Officer Jonathan Smith, 30, was called to Bond Lake near Lewiston, New York, after receiving reports of a little dog that had fallen in about 50 yards from the shore. In this heart-in-mouth footage(镜头) captured by a fellow officer’s bodycam(人体摄像头),the brave police officer threw off some equipment before dashing out onto the ice, without any caution for his own safety.
The owner had been walking the 10-month-old dog around the lake on January 5 when Kona spotted a distant flock of geese landing on the water and ran towards them. Horrified, Kona’s owner watched as the dog fell into the freezing water at the edge of the ice.
In an email to Lewiston Police Department, the owner wrote: “Although she is a strong swimmer, there was zero chance of her getting back out onto the ice and she began to panic and tire quickly.”
The witness nearby called 911 right away, and 15 minutes later, Officer Smith and two other officers from the Police Department arrived. Without hesitation or rescue equipment, the officer removed his uniform and gun belt and ran over the ice towards the exhausted Kona. When he got close enough to her, Officer Smith grabbed the dog and pulled her from the water so she was able to run back over the ice to her owner.
“Kona and I and everybody that loves her are extremely grateful for his selflessness and courage,” the owner wrote. “His professionalism and bravery should be applauded. I have witnessed countless acts of selfless heroism, Officer Jon Smith’s actions rank high in my book.” The owner was an author, who has written many books.

Many animals depend upon sound to find food, detect enemies and communicate with one another. These species understandably suffer when loud motorways cut through their habitats. Some deal with by singing more loudly, some change the timing of their calls to occur when fewer people are driving, others just move to quieter places.
All of these actions come with significant costs attached and scientists have long documented the ecological damage caused by noise pollution. It has always been assumed, however, that noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Ali Akbar Ghotbi-Ravandi, a botanist at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, has showed that plants suffer too.
That plants can be hampered indirectly by noise pollution has never been in doubt. Since most flowering species depend upon pollinators(传粉者)and most fruit-bearing species need animals to spread their seeds, it is obvious that if these animal partners are harmed by noise then their botanical counterparts will do badly, too. What has remained unknown is whether or not plants themselves suffer directly from noise pollution.
Sounds are pressure waves transmitted through gases, liquids and solids, Scientists have previously assumed that plants may be able to sense these waves as they are struck by them. A number of experiments have confirmed this in recent years—plants bombed with ultrasound (超声波)in the lab have shown a range of bad responses including the expression of stress-related genes, slow growth and reduced production of seeds.
Yet bombing plants with ultrasound is not the same as growing them in the presence of actual traffic noise. To this end, Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi decided to set up an experiment to study precisely this question.
28. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To introduce the topic. B. To draw readers’ interest.
C.To stress the damage of noise.D. To state sound’s effect on animals.
29. What does the underlined word “hampered” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Killed. B.Harmed. C.Attracted.D. Frightened.
30.What is still unknown to scientists?
A.How some animals respond to noise.
B. That noise isn’t a problem unique to animals.
C. Whether plants suffer directly from noise pollution.
D. That most plants depend on animals to spread seeds.
31. What will probably be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. Ways to solve the problems of traffic noise.
B.Differences between ultrasound and traffic noise.
C. Dr Ghotbi-Ravandi’s achievements on plants study.
D. The experiment about the influence of traffic noise on plants.

