On January 22,2022,the British-Belgian 19-year-old,Zara Rutherford, successfully landed her two-seat microlight aircraft back at the Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport, from where she had departed 155 days ago, fulfilling her dream to be the youngest woman to fly around the world solo.
“I feel excited not only to break the Guinness World Record, but also to diminish the gender gap by 11 years between the current youngest male record holder Travis Ludlow,18 at the time of his record, and the previous female record holder Shaesta Waez, who was 30 when she completed her 'Dreams Soar' around-the-world flight.” Rutherford wrote on her blog.
Rutherford's journey crossing five continents and 52 countries began on August 18,2021.She encountered numerous unexpected delays along the way. They included an unscheduled stop in Redding,California, due to wildfires and a month-long stop in Nome,Alaska,to renew her Russian visa. She also faced several challenges in the air. When flying from Iceland to Greenland,Rutherford lost radio contact with her ground team for much of the 3-hour flight. The incidents also resulted in her having to cross over Russia in sub-zero temperatures. The hardest part was flying over Siberia—it was extremely cold and if the engine broke down, she'd be hours away from rescue.Despite the severe difficulties, the determined young pilot never gave up on her dream.
Rutherford grew up around airplanes. Her British father flies commercially, while her Belgian mother is a recreational pilot. The young girl began learning how to fly at age 14 and obtained her aviator's(飞行员)license in 2020.With her goal of flying around the world accomplished,Rutherford now has her sights set even higher. She wants to become an astronaut and explore space.
She hopes that her journey will encourage more young women to pursue careers in aviation.Currently the number of female pilots is just 5 percent.Rutherford says,“It's an easy thing to say,but just go for it.If you don't try and see how high you can fly, then you'll never know.”
24.What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 2 probably mean?

25.Why did Rutherford have to stop in Nome?
A.The wildfires were too fierce. B.Her Russian visa was due.
C.The weather was too severe. D.Her engine broke down.
26.What's the purpose of paragraph 4?
A.To switch to a new topic. B.To summarize her achievements.
C.To illustrate her admirable talents. D.To add some background information.
27.What does the passage try to convey?
A.Dream big,aim high. B.Life is not all roses.
C.Not to advance is to go back. D.The greatest talkers, the least doers.

The over 48,000 orange trees in Seville,Spain, not only fill the city's air with the pleasant smell of orange blossoms in spring, but they also produce over 16,500 tons of fruit every winter.Though that makes the capital of southern Spain's Andalusia region Europe's top orange-producing city, the fruit is too sour to be consumed fresh. While some of the produce is used to make orange jam and an alcoholic drink, most of it ends up in Seville's landfills(填埋场).However, that may change soon thanks to a clever idea to use the oranges to produce clean energy.
The trial program is being launched by the city's council and park department in cooperation with Emasesa,Seville's water supply and sanitation(卫生)division.Juice from 38.6 tons of oranges will be left to ferment(发酵)in a specialized facility. The methane(甲烷)released from the fermented liquid will be captured and used to drive a generator to produce clean power. The officials estimate the test run will produce about 1,500 kWh of energy—enough to run one of Emasesa's water purification plants. To ensure there is no waste, the orange skins, peels, and flesh will be used as fertilizer.
“It's not just about saving money. The oranges are a problem for the city, and we're producing added value from waste,” said Benigno Lopez, head of Emasesa's environmental department.
If successful,by 2023,the city hopes to recycle all the oranges and add the electricity produced back into its power transmission network. In trial runs, one ton of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy—enough to cover the daily electricity needs of five homes. The project team estimates that if all the fruit is recycled,it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.
“This project will help us to reach our targets for reducing emissions, energy self-sufficiency,and the circular economy,” Juan Espadas Cejas, mayor of Seville, said in the press conference announcing the trial scheme.
28.What do we know about oranges in Seville from the first paragraph?
A.They are usually picked in spring.
B.They are mostly used to make jams and juice.
C.They are not recommended to be eaten fresh.
D.They make Seville the world's top orange-producing city.
29.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Different uses of oranges.
B.How to produce power from juice.
C.An introduction to the trial program.
D.Why the trial program was put forward.
30.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Seville hasn't carried out the trial program yet.
B.The electricity produced will be used to purify water.
C.The electricity produced will go to Seville's power plants.
D.Seville may need to recycle 14,600 tons of oranges to power 73,000homes.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Seville Is Turning Waste into Wealth
B.Seville Is Seeking Market for Oranges
C.Seville Is Contributing to Global Warming
D.Seville Is Dealing with the Electricity Shortage

