In 2009, Shawn Seipler worked for an American technology company. His job required him to travel and visit companies all over America. One evening, he was sitting in his hotel room. He began to wonder what happened to the soap (肥皂) in the bathroom once he left the hotel. There was no way that it could be left in the room for someone else to use. Curious, he asked the hotel manager and was told that the used soap was thrown away and replaced.
Shawn could not sleep that night. A quick Internet search informed him that there were about 4.6 million hotel rooms in America. If 60 per cent of these were used every night, over one million bars of soap would be thrown away every day. Was this really necessary? The young man went on to read reports about the importance of handwashing. He learnt that thousands of children were dying every day from diseases related to bad hygiene (卫生). If the children washed their hands with soap, the number of deaths could be reduced by half. The following day, Shawn left his well-paid job. He approached the Holiday Inn Hotel in Orlando and asked if he could take away their used soap. He transported it to his home, where he and his relatives began to break it down, so it could be used again.
Shawn started his charity. Clean The World, and began distributing (分发) his recycled soap to children all over the world. His another big task was to contact other hotels, so he could take away their used soap. He found that he was really doing the hotels a big favour. Not only was he putting their soap to good use, but he was also preventing millions of bars of used soap from ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋地) every year. His charity was able to raise money by charging the hotels for this service. In return, the hotels could tell everyone they were part of an amazing new charity.
Today, the charity has offices overseas and operates in China, India and Canada. Many of the biggest hotel groups in the world are working with Clean The World, helping to save lives.
24. What troubled Shawn when he was in a hotel room in 2009?
A. His tiring travels. B. The waste of soap.
C. His sleeping problems. D. The poor service of the hotel.
25. What can we learn about Clean The World?
A. It intends to sell soap to poor people.
B. It helps hotels make a lot of money.
C. It is a win-win for itself and hotels.
D. It tries to create environment-friendly soap.
26. Which of the following can best describe Shawn?
A. Responsible and courageous. B. Public-spirited and caring.
C. Curious and humorous. D. Far-sighted and strict.
27. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Hotels coming together B. Recycling soap to save lives

A homeowner in Massachusetts had a surprise visitor that came down the chimney (烟囱)... and it wasn’t Santa. A barred owl (横斑林鸮) was sitting in the fireplace in a home in the city of Bolton, staring at the homeowner. Not sure how to deal with the bird, the homeowner called Mass Wildlife.
“This individual was very calm and we simply reached in, gently grabbed it, and placed it in the animal carrier,” Mass Wildlife Central District Manager Todd Olanyk says. Before releasing the owl, Olanyk examined the bird for injuries and found none. “It was released just outside the house where it was found,” he says.
Wildlife experts say barred owls may find chimneys enticing during this time of year because they begin laying eggs from February through May. Since they don’t build their own nests, they look for holes. Mass Wildlife has also received similar reports of this happening with other birds. To help prevent wild animals like birds and bats from entering your home, Mass Wildlife suggests placing a metal cap with a screen on your chimney. Chimneys aren’t the only places that pose a danger to birds and other wildlife.
According to a 2014 study, 27% of the more than 100 uncapped bollards (路桩) had dead birds inside them. Bollards are used for traffic control or building security. They’re usually capped but in this case, many of these posts were left open. They also looked at 88 open pipes used as gate posts and 11% contained dead birds. In another study on a nearby highway, 14% of the open pipes had dead birds. “The birds likely investigate the open pipe as a potential nesting site, and once inside they cannot climb the smooth metal or extend their wings to fly out. Alternatively, birds may attempt to land on the upright open pipes and then fall in,” the researchers wrote.
28. What did Olanyk find about the owl?
A. It looked anxious. B. It was looking for a baby.
C. It was in good shape. D. It missed its owner.
29. What does the underlined word “enticing” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Narrow. B. Attractive. C. Choking. D. Confusing.
30. Which measure would Mass Wildlife agree with to protect birds?
A. Making large carriers. B. Cleaning chimneys regularly.
C. Fixing cameras on bollards. D. Placing caps on open pipes.
31. What is the purpose of this text?
A. To tell a story. B. To introduce a bird.
C. To analyze a phenomenon. D. To advertise an organization.

