We can learn a lot about people and their culture from the clothes they wear. During World War II, for example, women in the UK and America wore simple clothes. That was because many men were away at war and women had to do men’s jobs. Women wore short, straight skirts because the government needed all the extra material for the war.
After World War II, fashions in these countries changed greatly. The French designer Christian Dior started designing dresses that were long and full. The designer used a lot of cloth to make them. Women all over the world loved these dresses! After years of wearing short, straight skirts, wearing these dresses made them feel very good.
Later, though, women grew tired of wearing long, full dresses. Skirts started getting shorter and tighter once again. By the 1960s, teenagers, especially in the UK and America, began wearing mini-skirts. Mini-skirts showed women’s legs above the knees for the first time in history. Soon women of all ages were wearing them.
By the early 1970s, fashion changed again and skirts became longer. Trousers also became fashionable in the 1970s and for the first time, women started wearing trousers suits when they went out. Many people didn’t like to see women in trousers. They said they looked like men! Another problem was the men wore their hair long during this period and it was difficult to tell the difference between men and women.
Today, many different kinds of clothes are in fashion for both men and women. In fact, many clothes are suitable for both men and women.

How can you remember a song from your childhood to this day? Why do your teachers use songs to teach you English? It seems there is a scientific reason for this.
Researchers are now studying the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They find that remembering words in a song is the best way to remember even the most difficult language.
“Singing could be a new way of learning a foreign language. The brain likes to remember things when they are used in a catchy and meaningful way,” said Dr. Karen Ludke. The findings may help those who have difficulties learning foreign languages. In his blog, Dr. Ludke writes, “A listen-and-repeat singing method can support foreign language learning, and opens the door for future research in this area.”
Many language teachers know the value of using music and singing. Hua Zhuying, a teacher at a Chinese language school in Washington, D. C., depends heavily on songs in teaching Chinese. She says, “I use music all the time to teach children Chinese. For little kids usually we use English songs but teach them the Chinese lyrics. So it’s easy for them to start because they know the music. Not only does it work, but it is fun for the kids.”
“Sometimes, I think if I were taught English in that way, maybe I would speak much better English than now,” Hua Zhuying adds.
Our brain likes music, especially for remembering. So, if you’re still struggling in learning a language, why not try singing it out?

How do students spend their spare time after finishing their homework? Watch TV, surf the Internet, play computer games or go outside to relax? Here’s a good example.
Tim and Kerry Meek are both teachers. They live in the UK with their two daughters eleven-year-old Amy and nine- year-old Ella. Recently, the Meek family has become the focus of the whole country after they completed 100 different outdoor activities in one year.
The Meek couple didn’t want their children to spend all their free time in front of the screen and become “couch potatoes”. So about one year ago, the Meeks decided that watching TV and playing computer games were not permitted. Instead, they set 100 tasks for the two girls to do outside. Although Mr. and Mrs. Meek are not outdoor activity fans, they took part in all the activities to encourage their daughters. It turned out that the two sisters really had a good time joining activities.
Every holiday and weekend, whether it’s sunny, rainy, or snowy, the Meeks would set off to try the activities on their list, including hiking, sailing, climbing, skiing, and so on. The two little girls not only had a wonderful time, but also learned a lot of skills from the activities. They even able to stand up in front of their school to give a talk for charity. “Our friends spend a lot of their free time doing things which are harmful to their health. Luckily, we’ve had the chance to experience something different.” Amy and Ella also helped their parents to draw up a new list of challenges for the next 12 months.

Dear Dr. Vesslor,
I'm a 12-year-old middle school student who usually gets about eight hours of sleep a night. I often feel tired when I get home from school at 5:30, and I want to be energetic to do my homework in the evening. However, when I try taking a nap, I sleep for two or three hours, then I wake up with no energy. What can I do so that I can have more energy in the evening?
Yours,
Too Sleepy
Dear Too Sleepy,
Good for you for thinking of ways to do your schoolwork. The first thing I would like to point out is that you are not getting enough sleep at night. I think that you should go to bed earlier.
When you don’t get enough sleep at night, napping can help you to recharge. Introducing a catnap into your day may be very helpful. In fact, studies show that taking a short nap after learning new information may help you remember the information better!
I do not, however, recommend (推荐) a two-or three-hour nap because napping for several hours during the day can make it hard for you to fall asleep at night. it, be, can, also, wake up, after, difficult, to, a long nap. According to research by David F. Dinges, napping for as little as 24 minutes improves mental (精神的) performance.
Another important thing to consider is when to take your nap. I think that if you decide to take a nap, you should do so right after you get home from school. Set a timer for about 24 minutes so that you won’t oversleep. You will most likely wake up and have more energy for the evening.
Sleep well!
