The meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services”. There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don’t expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa’s homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.
“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school, we watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”
“I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch. I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up. I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don’t think I was helping very much. It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”
24. According to the text, a volunteer refers to a person who __________.
A. has made a big fortune in life B. can afford to travel to different places
C. has a strong wish to be successful D. is willing to help those in need without pay
25. Tracy started her work as a volunteer ____________.
A. after she met Mother Teresa B. after she finished high school
C. when she was touring Calcutta D. when she was working in a hospital
26. Why did Tracy choose to be a volunteer?
A. She liked to work with Mother Teresa.
B. She was asked by Mother Teresa to do so.
C. She wanted to follow Mother Teresa’s example.
D. She had already had some experience.
27. What is Tracy’s “new idea”(Paragraph 2)of being a volunteer?
A. Going abroad to help the sick. B. Doing simple things to help the poor.
C. Working in Mother Teresa’s home. D. Improving oneself through helping others.

American cities are similar to other cities around the world: In every country, cities reflect the values of the culture. American cities are changing, just as American society is changing.
After World War Ⅱ, the population of most large American cities decreased; however, the population in many Sun Belt cities increased. Los Angeles and Houston are cities where population shifts(转移) to and from the city reflect the changing values of American society. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, city residents(居民) became richer. They had more children so they needed more space. They moved out of their apartments in the city to buy their own homes. They bought houses in the suburbs(郊区).
Now things are changing. The children of the people who left the cities in the 1950s are now adults. Many, unlike their parents, want to live in the cities. They continue to move to Sun Belt cities and older ones of the Northeast and Midwest. Many young professionals(专业人士,专门人才) are moving back into the city. They prefer the city to the suburbs because their jobs are there; or they just enjoy the excitement and possibilities that the city offers.
This population shift is bringing problems as well as benefits. A large number of poor people must leave their apartments in the city because the owners want to sell the buildings or make apartments for sale instead of for rent. In the 1950s, many poor people did not have enough money to move to the suburbs; now many of these same people do not have enough money to stay in the cities.
Only a few years ago, people thought that the older American cities were dying. Some city residents now see a bright, new future. Others see only problems and conflicts. One thing is sure: many dying cities are alive again.
28. What does the author think of cities all over the world?
A. They are alive. B. They are hopeless.
C. They are similar. D. They are different.
29.Why did American city residents want to live in the suburbs after World War Ⅱ?
A. Because older American cities were dying.
B. Because they were richer and needed more space.
C. Because cities had the worst parts of society.
D. Because they could hardly afford a life in the city.
30. According to the 4th paragraph, a great many poor people in American cities .
A. are faced with housing problems
B. are forced to move to the suburbs
C. want to sell their buildings
D. need more money for daily expenses
31. We can conclude from the text that .
A. American cities are changing for the worse
B. people have different views on American cities
C. many people are now moving from American cities
D. the population is decreasing in older American cities
D
Let us suppose it is now about A.D. 2060. Let’s make believe it is about sixty years from now. Of course, things have changed and life is very different.

In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment of young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. They haven’t yet started to take on their supply of energy directly as electrical current(电流) or as nuclear power. They may some day. But many foods now are in pill form, and the food that goes into the pill continues to come mainly from green plants.
Since there are several times as many people in the world today as there were a hundred years ago, most of our planet’s surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated(灌溉) with water and crops are no longer destroyed by pests. The harvest is always good.
Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farm. It is possible to run the farm by just pushing a few buttons now and then.
People are now largely vegetarians(素食者). You see, as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. Therefore, people have to be vegetarians and they are healthier both in their bodies and in their minds, and they know the causes and cure of disease and pain, and it is possible to get rid of diseases. No one has to be ill any more.
Such would be our life in 2060.

第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Does failure really exist?
If you believe you have failed, then you have. If you believe you don’t have the ability to succeed, then you don’t. 36 The moment you decide to give up or stop working toward your goals, failure is born.
37
Most people give themselves out without even realizing it. They are willing to work hard on reaching their goals, but only until the going gets too difficult or their energy dies down. Don’t do that! 38 Never quit, never admit failure, and never lose heart.
Don’t believe in a clear finish line for goals.
It’s a good idea to set a general timeline, but remember that something will be beyond your control. 39 If you lock yourself into a given timeline, you might make yourself feel like a failure! Instead, take it one day at a time and focus on making progress.
Be sure that you don’t see difficulties as failures.
Difficulties mean only one thing: it’s not time for your goal to be completed yet. That’s it! It doesn’t mean you failed; it doesn’t mean you’re weak; it doesn’t mean you’ll never achieve your goals. 40 You’ve got to keep moving forward and find a way over, around, or through the difficulties.
A. Never give up on yourself.
B. Failure only exists in your own mind!
C. That’s exactly how failure makes us feel.
D. It simply means you have not done enough yet.
E. You can never say exactly when your goal will be reached.
F. Instead, make up your mind to reach your goal!
G. Work hard and you will be likely to get good results.

The Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th of the eighth month of our Chinese lunar calender. As one of the traditional Chinese festivals, it has been enjoying great popularity in our country. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy we are, we will try to come home for the celebration.
The moon that night looks the brightest in the whole lunar month. What we love most is the time we enjoy the full moon together. With the beautiful moon up in the sky, we sit together and eat mooncakes and fruit, sharing our stories. In addition to these traditional activities, we have a wider range of choices such as traveling and visiting our relatives or friends.
听力原文
(Text 1)
M: How are we going to the city center tomorrow? In a taxi like last time?
W: Your dad would give us a ride but I prefer to go on the subway.
(Text 2)
W: Did you get some new shoes?
M: No. I found some I liked but I needed them in a size 42. They only had them in size 38 which were too small. My dad bought a new jacket for £40 in the sale.
(Text 3)
M: Hi, Lucy. Have you been shopping?
W: Yeah, getting things for my room in college. There's a bed, a desk, and a bookshelf. I'd prefer to have a light on my desk, so that's what I got today.
(Text 4)
M: Hello. I'm ringing to book an activity at your center. I'm hoping to book a sailing lesson.
W: I'm sorry that they're all full.
M: Then I'd like to join one of the group bike rides through the forest — I think I'd enjoy that more than the car racing I tried last time.
W: OK.
(Text 5)
W: Not a great day for our team.
M: Well, they didn't win, but considering how many boys couldn't play because of injuries, they didn't do so badly.
(Text 6)
M: Are you doing anything this week? There's a music festival and there's a group I'd really like to see. Do you fancy going too?
W: Yeah. I'd love to. When is it?
M: Well, it's available most of the week. I can do Thursday or Friday evening. What about you?
W: Oh, sorry. I'm working both nights. But I'm off on Saturday.
M: OK, they're performing twice every day, at 2:30 and 7:00.
W: The afternoon's best for me.
M: Yeah, and we could have lunch first at Star Café at 12:30.
W: Nice place. OK. I'll see you there.
(Text 7)
W: Hi Colin, my uncle's got a house in Alford and there is a room he wants to rent out.
M: What's it like?
W: It's got two floors with three bedrooms on the second floor. There's a bathroom upstairs and another downstairs.
M: What about the furniture?
W: The living room has got everything you need — DVD player, sofa, large screen TV and the kitchen has got a dishwasher and two fridges. The only problem is the wallpaper in the bedroom. It's ugly.
M: That doesn't matter. I can change that. When can we go and see it?
(Text 8)
W: Mr. White, who did all these beautiful paintings?
M: They're good, aren't they? The children did a project of their favorite animals.
W: Who drew the horse?
M: Oh, that was George. He visited an animal park with his family and he had a ride on one.
W: And who drew the sea lion? Was it the boy called John?
M: Well, he did draw something in the sea but he preferred dangerous animals.
W: So is that his shark?
M: Yes. And there's another dangerous animal here.
W: Do you mean the tiger?
M: No. Actually, I meant the bear. A girl called Emma drew that. It was Sarah who drew the tiger. Before she started, she saw a TV program about tigers so she decided to do it.
W: Look at all the different colors in this bird!
M: Yes. Richard who did that is a really clever artist.
(Text 9)
M: Hi there. I'm new here. Can you tell me how to get to the sports center?
W: We're on the main square now. So if you head south, you'll see the supermarket on your left. Don't turn left, though. Carry on straight until you get to the car park. If you go right there, you'll go to student block 1. You'll be at the sports center if you turn left.
M: Nice. Thanks a lot. Can you tell me where the library is?
W: Just go north and take the first right at the fork in the path. You'll see it there.
M: Great! I really need to wash some clothes. How much is it, by the way?
W: It's pretty cheap. A pound for a wash and a pound for fifteen minutes' drying.
M: Cheers. Oh, and the last thing, where's the student theater? I'm going to see the Student Dance Show tonight.
W: Cool! I'm involved in that show. I don't dance, but I do the costumes. Just head west from the square, and turn left. You can't miss it! There's a coffee shop next to it.
M: Excellent!

Thanks for coming to Hunter's Park School. Here are some important things for the next three months. Year 11 students have now been told where they are going to work in April. Five local companies and organizations have offered our students places for two weeks. Parents of Year 11 students should have received a letter giving details about your child's workplace. If you have any questions, please contact the head of year, Mrs. Bolney. The school drama club will perform a play in May, Rock and Roll Holiday. If your child would like to be one of the actors, please see Mr. Marchant after school. If they're interested in helping with sound and light, please get in touch with Ms. Williams. On June 5th, Year 8 students will be going on a visit to the City Art Gallery. Children must bring a packed lunch and water to drink. Paper and pencils for drawing will be provided. Please remember, children are requested not to bring money on this trip. Thanks for your attention.