Surfing has deep roots, but for the first time, surfers are competing for medals at the Summer Olympics. At Tsurigasaki Beach, 40 miles from Tokyo, they’re also riding big waves ahead of a storm.
“The incoming tide (潮汐) push over the afternoon does look to provide a lot of fun waves,” reports Kurt Korte, the official surf forecaster for the Tokyo Olympics. He works for Surfline, a company based in Huntington Beach, California. He says while it might rain at Tsurigasaki Beach, it should be a great day for the surfing finals at the Olympics.
While new to the Olympics, surfing has a long history. In pre-Inca Peru and wherever there’s been a nearby ocean, people have long been surfing in one form or another, Ancient warriors (武士) in Tahiti and Samoa used to train by surfing. In Polynesia, surfing was also considered an art form. But modern surfing became popular near the start of the 20th century in Hawaii.
Getting surfing to the Olympics was a dream of Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku more than a century ago. Decades before Hawaii became a U.S. state, he earned five Olympic medals for swimming, starting in 1912. Kahanamoku had grown up surfing with his brothers in Waikiki. A news reporter in the 1960’s once asked him, “Duke, was it more of a thrill (激动) for you to win those Olympic Games, or ride some of those big waves you used to ride? “I think surfing is much more to me, the greatest thrill of my life,” he answered.
Former professional surfer Matt Warshaw said, “Unlike most other sports in competition at the Olympics, so much of surfing depends on Mother Nature:the wind and the waves.” At the moment, these surfers are hoping for some sick waves for the Olympic finals. But with the ocean, you never know.
32. What do Korte’s words suggest about the day?
A. It will be sunny and very hot. B. It will bring satisfactory waves.
C. It will rain out the surfing event. D. It will be great for swimming.
33. What can be learned about surfing in history?
A. It was considered an art form in Tahiti.
B. It was introduced to Hawaii from Polynesia.
C. It was a type of training for Samoan warriors.
D. It was a highly competitive sport in pre-Inca Peru.
34. What did Kahanamoku think of his Olympic medals?
A. They were a dream coming true. B. They changed his view on himself.
C. They paled in comparison with surfing. D. They inspired him to pursue other sports.
35. When was the text probably written?
A. In the later part of the 1960’s. B. During the Tokyo Olympics.
C. At the start of the 20th century. D. Before Hawaii joined the U.S.

I spent two weeks live with my grandma in her small village during this summer holiday. There were many neighbors and I just waved and said “hello” occasionally to themselves. One day, it rained heavily but strong winds blew throughout the day. Unfortunate, our wooden fence (栅栏) was broken in half. I had been thinking of getting it repairing but I didn’t know whom I could turn. The next morning, when I go to the yard, to my surprise, I saw the fence had already been fixed, what was the result of our neighbors’ hard work.
1—5 BBACC 6—10 ABCCB 11—15 CAABC 16—20 ACBCB
(Text1)
M: Have you read The Careless Tourist?
W: Yes. The story is quite exciting in parts, I suppose. The words in the book are good, but the characters are all so unpleasant.
(Text 2)
M: Please buy some bottled water for me while you are at the store.
W: I’m not going to any grocery store. I’m going to see Anne Mary, but don’t worry, I will stop at the gas station.
(Text 3)
M: Well, I think we’ve got everything in the car.
W: I thought the tent wasn’t going to fit. And the sleeping bags and fishing equipment take up a lot of space, too.
(Text 4)
M: You’ve just finished your first-week nursing, haven’t you? What was it like?
W: I knew it would be hard work and it would leave me with little energy for other things. But I was surprised how interesting it was and there was so much to learn.
(Text 5)
M: I saw that there was someone new moving in.
W: So did you talk to the newcomer?
M: No, she seemed very busy when I saw her. She had a lot of things. I didn’t even see the workers moving in any furniture or bags when I went by—just boxes and more boxes.
(Text 6)
M: Jenny, congratulations!
W: Thank you, Mike.
M: What happened? I thought you’d be pretty happy.
W: Oh, it’s just all those years of struggle becoming “an overnight success”. Everyone said to me “Lucky you”, but it’s only hard work that brings me success. And the record company wants the next record with better songs. But I’ve no idea about songs now. In fact, I’m wondering whether I’ve used up all my inspiration.
M: Come on, Jenny. Take it easy. You just need a break.
(Text 7)
W: Can I enter the competition on my own?
M: Interesting question. No... the aim of the competition is to encourage young people to share ideas and work together. So you need a coach.
W: Does the coach have to work in our school?
M: No, but this person does need to be working in a school, for example, it could be the French assistant in Woods High School.
W: How do we register for the competition?
M: It’s easy. Visit our website and fill in the application form online. We accept neither emails nor application letters.
(Text 8)
M: Welcome to Magnificent Service.
W: Hello, I would like to hire a large tent. My daughter’s celebrating her 18th birthday on June 6th!
M: I’d be happy to help. Could you give me some details about the guest numbers?
W: Well, I told her to limit numbers to around 50 guests, but she would like to invite double that number. Finally, we decided to split the difference and settle on 80 rather than 100!
M: OK. Can you give me an idea of your budget?
W: Yes, I’m thinking of spending between £400 and £800.
M: Well, the hire comes to £450. So, now as to the cost of fittings and lighting, the cost of carpet will add on another £150; with regard to the lighting, it’s another £90. Then there’s the furniture: tables and chairs and so on. £3 per chair and each table costs £4.
W: OK, so I’m still just within my budget.
M: When would you like us to set up the tent?
W: Well, the birthday is on June 6th, so ideally a day beforehand.
(Text 9)
M: Good afternoon. Can I help you?
W: I hope so! My friends are coming over to visit me next month and I need to find a place for them to stay. Can you recommend anywhere?
M: Yes. What about Gardens Hotel? It’s right in the city centre.
W: How much is it per night, please?
M: Quite reasonable given the location, $50, and that is inclusive of a continental breakfast. Unfortunately, lunch and dinner are not included. The hotel does have a very fine restaurant, though, and I would thoroughly recommend the buffet dinner there. It’s also home to space for conferences, trade shows and celebrations.
W: Is there anywhere else?
M: Certainly. Belfield Hotel is always a popular choice. That’s too far from the city centre. But the subway station is a few minutes’ walk away. $55 per night. There is a $10 discount offered to customers who’ve booked online. Well, you should also consider Maple View. It’s centrally located, so it’s close to the shops. The price per night is only $28 on weekdays, though an additional $12 is charged on weekends and bank holidays.
W: Sounds like great value for money.
(Text 10) W
I’m going to give you some instructions about the class trip tomorrow. We are going to leave school tomorrow at 7:30. Please make sure that you are here fifteen minutes earlier so that we can leave on time. This means that most of you will have to get up by 6:00. Please make sure that you are wearing comfortable shoes. I know it’s been very hot but a jacket is necessary and it may get cold in the evening. You can ask the teachers if you need a blanket. It is unnecessary for you to bring cameras—you won’t have time to take photos. As you know, the aim of our trip is for you to draw a map of the village we are going to visit. So this evening you could read your notes on preparing maps carefully. You will be working in pairs and each pair will be working on a different section of the village. Three teachers will be there to help you. After the hard work of the day, you should be able to enjoy a relaxing evening. There is going to be a performance Romeo and Juliet. This is going to take place in a big square. So we shall not be back in school till after midnight.