It's late in the evening, time to close the book and turn off the computer. You're done for the day. What you may not realize, however,is that the learning process actually continues in your dreams.
It might sound like science fiction, but researchers are increasingly focusing on the relationship between the knowledge and skills our brains absorb during the day and the often strange imaginings they generate at night.Scientists have found that dreaming about a task we've learned is associated with improved performance in that activity(suggesting that there's some truth to the popular idea that we're "getting" a foreign language once we begin dreaming in it). What's more, dreaming may be an essential part of understanding, organizing and retaining what we learn. While we sleep, research indicates, the brain replays the patterns of activity it experienced during waking hours, allowing us to enter what one psychologist calls a neural(神经的)virtual reality.
A vivid example of such replay can be seen in a video researchers made recently about sleep disorders. They taught a series of dance moves to patients suffering from sleepwalking and related conditions. They then videotaped the subjects as they slept.Lying in bed, eyes closed, one female patient on the tape performed the dance moves she learned earlier—“ the first direct and unambiguous demonstration of behavioral replay of a recently learned skill during human sleep,” writes lead author Delphine Oudiette.
Of course, most of us are not quite so energetic during sleep—but our brains are busy nonetheless. While our bodies are at rest, scientists theorize, our brains are extracting(提取)what's important from the information and events we've recently encountered, then integrating that data into the vast store of what we already know—perhaps explaining why dreams are such an odd mixture of fresh experiences and old memories.A dream about something we've just learned seems to be a sign that the new knowledge has been processed effectively. In a 2010 study published in the journal Current Biology, researchers at Harvard Medical School reported that college students who dreamed about a computer maze task they had learned showed a 10-fold improvement in their ability to navigate the maze compared to participants who did not dream about the task.
Robert Stickgold, one of the Harvard researchers, suggests that studying right before bedtime or taking a nap following a study session in the afternoon might increase the odds of dreaming about the material.Think about that as your head hits the pillow tonight.
32.What happens when one enters a dream state?
A.The body continues to act as if the sleeper were awake.
B.The neural activity of the brain will become more intense.
C.The brain once again experiences the learning activities of the day.
D.The brain behaves as if it were playing a virtual reality video game.
33.What does the brain do while we are sleeping?
A.It replaces old information with new material.
B.It processes and absorbs newly acquired data.
C.It classifies information and places it in different files.
D.It systematizes all the information collected during the day.
34.Which of the following can enhance learning according to Robert Stickgold?
A.Staying up late before finally going to bed.
B.Having a period of sleep right after studying.
C.Having a dream about anything you are interested in.
D.Thinking about the chances of dreaming about the material.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.How study affects people's dreams.
B.Why people learn more after sleeping.
C.What time students should study and sleep.
D.How dreaming may lead to improved learning outcomes.

The whole class burst out laughing as Mohi rushed into the classroom. He was a strange sight. His half-buttoned white shirt revealed a red striped pajama(睡衣)top underneath, and instead of white school shoes,he had on a pair of bright green sandals(拖鞋)that were two sizes too big.The physics teacher's hand froze in the middle of writing a formula on the blackboard.
Mohi mumbled,“Sorry, teacher," and hurried to his seat.Mr.Tan glared at the rest of the students. The chuckles quickly faded away.Mohi's classmates always looked forward to Mondays.Nine times out of ten, they would be entertained by Mohi's late arrival and his odd appearance which usually included inappropriate clothing. That day,it was the pajama top and green sandals.
Mohi lived just a street away from the school. He walked to school daily.Students passing by in buses would yell his name together just to see him jump and stop in his tracks. When he spotted the merry bunch in the bus,he would wave good-naturedly.Although Mohi was likable,he was too lost in his own thoughts to make friends. His classmates found him amusing but they ignored him most of the time.Only Hamed, who sat next to Mohi, tried to be his friend.
The following Monday,Mohi did not turn up at school. His classmates were a little disappointed but quickly forgot about him. After school,Hamed decided to walk over to Mohi's house to check on him.As he approached the gate,he could hear violin music.Mohi must be listening to music,he thought. The gate was not locked.Hamed let himself in.He called Mohi's name a few times but there was no response. The music played on.Hamed peered in through a window. His eyes widened in surprise. In the middle of the living room,Mohi was playing the violin. His eyes were closed in concentration as he drew the bow over the strings expertly. He played perfectly,so much so that it sounded like a recording.Hamed left quietly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
When Teachers' Day came around,Hamed had a plan.
As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence.

