It had been 10 years since a family in the Ozarks lost their beloved dog named Razzle. Understandably, after so much time, they’d come to accept the fact that they would never get to see their furry little friend again.

But then they received a phone call that was nothing short of a miracle — Razzle had been found!

In the decade since he went missing, Razzle has been on a long journey. He somehow managed to make his way from Herb Springs, Arkansas, to French Camp, California. That adds up to 1,600 miles!

While traveling around the city, Razzle managed to come across just the right people. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office, after they discovered the sweet dog, they had him checked for a microchip. Thankfully, he did have one, and they were able to locate his family! That’s when volunteer pilot Jeremy Wade took over.

“The amazing dog transport folks out in California knew I sometimes fly to Heber Springs, and now he’s getting a ride with me back to his family after all these years,” Jeremy said.

Razzle’s long journey away from home was finally coming to a close! He was loaded safely onto the plane, and then the two of them headed to Arkansas, where the pup’s family was waiting for them.

“He’s now a very old dog, but now he can have the sunset of his life back home with his family in the Ozarks,” Jeremy said.

We can only imagine how amazed Razzle’s family was to hear the news, but the joy on their faces when they were finally reunited said it all.

Wow, what an emotional ending! There truly is nothing like the love between a family and their dog.

    4. What happened after Razzle’s missing?

    A. He liked the journey.  B. His owners felt amazed.

    C. He created a miracle.  D. His owners accepted the fact.

    5. What’s the key factor for the dog’s return home?

    A. The folks’ transporting him. B. His loyalty to his owners.

    C. The microchip tied to him. D. The pilot’s taking over him.

    6. Which word can describe Sheriff’s office?

    A. Cautious. B. Determined. C. Generous. D. Grateful.

    7. What’s the best title of this text?

It’s called the Bank of Happiness, but it has nothing to do with money. Founded a year ago in Estonia’s capital Tallinn, it’s a forum in which more than 2,000 members from Estonia and other countries connect to offer or receive services free of charge.

The site carries more than 500 ads in English, German and Estonian from people offering or seeking all kinds of things, including teaching and tips on cooking. The website is also translated into French and Spanish.

Founder Airi Kivi says the goal is to make people think and act with their hearts. “After the worldwide outbreak of the pandemic, I thought, ‘Wow, our bank is perfect for the crisis and a lot of people are unemployed and they can use it to harvest what they need.’”

So how does it work? It’s simple: You sign up using your real name and post what you are offering or what your need is, as long as it doesn’t involve money or products.

Masseuse Terge Reintem says she signed up when she was unemployed because she needed to improve her skills by learning from others. But she stayed on even after finding a new job because she says it feels good to volunteer. “If I discover a new technique, I want my bank customers to first experience it,” Reintem says, adding they are often nicer than the paying ones.

Member Veronika Davel says she infringed the rules with her first request when she asked for a product: a computer. But she did it unknowingly. Later, she began offering services of her own on the bank’s website. “The main thing I really could offer was English,” Davel explains. “There was a young girl who needed to have better English for her job and I gave her a hand.”

The site has many more offers of help than requests for it. That’s as it should be, Kivi says, adding that the bigger reward comes from giving.

    8. How can the Bank of Happiness benefit its members?

    A. They can help each other at no cost.  B. They can place ads for their products.

    C. They can travel to many countries for free.  D. They can read much news about happiness.

    9. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 6?

    A. Obeyed.  B. Broke. C. Made.         D. Bent.

    10. Why does Reintem keep serving the bank?

    A. To improve her skills.  B. To win more customers.

    C. To enjoy the helpfulness.  D. To learn new techniques.

    11. How does the writer introduce the bank?

    A. By using specific data.  B. By giving examples.

    C. By referring to common knowledge. D. By using comparison and contrast.

    D

Researchers say a new electrical device placed in three paralyzed patients has helped them walk again. The lower bodies of the three patients were left paralyzed after they suffered spinal (脊柱的) cord injuries. But a device implanted in the spinal cord was able to send electrical signals to the muscles to permit them to stand, walk and exercise.

