A year after Tokyo was awarded the 2020 Olympics, Roy went searching for an English-language book that recorded the 1964 Olympics--but he couldn't find one. So Roy decided to combine his love of the Olympics and his skills for writing and record the event that symbolized the determination ofthe Japanese to survive and thrive after World War II.

And yet, just 19 years later, Japan stood proud--modern, peace-loving, and open -welcoming the world as the host of the 1964 Olympic, the largest global event of its time.
In 1964--The Greatest Year in the History of Japan, Roy Tomizawa records how Japan rose from the destruction to create the greatest Asian economic miracle ofthe 20th century. It's likely that you don't think you have invited a spy into your home when setting up a new
TV. But new Sansung, LG and Vizio smart TVs can record and share everything that is viewed,
whether it's a broadcast or something streaming from the Intermet. And some smart TVs can even
track what DVD you' re watching.
Your viewing habits are valuable information for marketers who might want to use the information to introduce new shows or add extra content about some prodtucts to the shows you are already watching. The ads are primarily pop-ups (弹出式广告) like the ones you see on your computer.
You might not realize that you allowed that data collection when you agreed to the long
privacy policy during setup; with Samsung, it is 47 screens of text. LG and Vizio also ask you to
sign away (签字放弃) your privacy in thousands of words in fine print.
When Consumer Reports sent an email to the manufacturers to ask how they are using the
technology, representatives for Samsung and Vizio didn't make any comment. An LG
representative said that the company isn't using any data to send personalized ads and has no
plans to do so. But Consumer Reports said that could change at any time.
You might think, "Well, why don't I just turn those marketing features off?" It's not always
so easy. To stop manufacturers' tracking, you have to fght your way through menu settings. On
an LG set, go to"settings", then"options", then"Live plus", click "off", and then close. With
Vizio, it's a voyage through three menus to turm off the box“Smart Interactivity". With Samsung,
it's a similar trip to find the box"SyncPlus and Marketing" to disable it.
Consumer Reports said that disabling the marketing feature may cause you to lose offers of
extra scenes which are related to the shows you' re watching. But maybe that's a small price to
pay for knowing that what you re watching remains private.
24. What might the marketers use your viewing habits to do?
A. To improve the quality of smart TVs.
B. To collect some suggestions about shows.
C. To recommend shows or advertise products.
D. To build a strong relationship between produces and customers.
25. How does Consumer Reports find the comment made by an LG representative?
A. Negative B. Doubtful C. Reasonable D. Approving
26. What's the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. How we learn to use TVs' settings.
B. How we can become wise customers.
C. How we send personal information to others.
D. How we stop our viewing from being tracked.
27. Which ofthe following does the author probably agree with?
A. It's worthwhile to turn marketing features off.
B. People should keep their watching habits a secret.
C. TVs' marketing features should be further developed.
D. TV producers should apologize to customers for their misbehavior.

Summer floods are an annual occurrence for many cities across China. According to the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, in 2012. urban flooding affected 184 cities, while in 2013 the number was 234. and last year it was 125. it said. Now, new measures are being introduced to reduce loss of life and the economic damage caused by flooding.
One of the most effective measures to increase the efficiency of storm drains in cities would be to reduce the storm-water runoff and raise the 1evels of water filtration (过滤) and conservation in urban areas, experts said. To solve the problem of urban flooding once and for all, the central government has decided to push forward the "Sponge City" program. which in part borrows the experiences of low-impact development from the United States and Canada in recent years.
The program will allow at least 60 percent of rainwater to soak into the ground, rather than being discharged into rivers. The level of filtration could be further raised in some areas with 1ow 1evels of rainfall to increase the use of rainwater. The project includes the development of residential communities with storage ponds, filtration pools and wetlands. plus roads and squares buit with materials that will allow storm water to soak into the ground more effectively, according to the guideline.
"It would require a major shift in ideas about urban construction. Rainwater should be regarded as a resource, rather than a burden to be dealt with. Concepts of urban construction should shift from the destruction of the ecosystem to its renewal," Chen Zhenggao, Minister of Housing and Urban-rural Development, told a work conference in May. "If the urban runoff cannot be effectively filtred into the ground, the floods that follow will cause the direct loss of life and property." he said. He also believes low- impact development represents the future of the country's urbanization drive. "It (the dealing with storm water) is an issue of public security. Thus it should be a compulsory requirement when new urban areas are being planned and buit," he said.
28. The purpose to build a "Sponge City" is to______
A. reduce the storm-water runoff in urban areas
B. raise the levels of water filtration and conservation
C. address the problem of urban flooding permanently
D. achieve low-impact development with borrowed experiences
29.What can we 1earn from Paragraph 3?
A. At most 60% of rainwater is to soak into the ground.
B. The 1evel of filtration could be increased in areas with more rainfall.
C. Residential communities should be replaced by ponds. pools and wetlands
D. Roads should be built with materials allowing water to soak into the ground
30.What can we infer from Chen Zhenggao's remarks?
A. Floods take place because of the shift of the ecosystem
B. Floods will not happen when, urban runoff is filtered into rivers.
C. New urban construction concept means replacement of the ecosystem.
D. Low-impact urban development is a must to solve the issue of public security.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Summer floods have always been an issue for cities
B. "Sponge City" program is set to soak up urban floodwater.
C. Rainwater should be regarded as a resource rather than a burden.
D. Low-impact development can change the situation of urban ecosystem

Canadian Dr Frederick Banting, together with medical student Charles Best, building on the work of earlier physicians, isolated insulin from the pancreases (胰腺) of dogs and cows in 1921. A year later, the insulin was first tested on 14-year-old Leonard Thompson.__ 40__ No other drug in the history of medicine changed the lives of so many people so suddenly. When I was a child, I lived in a house with a beautiful garden full of dfferent flowers, and roses were the most beautiful of them. There was nothing I enjoyed more than stting in the garden with my mother, reading stories to me. When I was in primary school and old enough to read, I enjoyed reading stories aloud to her.
I will never forget one day when Ihad been picked to be the princess in the school play. For weeks my mother had practised my lines so hard with me. But however easily I acted at home, as soon as I stepped, every word disappeared from my head. Finally, tmy teacher took me aside. She explained that she had written a narrator's (叙述者) part to the play, and asked me to change my role. Her word, kindly expressed, still hurt, especially when I saw my part go to another girl.
I didn't tell my mother what had happened that day. But she sensed my pain. Instad of suggesting we practic my lines, she asked if I wanted to take a walk in the garden.
It was May and roses were blossoming and, under the trees, we could also see yellow dandelions(蒲公英) in the grass, as ifa painter had painted our garden with red, yellow and green. I watched my mother casually bend down by one dandelion.
"I think I'm going to dig up all these weeds," she said, pulling it up by its roots.“From now on,we'll have only roses in this garden."
“But I like dandelions," I protested.“All flowers are beautiful- even dandelions."
My mother looked at me seriously. “Yes, every flower is beautiful in its own way, isn't it?" she asked thoughtfully. I nodded, pleased that Ihad won her over.
“And that is true of people too," she added.“Not everyone can be a princess, but there is no shame in that."
Realizing that she had guessed my pain, I started crying as I told her what had happened. She
listened and smiled reassuringly.