30.D。由第四段中的“In trial runs, one ton of oranges produced 50 kWh of clean energy—enough to cover the daily electricity needs of five homes...if all the fruit is recycled,it will produce enough energy to power as many as 73,000 residences.” 从第二段第一句话:“The trial program is being launched.….”
第二段最后一句“While we sleep, research indicates, the brain replays the patterns of activity it experienced during waking hours, allowing us to enter what one psychologist calls a neural(神经的)virtual reality.(研究表明,当我们睡觉的时候,大脑会回放它在清醒时间所经历的活动模式,让我们进入一位心理学家所说的神经虚拟现实。)”中的“the brain replays the patterns of activity it experienced during waking hours(大脑会重复它在清醒时所经历的活动模式)”,与C选项“大脑再次经历白天的学习活动”为同义转述。故选C。
33.B。 第四段第二句“While our bodies are at rest, scientists theorize, our brains are extracting(提取)what's important from the information and events we've recently encountered, then integrating that data into the vast store of what we already know(科学家推理,当我们的身体处于休息状态时,我们的大脑正在从我们最近遇到的信息和事件中提取重要的东西,并且把这些信息存入我们已有的记忆库中)”中的extract和integrate(提取和整合)对应B选项中的process and absorb(加工和吸收/并入),故选 B。
根据第二段信息以及最后一段中的“Robert Stickgold, one of the Harvard researchers, suggests that studying right before bedtime or taking a nap following a study session in the afternoon might increase the odds of dreaming about the material.(研究员Robert Stickgold建议,在睡觉前学习或在下午的研究会议后打个盹可能会增加梦到这种材料的可能性。)”
根据第二段中的“Scientists have found that dreaming about a task we've learned is associated with improved performance in that activity(suggesting that there's some truth to the popular idea that we're ‘getting' a foreign language once we begin dreaming in it). What's more, dreaming may be an essential part of understanding, organizing and retaining what we learn.”
36.G。 前文“It can be very easy to stick with what you know, instead of trying to meet people who are different from you.(做自己熟悉的事,而不是去结识与你不同的人,这很容易。)”和选项G中的“trying to understand people from other countries can help you experience more(试着去了解来自其他国家的人可以帮助你体验更多)”构成转折关系,对应选项G中的“however”,所以选项G(然而,试着去理解来自其他国家的人可以帮助你体验更多。)
37.D。根据后文“This includes biases(偏见)about your own cultural background.(这包括对自己文化背景的偏见。)”
38.E。根据前文“Talk to someone from a different cultural background.(和来自不同文化背景的人交谈。)”可知,此处是讲和来自不同文化背景的人交谈,所以选项E(不要直接问他们问题,把他们当成朋友。)
40.B。根据后文“Stereotyping(模式化)people from different cultural backgrounds can impact their quality of life and opportunities.(对来自不同文化背景的人形成成见会影响他们的生活质量和机会。)”
41.A。 I think we'd better drop the subject.
44.B。根据下文中的“I can't teach you”可知,此处指上了三次课后,他放弃了。
45.C。根据下文中的“To be honest…Actually,I thought I was afraid of many things”及最后一段中的“fears”可知,此处指教练说作者什么都不害怕。
that's news to me“我一点都不知道(表示惊讶或生气)”。
49.C。根据下文中的“a dog trapped in the wire fence”可知,狗被困在铁丝网上,Graeme应是在帮助狗获得自由。 例如:Art frees the imagination.
51.A。根据下文中的“That's it”“I'm learning to drive...my family.”
53.D。根据下文中的“a professional with nerves of steel”可知,此处指作者聘请了一位专业人士。
responsible(负责任的)与前面的“grown-up(成熟的)”平行。

When Teachers' Day came around,Hamed had a plan.It was the tradition of the school to have a concert for the teachers.Every class had to contribute an item.Hamed convinced the class to let Mohi perform and he succeeded. On the day of the concert, both the teachers and students were surprised to see the school's “clumsiest" student walking on stage with a violin.Though hesitant at first,he gradually became more and more confident. As he went on with the performance, all the audience listened attentively, immersing themselves in the wonderful notes.
As the last note ended, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. After the performance, shy and silent as Mohi was,he gave Hamed a big hug.Love may be silent, but it was always there.Since then,Mohi and Hamed have been best friends. With the encouragement of Hamed,Mohi has pursued his dream of being a musician. Not only do friends keep us company but they also help us to be a better self.

W:Well,I think the colors of the first one are a bit weak, though the flower images are nice.
M:Well,I'd rather say the colors are elegant.
W:I don't think they look dynamic enough for our business.Look at this one, which is my favorite. It's pretty colorful and can attract a lot of attention.
M:I think it's a bit strong, although it stresses the idea that you can give flowers at any time.
W:OK.Let's put these two aside and have a look at the third design. What are your thoughts?
M:It wouldn't suit our business at all. It's too abstract and too cold.
W:Yeah.I don't think it's good either. Now back to the first two. So,as you think the second one is strong, how about if we ask for a slight change to the colors?
M:I guess it would help.I'll go and call LogoForum now.
(Text 10)
W:Once, one of my teachers asked us what our favorite memory was. Some described winning a contest;others described a time when they were praised by their teachers. My answer, however, got a big laugh, because I said I felt best when I first learned to ride a bike. That's because it improved the relationship between my sister and me.
I often had quarrels with my sister when I was young. We soon fell into a bad relationship. She was absolutely a sister in name. One day,I received a birthday gift from my uncle - a bike.I was very happy but I didn't know how to ride it.My father had no time to teach me,so I decided to learn by myself.Although I tried several times,I still couldn't manage it.I was so disappointed that I threw away my bike and began to cry.At that time,my sister approached me.At first,I thought she would laugh at me.Surprisingly, she gently picked my bike up and offered to help me.Within three hours, she helped me learn to ride without any quarrels.Since that day,my sister has been my real sister.
