When an editor called to ask if I could photograph a story about fireflies in Mexico, I didn’t check my schedule before I said yes. I’d seen these insects light up the forests in Tlaxcala once before, and I jumped at the chance to go back.
While studying, I began exploring Mexico, crossing the country several times by bus. Now I work as a photojournalist in Mexico and along the border, documenting disappointing situations that face everyday Mexicans. Though necessary and important, news stories don’t reflect the Mexico that I fell for(喜爱)and that is home to so many people I love. A task focused on the country’s natural beauty was a welcome reprieve for me.
I had three nights to film the magical scene in the forest. According to our guides, visitors are usually not allowed to photograph the fireflies because the presence of artificial light from electronics can affect their habits. As I started shooting, I adjusted my exposures constantly to account for the fading light. In order to get the composition that I wanted, I placed my tripod(三脚架) on a steep, rocky path and had to steady it during the long exposures. Normally this wouldn’t be a big deal, but the fireflies were very interested in the camera and, by extension, in me. I stood completely still while they were all over me-my arms, my hair, my face. From what I observed, peak(高峰时期的) firefly presence lasts for only about 20 minutes each night, so I had time for just a few tries.
On the last night everything came together. The weather cooperated. I had improved my method for focusing and composing photos in the dark with quick flashes from a powerful flashlight-and I’d grown accustomed to insects on my face.
I was rewarded with the image you see here. Each dot of light is one of several bursts that a firefly makes as it travels within a 30-second exposure. You can track the insects’ path: Some make small circles, like those in the bottom center of the frame, while others move steadily in one direction or another.
24. How did the author feel about the editor’s request?
A. Delighted. B. Nervous. C. Confused. D. Regretful.
25. Which of the following words can best replace the underlined word “reprieve” in paragraph 2?
A. Return. B. Relief. C. Trend. D. Victory.
26. What did the author intend to do during the first two nights?
A. Learn about the local travel rules.
B. Research the habit of the fireflies.
C. Find the suitable spot and time to take photos.
D. Communicate constantly with the guides.
27. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To share the story behind a photo. B. To tell findings about fireflies.
C. To record a travelling experience. D. To show the author’s working conditions

One of the biggest disadvantages to a manned mission to Mars is the fuel problem. If future Mars explorers ever want to return to Earth, they’ll need not only enough fuel to get to Mars, but also enough fuel to get back home. It’s a difficult problem that can best be solved if there is some way of producing fuel on Mars itself.
Now, in a brilliant new plan outlined by a NASA(National Aeronautics and Space Administration) team leader Kurt Leucht, the dream of making fuel right on Mars itself appears to be a real possibility. And what is the only raw material needed to make rocket fuel? Martian(火星的)soil.
The NASA team’s method involves taking out water from Mar’s distinctive red dirt, and using a process to separate it into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen can then be combined with carbon dioxide, which is plentiful in Mars’ atmosphere, to make methane(甲烷), which can be used as rocket fuel.
Of course, all of this requires time and on-site factory that’s up to the task. For that, NASA is developing a team of robots that can be set up on Mars years in advance of a return trip to Earth, which will tirelessly work to make rocket fuel.
The whole plan does have one small problem: the water content of Martian soil. If we start digging and there’s no water, or far less than expected, that could be a trouble. But scientists are becoming more and more confident about the amount of water stored in it, which can even supply the survival needs of astronauts who plan to stay a while on the Red Planet.
“This technology will one day allow humans to live and work on Mars,” wrote Leucht, “and return to Earth to tell the story.”
28. According to the passage, what is NASA’s new plan about?
A. Making rocket fuel on Mars. B. Finding water in Martian soil.
C. Sending a team of robots to Mars. D. Settling up a factory on Mars.
29. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Analyzing the possibility of getting hydrogen.
B. Explaining the method of making fuel on Mars.
C. Showing how to combine hydrogen with carbon.
D. Introducing how to take out water from Martian soil.
30. What is the possible problem with the new plan?
A. It requires a lot of robots to make the plan come true.
B. The method of making fuel only works well in theory.
C. The amount of carbon dioxide in Mars’s atmosphere is limited.
D. It is uncertain whether there is enough water in Martian soil.
31. What is Leucht’s attitude toward the plan?
A. Cautious. B. Doubtful. C. Optimistic. D.Objective .

