Life can be unfair, but it doesn’t have to be filled with unhappiness. A couple from Pingzi village, Yunnan Province, shows that: beating all the difficulties to find love, build a family and pull themselves out of poverty (贫穷).
At the age of 6, Zhang Shundong lost his right arm and seriously damaged his feet. Later, his lower legs were amputated (截肢). Li Guoxiu is his wife. She was born without arms in a poor family. Li learned how to work with her feet when she was young — cooking, washing clothes, mopping the floor and feeding livestock.
In spring, Zhang fetched water from the mountain, while Li planted rice. In autumn, Zhang picked the corn cobs (玉米棒) with his left hand and put them in a basket that Li carried on her back. But things became more difficult when their two children were born.
Their daughter, Zhang Guanqiong, 27, remembers the life in the past. “I did chores and take care of my brother when I was 5 or 6 years old. I always wanted to grow faster to help the family,” she said. Her brother, Zhang Guanyun, 25, said his parents worked on the farm from early morning until deep into the night to earn more money.
Now the daughter is a math teacher at a primary school. The son gave up his job this year to take care of his father. Zhang Guanyun said his parents no longer do hard farm work. They sell corn seeds and are developing skills to help others sell local products online.
In February this year, Zhang and Li became national representatives (全国代表) for poverty-alleviation (脱贫) and family role models for disabled people.
