salesgirl in it. “How many roses can I get for five dollars. Ms.?” the boy asked. The salesgirl was trying to explain that roses were expensive. Maybe the boy would be happy with something else.
“No I have to have roses,” he said. “my mom was badly sick last year and I didn’t get to spend much time with her. I want to get something special. It has to be red roses, because that is her favorite.” He was stubborn.
The salesgirl in the shop looked up at Eric and was still shaking her head. Something inside of Eric was touched by the boy’s voice. He wanted to get those roses so badly. Eric had been blessed (幸运的) in his business, and he winked at the salesgirl and silently said that he would pay for the boys roses.
The salesgirl looked at the boy and said, “OK, I will give you a dozen red roses for your dollars.” The boy almost jumped into the air. He took the flowers and ran down the store. It was worth more than five dollars just to see that kind of excitement.
Eric ordered his own flowers and asked the salesgirl to have it delivered to his mother. After that, with a relief he drove down the road. Not long after his driving, he saw the boy walking to a graveyard (墓地).
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Eric pulled in and followed the boy.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eric went into the car in tears.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Eric pulled in and followed the boy. The boy went up to a small monument, and knelt down. He carefully put the flowers before it and began to sob, “Dear mom, I love you. But how I regret I didn’t tell it when you were with me. I knew you loved roses, but why didn’t I send the flowers to you when I could still see you and talk with you? Now, you have gone to another world. How I regret I didn't tell you I love you so much!”
Eric went into the car in tears. His mother’s home wasn’t far from the place, but he hadn’t seen her for too long. He didn’t have a talk with her for too long a time and say how much he loved her for so long a time. He started the car and drove up to the flower shop. He asked the salesgirl to give him the flowers directly because he wanted to send them personally to his mom.
②与某人交谈:talk with sb./ talk to sb./ chat with sb.
③送:send/ give/ present
[高分句型1] He asked the salesgirl to give him the flowers directly because he wanted to send them personally to his mom. because引导原因状语从句。
[高分句型2] But how I regret I didn't tell it when you were with me.