More than a billion people around the world have smartphones, almost all of which come with some kind of navigation(导航)app such as Apple Maps or Amap. This raises the age-old question we meet with any technology: What abilities is our brain losing to these apps? But also, importantly: What abilities are we gaining?
Talking with people who are good at finding their way around or good at using paper maps, I often hear a lot of annoyance(恼怒)with digital maps. North/south direction gets messed up, and you can see only a small section at a time. I can really understand that it may be quite disturbing for the already skilled to be limited to a small phone screen.
But consider what digital navigation aids have meant for someone like me. Although being a frequent traveler, I’m so terrible at finding my way that I still use Apple Maps almost every day in the small town where I have lived for many years.
In many developed nations, street names and house numbers can be meaningful, and instructions such as “go north for three blocks and-then west” make sense to those familiar with these rules. In Istanbul, however, where I grew up, none of those hold true. For one thing, the locals seldom use street names. Besides, the city is full of winding and ancient alleys that cross with newer avenues at many angles. In such places, you’d better turn to the locals. In the American countryside, however, there is often nobody outside to ask. In fact, along came Apple Maps, like a fairy grandmother whispering directions in my ear. Since then, I travel with a lot more confidence, and my world has opened up.
Which brings me back to my original questions: While we often lose some skills after depending on new technology, this new equipment may also allow us to gain new abilities. Maybe when technology closes a door, we should also look for the doors it opens.
32. Why do people who are skilled at reading paper maps feel upset?
A. They are confused by digital map’s direction.
B. They like reading paper maps.
C. They don’t know how to use navigation apps.
D. They are limited to a single smartphone app.
33. According to the text, which is the best way to find the destination in Istanbul?
A. Follow the navigation app.
B. Asking local people the way.
C. Getting familiar with the city rules.
D. Looking for street names and house numbers.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards the navigation apps?
A. Cautious. B. Confused. C. Critical. D. Favorable.
35. What could be the best title of the passage?
A. Benefits of Navigation Apps.
B. Disadvantages of Navigation Apps.
C. Have Navigation Apps Worsened Our Brain?
D. My World Opens Up by New Technology.

根据短文内容,从短文后选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
Get ready for a fun weekend outdoors by preparing for your camping trip strategically. Create a checkist to make sure you don’t forget anything super important, such as your camping tool and a first-aid kit.
36 If you want to completely absorb yourself in nature and be entirely relaxed, there are camping spots you can select to give you this experience. However, if you want to camp and have access to bathrooms, running water, and electrical outlets, you might search for a campground that advertises these facilities. Go online to find out campsite options in places such as your nearest national park. 37
Pick a campsite that has fun activities nearby. Think about which activities you want to do on your trip, such as hiking, fishing, kayaking, or swimming. You can choose a site that has at least one or two of your desired activities. 38
Reserve your camping spot beforehand. This is especially important if you’ve chosen a campground that’s more crowded. 39 You can also call the campground to speak to an employee about your visit.
Check the forecast to prepare for any rain or bad weather. 40 But it’s a good idea to look at the forecast for the weekend before you go. If you know there will be terrible weather, think about which camping location you choose-a campsite on low ground won’t keep you as dry as a campsite on higher ground with lots of trees to protect you from the rain.
A. Websites of campgrounds should list all of the facilities they have.
B. Choose the ideal campsite for your needs.
C. Decide which meals you’ll eat while camping.
D. Ideally you’ll be camping in sunny or cloudy weather.
E. Be aware that many campgrounds have a camping fee.
F. This will help you narrow down your campsite options.
G. So go online to reserve your spot for a selected date.

This afternoon all the teachers and students in our school had a discussion about whether Yuanmingyuan Park should be reconstructed and opinions are divided on the question.
60% of the students are against the idea of reconstructing Yuanmingyuan Park. They hold the belief that what it is like now can serve as the best material to educate people. Rebuilding it would not only cost a large amount of money, but also probably lead to people forgetting its history.
On the other hand, 40% think that Yuanmingyuan Park should be reconstructed because it will become more attractive after being rebuilt. Consequently, people can learn more about Chinese culture by visiting the new Yuanmingyuan Park. What’s more, they worry many relics will break down and even disappear for lack of protection.