Scientists have discovered that neurons—which receive and send signals for muscle movements—often still work in injured patients with serious spinal cord injuries. However, past research into spinal cord injuries has centered on the stimulation of neurons. Now in the latest experiment led by Gregoire Courtine and Jocelyne Bloch of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, three paralyzed men were implanted a new electrical device designed to copy an action of the brain, in which it sends signals to the spinal cord that result in muscle movement. When the spinal cord receives the brain signals, it stimulates a collection of nerve cells that can activate different muscles.

The researchers reported that all three patients who got the spinal cord implants were able to take their first steps within an hour after receiving them. Over the next six months, the patients regained the ability to take part in more advanced walking activities, the study found. They were also able to ride bicycles and swim in community settings.

Unlike other attempts to help paralyzed patients walk by stimulating nerves through the back of the spine, Courtine said that his team redesigned the devices so signals would enter the spine from the sides. This method permits more direct targeting and activation of spinal cord areas, he said.

The team then developed artificial intelligence (AI) systems linked to the device. The AI controls electrodes on the device to send signals to stimulate individual nerves that control muscles needed for walking and other activities. However, because the patients’ muscles were weak from not being used, they needed help with supporting their weight, the researchers said. It also took some time for them to learn to work with the technology. Still, Bloch said, “The more they train, the more they start lifting their muscles, the more fluid it becomes.”

    12. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?

    A. Courtine and Bloch have found that neurons in paralyzed patients still work.

    B. The new electrical device can imitate the brain to send signals to the spinal cord.

    C. Three paralyzed men recovered with the help of a new electrical device.

    D. Stimulating the neurons is the focus of the latest research into spinal .cord injuries.

    13. How does the new device stimulate the spinal cord areas more directly?

    A. By stimulating nerves through the back of the spine.

    B. By using the AI system.

    C. By making signals enter the spine from the sides.

    D. By sending the signals to the brain.

    14. Which can best describe Bloch’s idea in the last paragraph?

    A. Every garden has its weeds. B. Put the cart (运货马车) before the horse.

    C. It's hard to please all.  D. Practice makes perfect.

    15. What is the purpose of this text?

    A. To report the consequence of spinal cord injuries.

    B. To introduce the findings of a recent research.

    C. To compare a recent research with other previous researches.

    D. To recommend a treatment for paralyzed patients.

    第二节 (满分25)

        阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

For my fifth-grade science fair project, I got six chicken eggs in an incubator(孵化器).

“But I don’t know anything about hatching an egg.”

Mrs. Brubeck smiled. “You don’t have to be an immediate expert at everything, Juli. The idea here is to learn something new.”

    “But what if they die?”

“Then they die. Document your work scientifically and you’ll still get an A” She pulled The Beginner’s Guide to Raising Chickens from her bookshelf and said, “Read the book and set yourself up tonight.”

That night I came home, more worried than ever. I’d read the book. I had to turn the eggs three times a day and regulate the temperature and humidity(湿度). But aside from that, what was there to do?

My father came with a cardboard tube and a flashlight. He taped the two together so that the light beam was forced straight out the tube. “I will show you how to candle the eggs,” he said, then switched off the light and held an egg up to the cardboard tube. “The light lets you see through the shell so you can watch the embryo(胚胎) develop. Look, see the dark spot here?”

    “Is that an embryo?”

    “That’s it!”

Suddenly it felt real. The eggs were alive! Surely they had to live!

For the next three weeks, I was completely consumed with the growing of chicks. I labeled the eggs A, B, C, D, E and F, but before long they had names, too: Abby, Bonnie, Clyde, Dexter, Eunice and Florence. Every day I weighed them, candled them, turned them. I drew diagrams of various stages of an embryo’s development. I documented the daily changes and weight loss of each egg. On the outside the eggs were boring, but I knew what was happening inside!

    注意:1.写作词数应为150左右;

    2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Then one morning I was candling Bonnie when I noticed a gentle peck().

The day came when I was supposed to hand in my science fair project.