Some events have been added to the 2024 Olympics, with surfing, breakdancing and sport climbing among the recent additions. With the m co me a group of terms that are foreign to the French language. For some French-language purists, it’s too much to bear to rely on English to praise surfers on their “noseriding”—standing on the front of the board. They’ve decided they need a French solution.
The French government has created a team of language experts devoted to promoting the national language. They will meet periodically over the next couple of years to identify and define new sports terms. The French battle against the influence of other languages isn’t new. In 1994, the Toubon law was passed, forcing the use of French in all government publications, contracts and advertisements.Yet it contained several loopholes(漏洞),which allow brands and companies to extensively use English. As a result, anglicisms(从英语中借用的词)are becoming more obvious.
Julie Neveux, linguistics(语言学)professor at Sorbonne University in Paris, said anglicisms are “sometimes estimated at just under 5% of the present vocabulary, but they are disturbing because they show that we follow an economic and cultural model other than our own.” They are particularly present in sports competitions and events, during which athletes from around the world are used to communicating in English. “Sport was one of the first areas to be globalized,” said sports historian Michael Attali. “This phenomenon has strengthened English as the official language.”
Despite their best efforts, no committee has successfully prevented English from infiltrating(渗透)everyday language.By the time French officials agreed on a translation and its definition, the English version has already spread throughout the nation. “Similar committees have been put in place in the past, but nothing has changed so far,” said Attali.
“There are far fewer anglicisms in French than there are French words in English,” said Neveux, adding these exchanges should not be seen as a threat. “All living languages exist by borrowing from each other. Languages only exist thanks to their impurity.”
32. What will a team of language experts do?
A. Make French much purer.
B. Bring English and French together.
C. Decide upon some new sports terms.
D.Promote the spread of French in the world.
33. What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.English words. B. French words.
C.Newly created words.D. Anglicisms
34. What’s the result of previous efforts to stop English from infiltrating French?
A.Successful. B.Fruitless.
C.Unmentioned. D. Unimportant.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. All languages should be preserved.
B. English is more popular than French.
C. Neveux is positive about the impurity of language.
D. The exchanges between two languages can be avoided.

One of the biggest themes at this year’s CES tech show was electric and autonomous transportation—cars, trucks, bikes, boats. And, it turns out, tractors.
Farm-equipment giant Deere showed a new autonomous tractor with56attached tillage(耕作) tool at CES. For those not familiar57farm life, Julian Sanchez, Deere’s director of emerging technologies, says that tillage is an58(importance), time-consuming, and tiring process of preparing the soil for next season’s planting. If you don’t do it fast, the ground could freeze. And59(effective) tilling means some seeds won’t take and yield(产量)60(drop).
While automatic driving has been on tractors for several61(year), Deere’s autonomous tractor can operate without a driver in the cab. The tractor can detect obstacles62might damage the attached tiller. And, he says, it can run around the clock, saving time and labor, and improving productivity by as much as 20%.
If the tilling is too shallow, you don't break up the straw too deep, and the tractor moves too63(slow), increasing fuel costs. 第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was four years old in 1993,when my family emigrated(移民)from the United Arab Emirates to Toronto. Young enough to be changed by my new home, but old enough to know I was different from everyone around me. I was the only Arab and only Muslim in my junior kindergarten class. Beyond those obvious differences, Canadian life proved to be quite distinct in other ways. And I discovered another surprise that December.
Overnight, everything was suddenly covered in red and green. My classmates talked excitedly about cookies and what gifts they’d asked Santa for that Christmas. At some point, I must have asked myself, “What is Christmas?” There’s nothing quite like it in the Muslim world. The closest comparison might be Eidal-Adha, which translates from Arabic to “Festival of sacrifice”. While both holidays show the same spirit of sharing with the less fortunate and spending time with loved ones, Eid meant new clothes and a family dinner, and that was about it. No tree decorated with ornaments(装饰物),and no gifts covered in wrapping paper.
Christmas was completely foreign to me, but then my parents unexpectedly informed me that Santa would be paying us a visit on Christmas Eve. “But aren’t we Muslim?” I asked.
“Yes, but Santa loves all children equally and gets them all gifts,” my mother replied.
So on that first Christmas Eve in Canada, she hung oversized red and white stockings, each one customized with our names, off our bedposts. I have a distinct memory of the restless expectation that kept me awake long after bedtime and my joy when I got up on Christmas morning to find my stocking filled with gifts.
Still in my pyjamas(睡衣),I ran over to the kitchen to tell my parents that Santa had indeed visited us last night. I asked if they’d seen him, and Mom said, “Of course!” Mom offered Santa a cup of coffee, as is the Arab custom when hosting guests. He needed the energy for the long night ahead, she told me.
When I returned to school after the holidays, I had a story to share with my classmates. Santa had visited me too! I could show off gifts while other kids showed off theirs.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
My parents kept our Christmas tradition going for years, until I was too old to believe in Santa anymore.
As an adult, I’ve come to realize creating a sense of belonging is joining in traditions.
