I had just delivered a memorized speech that I had labored over for months, and I was about to learn how the experts judged my performance. The polite audience leaned forward in their folding chairs. Silence fell across the room and the drum rolled in my mind.
The contest organizer announced the third-place winner. Alas, the name was not mine. Then the second, and once again it was not me. At last, the moment of truth came. Either I was about to be bathed in the warmth of victory or regretted the last several months spent preparing. While neither of these came to pass, my heart just sank.
Losing is a part of life, but it was an indescribable depression to drive 200 miles round trip, get up early on a freezing Saturday morning, and yet still finish fourth out of four contestants. After Lincoln lost the 1858 Illinois Senate race, he reportedly said, “I felt like the 12-year-old boy who stubbed his toe. I was too big to cry and it hurt too bad to laugh.” Oh yeah, I could relate.
Months before the contest, I had spent hours in front of a computer and in libraries doing research for the Lincoln Bicentennial Speech Contest. As I read through several biographies, one idea stood out: Lincoln was handed many sound defeats, but he never allowed them to permanently stop his spirit or ambition. I thought “failing successfully” was a very appropriate topic, given the many letdowns Lincoln experienced, and so this became the title of my speech.
Never mind the lost prize money and praise — I did gain a new perspective. Through learning about Lincoln, I discovered that I could fail successfully. Now, whenever I’m faced with a failure, I remember what Lincoln said after his unsuccessful 1854 Senate race, “The path was worn and slippery. My foot slipped from under me, knocking the other out of the way, but I recovered and said to myself, ‘It’s a slip and not a fall.’”
    24. How did the author feel when waiting for the announcement of the result?
    A. Relieved. B. Thrilled. C. Nervous. D. Desperate.
    25. Why did the author mention Lincoln’s failures in Senate race?
    A. To show Lincoln’s determination to win Senate race.
    B. To present his research findings of Lincoln’s biographies.
    C. To compare what they had in common in their experiences.
    D. To indicate that he drew inspiration from Lincoln’s failures.
    26. What’s the author’s attitude towards the lost prize money and praise?
    A. Favorable. B. Optimistic. C. Concerned. D. Amazed.
    27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. A Successful Failure B. A Slippery Path
    C. An Unexpected Speech D. An Impressive Example
    C
Amazing and perfectly beautiful, The Midnight Library is everything you’d expect from the genius storyteller, Matt Haig. I picked it up from our readers’ recommendations (we asked our readers to send in some of their favorite recent books) and I can see why it won Best Fiction of 2020 in the Good Reads Choice Awards.
The story follows Nora Seed, a woman who is struggling and feels like nothing in her life has gone according to plan. While the initial chapters of the book are quite sad, Nora finds herself given a chance to start over in the Midnight Library, a magical place full of books of all the different paths her life could have taken. Nora is forced to stay in the library and try out different versions of her life until she finds the life she most wants to live.
I loved the idea that no dream or fork in your road is insignificant and that they all lead us to become different versions of ourselves. In one life, Nora is an Olympic swimmer. In another, she is a glaciologist living on a boat off the coast of Antarctica. The novel reveals in a beautiful way that the potential we all have within us is impossible to measure, and that we have the possibility to be happy in many different versions of life.
It also discusses how dangerous it can be to live your life with regrets. The Midnight Library revealed to Nora that even if you make very different choices, you may uncover a deeper appreciation for your current home and the people in your life. It is your perspective that matters.
I really loved the fantasy and magical realism in this novel, and I would love for this to be turned into a series where we get to explore The Midnight Library of other characters’ lives as well.
    28. What can we know about the author of the text?
    A. He should be an editor.
    B. He is the friend of Matt Haig.
    C. Magical realism books are his favorite.
    D. He shares a similar experience with Nora.
    29. What does The Midnight Library mainly discuss?
    A. A magic library. B. The harm of regret.
    C. The exploration of life. D. Ways to make correct choices.
    30. Where can the text be found?
    A. In a novel. B. In a magazine.
    C. In a history book. D. In a biography.
    31. What is the purpose of the text?
    A. To thank readers who introduced the book.
    B. To share the author’s opinions on the book.
    C. To honour Matt Haig, the author of the book.
    D. To publicize the book to people who are struggling.
    D
Notpla is a London-based firm that makes a seaweed-based substitute for single-use plastic packaging. Although some of Notpla’s products are suitable to be eaten, they are designed to be dissolved (溶解) after usage. The company’s film wrap is made of seaweed lining instead of a conventional plastic-based coating. This makes the film fully biodegradable and ideal for use as packaging for cupboard and bathroom supplies like coffee and toilet paper.
According to the United Nations, 331 million kilograms of plastic garbage is produced annually around the world. Roughly 60% of the estimated 9.15 billion tons of plastic produced since the early 1950s has been taken to landfills or abandoned outdoors.
Plastics harm the water, the air, and our bodies. Many experts agree that single-use plastics are unnecessary and dangerous. Some governments and towns in the United States have taken action. New York has banned most plastic shopping bags, while plastic straws have been banned in Miami Beach. Overseas India stated in August that it plans to put a wide ban on single-use plastics this upcoming summer, with the European Union already implementing this ban.
Seaweed comes in a variety of species and can be harvested or farmed. Notpla uses plants that have been farmed. Rodrigo Garciá González and Pierre Paslie, the inventors of Notpla, initially considered seaweed as a solution to the world’s plastic problem for several reasons. Seaweed is abundant and grows quickly. Additionally, it doesn’t compete with land crops and is highly favored for its ability to remove some waste products like carbon from the atmosphere.
In cooperation with the online food ordering service Just Eat, the startup recently tested its product. Last year, the two companies handed out 30,000 takeaway boxes at various UK restaurants. Plans are in the works to offer the boxes across Europe in 2022. Notpla’s team intends to replace single-use plastic in the supply chain more generally as they scale. The company recognizes the difficulty of such a job given the volume of plastics consumed around the world.
    32. How does the author mainly develop paragraph 2?
    A. By comparing facts. B. By presenting figures.
    C. By raising questions. D. By giving examples.
    33. What can best replace the underlined word “implementing” in paragraph 3?
    A. Lifting. B. protecting. C. opposing. D. performing.
    34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
    A. The wide use of seaweed.
    B. The next goal of the new study.
    C. The huge market of the plastic bags.
    D. The advantages of choosing seaweed.
    35. What does the company think of its plan to replace the whole single-use plastic?
    A. It will be unpractical. B. It will be richly rewarded.
    C. It will be a little tough. D. It will be rather successful.

