Teaching procedures

Step 1. Revision

Play “ABC” song for students.

T: It’s an “ABC”song. I think you’re familiar with it. Now I want to know how well you can remember these 26 letters.

Step 2. Presentation

1. Listen to the “ABC” song again and sing together.
2. Tell them that English words are all made up of letters. Tell students to write some words beginning with “a” and “b”.
3. Find the words in the dictionary and write down the page numbers.
4. Discuss：

Which words comes first?

Which one comes next? Why?

5. The words in a dictionary are in alphabetical order from A to Z . this helps us find the words quickly.

T: Look at the words on the blackboard. Because “a” comes before “b” in alphabetical order, all the words beginning with “a” come before the words beginning with “b” in dictionary.

6. Discussion: If two words start with the same letter, what should we do ?

If the first two letters are the same, what should we do?

If the first three letters are the same, what should we do?

Step 3. Practice

1. Put the words in Part A1 in alphabetical order and write down the numbers 1-8 in the blanks.
2. Have a competition . ( Who can find the words in the dictionary fastest?)
3. T: do you see the word in the top corner of each page? That’s the guide word. Guide words tell is the first and the last words on a page in a dictionary. They tell us whether the word we want is on the page or before or after it. Guide words can help you find the correct page quickly.
4. Now let’s learn how to use the guide words. Look at Part B. on the left are some page numbers and guide words from a dictionary. Write down the page numbers for the words on the right.

However, dictionary is the most important tool for language leaning, so it’s important for the middle school students to learn how to use it. They should use dictionary more often after class.
