Teaching procedures: Step 1: Warming up with a guessing game T: I will give you the description of the animal and you guess it as quickly as possible. Clear?
Step 2: An interview Task1: Be an interviewer. Ask around and find out the favourite animals of your classmates and ask them why they like those animals best. S1: May I ask you a question? S2: Sure. S1: What animal do you like best? S2: I like pandas best. S1: Why do you like pandas best? S2: Because they are cute and there are only a few of them in the world. I think we should protect them. S1: I see. Thanks a lot. S2: You’re welcome. Step 3: Fast reading Task 2: Read the passage quickly and find out the animals and places first. Then put the following things into the correct order. In front of the South Gate. Find the Lions’ Area. Go to the Panda House. Get to the Monkeys’ Forest. See the giraffes. See the World of Birds. See the elephants. Read these sentences in the correct order. Step 4: Careful reading T: Let’s visit the zoo. Now, we are in front of the South Gate. Which place should we visit first? S: The Panda House. T: How can we get there? S: We just need to go straight on from the gate. T: Now, read the first paragraph together and answer the following question. Q1:What do pandas like to do? S: They like to eat bamboo and lie down all day long. Task 3: Listen and complete Listen to the audio of Paragraph Two and fill in the blanks. Lions are____________________________ Remember that they are _________ Never go near them. Task 4: Read and tell T or F. Ask one student to read the first two passages for us and the others finish the exercises on the PPT. F
Task 5: Watch and answer Watch the video of Paragraph Three and then answer the following questions.
Task 6: Read and answer. Read the fourth paragraph and answer. Q1: Why do giraffes have long necks? Because their long necks help them eat the leaves from the trees. Q2: What are the elephants’ large ears like? They are like open fans. Read the paragraph again and fill in the blanks.
Step 5: Further reading Task 7: Read the passage by yourself and make a map of the zoo.
Task 8: Make a profile of these animals Task 9: Be a guide Work in pairs. One student is the guide and the other is a visitor. Introduce the zoo to the visitor and later exchange the role. Step 6: Further thinking Discuss with your team members about what visitors can and cannot do in the zoo. Share your idea with us. Step 7: Homework 1. Recite the passage and introduce the zoo to your friends. 2. Write an article about what visitors should pay attention to when visiting a zoo. | ||||||||||||
Reflection: Students in Grade Seven are interested in playing games so I designed several games like ‘be an interviewer’ and ‘be a guide’. They have fun in these tasks. Also, from fast reading to careful reading, students can have a gradual understanding of the text. Later, they draw the map of the zoo and make a profile of the animals so they can introduce the zoo to others and be a guide. At last, they develop the idea of being a good visitor. |
