On February 21, 2011, a pwerful earthquake (f magnitude 6.3) hit Christchurch, the secnd-largest city in New Zealand. It severely damaged the city and killed 185 peple. This was nt the first earthquake in New Zealand, but it was the secnd deadliest natural disaster in New Zealand, in terms f lives lst and prperty damaged.
On September 11, 2001, al-Qaeda launched a terrrist attack n the US. They hijacked (劫持) fur passenger planes and planned t hit three targets. Tw planes flew t crash int the Wrld Trade Center, ne t the Pentagn, and the last t Washingtn D.C. The last plane was the nly ne that missed its target because the passengers n the plane managed t vercme the hijackers. The mst destructive attack was the ne n the Wrld Trade Center, which claimed 2,606 lives.

In May 2001, I fund a jb in New Yrk at the Wrld Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, I arrived at my building at arund 8:30 a.m. I was abut t g up when I decided t get a cffee first. I went t my favrite cffee place even thugh it was tw blcks east frm my ffice. As I was waiting in line with ther ffice wrkers, I heard a lud sund. Befre I culd jin the thers utside t see what was ging n, the first plane hadalready hit my ffice building. We stared in disbelief at the black smke rising abve the burning building. I felt lucky t be alive.
Almst 10 years later, I wke up at 10:00 a.m. n February 21, 2011 and realized that my alarm had never went ff. I jumped ut f bed and went straight t the airprt. But by the time I gt t the airprt, my plane t New Zealand had already taken ff. “This is the first hliday I’ve taken in a year, and nw I’ve missed my plane. What bad luck!” I thught t myself. The ther planes were full s I had t wait till the next day. The next mrning, I heard abut the earthquake in New Zealand the day befre. My bad luck had unexpectedly turned int a gd thing.