When my little brother Tom was four, Mom said something like “I’d give anything to have a few more hours in the day.” And Tom said, “Why don’t we buy a bigger clock?” If time worked that way, I could have used an extra-big clock last week!
Our teacher had asked us to make an art project showing how plants eat, “I can’t believe we only have two nights to finish it,” Noah said with a sigh. “I have no idea how I’ll get mine done.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I was nervous — I wasn’t nervous at all. 1 love art projects! In fact, I was so relaxed that I didn’t work on the project at all on Monday night. I planned to start the minute I got home from baseball practice on Tuesday. But there was just one thing.
I forgot baseball would run later than usual because it was the day of Baseball Buddies, which happens every month, and it’s a chance for us older students to practise baseball with the adorable younger kids. The second I got home, I threw the entire craft box (手工盒) onto the kitchen table, took out my “How Plants Eat” paper, and started to work. But just then, the telephone rang.
It was my friend Ollie, who said his grandmother Abuela had just made cookies and wanted to know if I’d come help decorate them. I love decorating cookies, and I love, love, love Abucla’s world-famous Thanksgiving cookies that only happen once a year!
I had no choice. I had to go. Ollie and I put all the star cookies with red jam filling in one group, and all the snowflakes with white cream-cheese filling in another. It was 7 o’clock when I finally got home.1 planned to work on my project right after we ate. But then another interruption hit me.
    注意:

Sorry to hear that you are bothered by some bad life habits, which will surely make you worn out and do harm to your physical and mental well-being. The following are some tips on how to break these habits.
First of all, adjust your lifestyle to have a balanced diet and enough sleep, which is of critical significance for you to stay dynamic. Also of equal importance is to work out regularly. Only in this way can you not only keep yourself in shape but also get refreshed. Besides, to change yourself for the better, self-discipline really matters/counts.
For your health and future, take action straight away!

    读后续写
Just as I was about to start, Dad said, “Joanna, it’s your turn to do the dishes.” What Dad said was a hammer blow to me, leaving me into deeper anxiety. However, that was one of our family rules, so I had to do the dishes reluctantly. The clinking of dishes were disquieting sounds from hell to me, reminding me that the clock was ticking second by second. After I threw the last dish into the cabinet, I rushed into my bedroom, only to find that the hour hand had moved past ten. Without much time left, I finished the assignment in a hurry. The next day, I handed in it nervously.(85)
Looking at the big “F” on my paper, I started to reflect on what I had done these days. My life seemed in a mess these days, arising from my loose attitude and chaotic schedule. My energy was segmented and occupied by some trivial matters which had nothing to do with my project. Out of guilt, I explained to my teacher and promised this would never happen again. After this experience, I eventually comprehended the importance of time, and began to arrange for my schedule with caution. With confidence, I was firmly convinced that I could get a satisfying score in the next assignment.(85)

M: OK. But where will you stay on Friday night?
    W: I’ll find a hotel.

M: Oh, I thought you were a programmer or an expert in this field.
W: Not exactly, but I know a bit about computers.

M: What did you find difficult at first?
W: The students’ questions. They always asked so many strange questions. Once a child asked me why I didn’t live next door to her, because she wanted to go home with metogether. (14)
M: That’s really interesting.(14)How did you answer her?
W: I said if every child in the class wanted me to live next door to them, I would have to buy 25 houses. But I didn’t have so much money, so I just lived in the school.
M: That might be the best answer we can give. I heard you are getting married next month. And you don’t live in the school now. (15)
W: Right. We’ve bought a house near the park and I moved there only last Sunday. (15) It is a bit expensive, but it’s in a good neighborhood and also near our school. So it’s well worth the money.
M: Sounds great. I will visit you next time.