This individual was very calm和Olanyk examined the bird for injuries and found none可知,这只横斑林鸮非常镇静,也没有受伤,状况良好。
根据划线词后的because they begin laying eggs from February through May. Since they don’t build their own nests, they look for holes可知,横斑林鸮不筑巢,而是找洞去孵蛋。
They’re usually capped but in this case, many of these posts were left open... open pipes had dead birds可知,这些路桩和管道是开口的,再结合第三段中的Mass Wildlife suggests placing a metal cap with a screen on your chimney可推理判断题,在开口的管子上安装盖子可以防止鸟进入。

Ancient warriors in Tahiti and Samoa used to train by surfing可知,在古代,冲浪是萨摩亚武士训练的一种方式。
I think surfing is much more to me, the greatest thrill of my life可知,Kahanamoku认为冲浪比获得奥运奖牌更激动人心。
根据第一段中的for the first time, surfers are competing for medals at the Summer Olympics,第二段中盼the Tokyo Olympics以及最后一段中的At the moment, these surfers are hoping for some sick waves for the Olympic finals可知,本文应该是写于东京奥运会期间。

G项中的the problem指代上一句中的most people today wouldn’t like to live and work on a farm and the number of farmers decreases day by day;visit a farm与下一句中的visit a farm构成原词复现。
设空处下一句中的all of that指代D项中的screens以及上一句中的buildings,highways和cars。

42. A 43. I attended the largest book fair in the world及
I didn’t have... that many of my predecessors had,but this didn’t discourage me及I had the knowledge, I had the skills可知,尽管作者没有前辈们那么丰富的“经验(experience)”,但是她并不灰心,因为她有知识,有技能,也有“信心(confidence)”。

54. A 55. B 根据本段中的Instead of being competitive及We share books可知,作者和朋友们互相“支持(support)”,而不是互相竞争。
56. D 57. A 58. Each time we receive a rejection, we text the group和In doing so, we know... we’re in this together及we encourage each other可知,作者和朋友们一起“庆祝(celebrate)”失败。
The more rejections we receive, the more courageous... we are to reach our goals可知,拒绝让作者更有“勇气(courage)”。

One possible version:
Good morning, everyone!
The topic of my speech is healthy eating. As we know, eating healthily is extremely important for teenagers. It not only gives us the necessary energy but also helps us perform better in sports as well as schoolwork.
However, some bad eating habits are still common among students, who often skip breakfast, enjoy eating lots of snacks or junk food, and are particular about food. All these habits will do great harm to their bodies in the long run.
To eat healthily, I think we should make it a habit to eat meals regularly, and try to replace foods high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fat with fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat foods.
Thank you for listening.
