Just More Water
Just More Water is a newly-founded comedy group on campus. It specializes in short form and musical comedy. However, members experiment with other styles as well. Kalliope & Muse
Kallope & Muse is a magazine that publishes prose, poems, short stories and artworks. Its purpose is to provide a platform for students to express themselves and get their work published. Every issue has a specific theme. Members also organize reading events. Whoever at Yale wants to see your work published, please join us.

Campus Broadway
Campus Broadway is the undergraduate opera club at Yale. It is entirely student-run. Members have the opportunity to learn the knowledge of performing and producing an opera by doing it themselves. Goldfish have pretty boring lives, so maybe it’s a good thing that they can only concentrate for nine seconds! But according to a new research, humans are becoming like goldfish. Our attention span (时长) is getting shorter and it’s all due to technology.
“We move quickly from one site to another on the web,” says Dr. Ted Selker, a computer scientist from Massachusetts, “and we are losing the ability to concentrate.” With millions of websites to choose from, the attention span of the average Internet user is just seconds. There are other digital distractions(分心) too: email, instant messaging and quickie movies on websites.
Some people are worried about the effect on young people. “You need time to understand and think about what you read,” says Julia Wood, from London. “Young people search the net all the time and their brains become full of useless information but there is no time to make sense of it. I am trying to persuade my pupils to read more books, so that they can concentrate on one subject for longer.”
Other teachers are trying more unusual methods to improve students’ concentration. Anne Savan, from Wales, was so concerned about her students that she started playing Mozart during her science lessons. She says that it had an amazing effect, “The music made them calmer, and their concentration was much better.”
But not everyone is convinced that there is a problem. Ray Cole, an educational psychologist says, “On the web, young people learn to make quick decisions about what is and isn’t worth reading. They might look at five unhelpful websites very quickly, before stopping and reading a sixth useful website more carefully. In a world with so much information available, this is an important skill.”
24. Why does the writer mention “goldfish”?
A. To analyze data.
B. To introduce a topic.
C. To settle problems.
D. To suggest a way out.
25. What may cause a shorter attention span according to Dr. Ted Selker?
A. Skipping around the Internet.
B. Time to digest information.
C. Traditional methods of reading.
D. Making decisions.
26. What will help students overcome a short attention span?
A. Receiving emails.
B. Texting messages.
C. Reading more books.
D. Watching quickie movies.
27. What is Ray Cole’s attitude towards looking through websites quickly?
A. Cautious. B. Unfavorable.
C. Skeptical. D. Supportive.

The Internet plays a big part in human life. We use it for work and pleasure. We use it to learn a new language. We seek advice on it. We use it to connect with family and friends. We use it to stay in touch with events we care about. The list goes on and on.
As far as the Internet being a part of our lives—well, that train has left the station. There is no going back to an Internet-free life. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health? It might be, say researchers. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure in a young group: teenagers.
The study results show that teens who spend at least 14 hours a week only online may cause high blood pressure, which makes your heart and blood vessels work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and other diseases.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study.335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it.134 of the teens were described as “heavy Internet users”. And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy web use with high blood pressure.
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy Bushrow. She said, “Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn’t ruin us.” Ms. Cassidy Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to stop to have a rest on a regular basis from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents shouldn’t let their children use the Internet for more than two hours a day, five days a week.
28.What does the underlined part “that train has left the station” mean in Paragraph 2?

B. Life without the Internet is nowhere to be found.
C. The train has changed its course.
D. There is something wrong with the station.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The advantages of Internet use.
B. The harm of high blood pressure.
C. The disadvantages of Internet use.
D. Ways to prevent high blood pressure.
30.Andrea Cassidy Bushrow would agree that .
A. teenagers shouldn’t use the Internet
B. the Internet will ruin human life in the future
C. regular breaks are necessary when using the Internet
D. smartphones are more harmful than computers
31. What can be used as the best title of the passage?
A. Heavy Internet users are mostly teenagers.
B. How to prevent teenagers from the Internet.
C. Every coin has two sides—so does the Internet.
D. Too much Internet use may be bad for teenagers.
D
Twenty-five years ago, most young Britons wanted a career in law, to be a doctor, or, if they were creative enough, to take up singing. But today, things stand differently.
According to a survey by Tesco Mobile, a UK company, the “dream job” of young people aged between 16 and 25 in the UK is a video blogger, or “vlogger (视频博主)”.The survey, carried out among 1,002 people, found that as much as 40 percent of them put vlogger as their number one choice on a list of ideal careers.
This change is undoubtedly as a result of the Internet and social media. They have made it so much easier to reach audience of the world, without having to enter a career in show business in the traditional way.
In the past, the biggest stars were trained by the Hollywood studios; now, anyone with a computer camera can become a star. Vloggers are the big stars of today because they are normal people interacting(互动) with their fans about everyday life.
However, what people see is only the bright side of being a vlogger and they fail to notice the fact that only those who are successful earn fame and fortune. For every success there are hundreds of others who never get off the starting line. There are the dreams that come true and the dreams that remain dreams forever.
Although being vloggers is popular, some young people choose to follow careers that don’t necessarily earn them fame, but allow them to make good use of the Internet to share their hobbies. Young Israeli David Leshaw, for example, runs a business called the Finishers Club. It’s an online platform for runners to keep a record of their races. His job allows him to express his enthusiasm(热情), and is always a learning experience. And that’s enough for him.
32. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Most young Britons choose to be vloggers as their job.
B. The Internet is influencing young Britons’career choice.
C. The Internet is taking the place of traditional studios.
D. Young Britons cannot find jobs without the Internet.
33. Why do more and more young Britons choose to be vloggers?
A. Vloggers can earn little fame and money on the Internet.
B. There is too much competition in the traditional show business.
C. The Internet makes it convenient to become vloggers.
D. Anyone with a computer will surely become a star.
34. What can we infer from the fifth paragraph?
A. Only a few vloggers can be successful.
B. A vlogger cannot earn fame and fortune.
C. People often see the both sides of being a vlogger.
D. Dreams will always remain to be dreams.
35.What do young people like David do on the Internet?
A. Learn from others. B. Become an online hit.
C. Hold running races. D. Mix jobs with hobbies.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Are you afraid of failure? However, only by overcoming fear of failure can we achieve success in life. Here are some tips on how to remove fear and focus on success:
Understand that at times you make mistakes. 36 Before any of us learned how to walk, we crawled(爬行). We got up, fell down and got up again. We continued the process until we could walk quite well.
37 Instead, view it as a stepping stone. Make sure that you learn from failure and then use what you have learned in future situations. Refuse to consider failure a character weakness. Doing so will only prevent you from achieving future success.
Remember that failure has produced many successes. 38 Albert Einstein’s teacher told him to quit school and said, “Einstein, you will never achieve anything!” Beethoven’s music teacher said he was hopeless to become a composer. Henry Ford’s first two car companies failed.
Appreciate the benefits of failure. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “All life is an experiment. The more experiments you try, the better you make.” It’s hardly possible for someone to achieve success for the first time he tries. 39
Believe in yourself. Rather than give up when things don’t work out, take it as a chance to build perseverance (坚持不懈). Remind yourself how many failures became successful because they wouldn’t give up. 40
A. Don’t take failure personally.
B. Work hard and try to avoid failure.
C. Realize that you are human and humans make mistakes.
D. Believe that you’ve got what it takes to work through the tough times.
E. Making the same mistake again can lead to the failure in your future work.
F. Consider how many people in history had failed before they became successful.
G. In other words, your chances of getting things right on the first try are little.
